one of the best tips for Real Life that I’ve ever picked up is to always highball your estimate whenever someone asks you “when can you get this done by” by about 25% (if you can get away with it). that way, if it ends up being harder than you thought, you’ve got extra time to figure things out and if you were right about how much time it takes then you get to look like an absolute genius instead of just a simply competent person.

what you may not have realized is that I learned this crucial piece of life advice from an episode of Star Trek where Scotty is telling Geordi that whenever he told Kirk something on the Enterprise was at full capacity, it was always only ever a notch or so below full capacity so that Scotty looked like the god of all engineers when he was able to magically hack the warp drive to run a little beyond what he’d told everyone else was “full capacity” and honestly that one throwaway gag from Star Trek has changed my life.

I AM ALSO SO EXCITED. I've been keeping my mouth shut, or trying to, bc I've been afraid that I won't wanna write once the story's out there. But it hasn't stopped me on anything so far, so... I think I can talk about it. And I think I better, since at the pace I'm writing, I don't expect to get there for... A very very long time.

What’s Bailey’s favorite book? Movie? Song?

Bailey read a lot as a kid. Rainy or cold recesses were spent in the school library. She got her brother to take her to the library in Bison City as often as she could. 90% of the summer she spent with her granny in Central was at the library. But her favorite book? It's the worn, weathered, heavily-beaten-up, literally-taped-together copy of The Hobbit that lives on her bedside table. Ed used to read it to her at bedtime when she was little, even when she was old enough to read by herself. He'd do the voices and sing the songs. She knows every line by heart, and reading it keeps his voice alive in her head now that he's gone.

There's a few contenders for her favorite movie. She loves Princess Bride, and will pull that out for sleepovers and group movie nights. The Indiana Jones movies are also very near and dear to her heart -- the first three, anyway -- and she adores The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. I only saw Knightriders recently, but I think she'd love it, if she's in the mood for something a bit heavier. I haven't seen A Knight's Tale in too long, but from what I'd remember, I think she'd enjoy it. Cutthroat Island is another I need to rewatch, but I suspect she'd jokingly cite that one as her bi awakening.

And if you ask her what her favorite song is, it'll change from one moment to the next. You'll get an earful about what she's listening to, this new band Kyle turned her onto, what she likes about this group's newer stuff, what she prefers about their older stuff... She'll spend an hour talking and completely forget about the original question. But this is one I think she'd like:

If I had comic panels to make edits for her I'd use this song. I don't have the original context it was written in or for, but like. I hear this, and I hear someone who was in a position where they were powerless, vowing to get stronger and to never let that happen to themselves or anyone else, ever again. And that's... That's her. That's my girl.

What are your top five favorite DC stories? The ones that make you go feral/bonkers? Do want any of them to become movies if they aren't already?

So, my basic answer to "do I want it to be a movie" is no, because a lot of the time, the story suffers from being disconnected from the events of the concurrent comics and the much shorter timeframe of a movie. I do want my superhero movies to be based on or inspired by events from the comics, but... If I want the story in the comics, I'll read the comics, y'know? I dunno, I have mixed feelings on it. And trying to jump the gun and do, like, a Flashpoint story for the first Flash movie is just... That's dumb, don't do that. That's like doing Parallax for the first Hal-as-GL movie in a series. Don't do that.

At least, that's for the big multi-book arcs. The shorter stories? Ones that only took an issue or two? I could see that happening much more easily.

I also binge-read, which combines with my memory problems to make it hard to pick out individual stories. However, in no particular order, and definitely leaving other favorites out:

The issue where Wally had to transport that lady's heart across the country. That was cool and I loved it. It's been adapted to the small screen at least once, and that was good too, but it just hits different in the comic

The Impulse arc with Bart finding out about Preston's home life. That shit hurted.

Roy finding out about Lian existing -- y'all got to see me go insane about that in real time over on my comics blog, actually

Last Son/New Krypton/The Saga of Christopher Kent and His Brief Existence Before Detective Comics Forgot He Existed (i am still not okay, damnit, I want my boy back!)

Donna trying to sort through the million retcons and figure out who the hell she even is before her wedding and Dick helping her. Peak wondertwins right there. I love them so much.

This one's so hard to answer. Because I want to say "absolutely nothing whatsoever," but that's not the point of the question, is it?

I think... Hm. Drina had a pretty severely traumatic experience, losing her second family like she did. Zombie armies overrunning the city is, uh, gonna fuck a person up. Even if they're a mostly-grown young-adult. And especially when it's compounding the trauma of getting orphaned the first time and spending a few years trying to survive on the streets.

So, I think... Something that links back to that would freak her out a little. Seeing Molly lose it, go into a rage, and... Eat someone. Not just bite them, rip off a chunk and swallow it. That might be a bit of a trigger, if that happened.

As for the boys... I don't know. I don't see either of them doing anything like that. I think if Margo got involved in necromancy to solve his curse problem somehow, Drina would try to put a stop to it, but that's more fear for him, not fear of him.
