For those who weren't around for the entire saga of my love affair with Flat Luna:

In 1993, one of the earliest pieces of Sailor Moon manga merch was this Luna pencil case:

So flat. So fuzzy. Such a vacant stare. I was enamored when I found this ad amidst some old Nakayoshi Magazine scans. Someone who had seen this hallowed item in real life warned me that they're pretty janky in person but I did not care. I needed her.

What really struck me, though, was how different she looks from most Sailor Moon merch! Merch focused entirely on Luna alone? Not a purple Luna, but a black one?

But truly, is this not how the Luna of the manga is meant to be represented: as a formless black void, mutable in shape? Just look at how Naoko Takeuchi draws Luna, and tell me this is not an appropriate adaptation.

So anyway, Fortune and Queen Serenity smiled upon me and I found her on Yahoo!Japan in 2018. She did not really match the advertisement very well at all, but I did not care. She was beautiful.

Behold that crescent moon, cut from the highest quality yellow felt.

The official Sailor Moon fanclub, in their great wisdom, announced that they would be giving away a remake of her to members in 2020, thus proving that I have immaculate taste in old merchandise.

Behold. A moon upgrade.

But then there was a pandemic, and no mail left Japan for two years.

But now, at long last, Flat Luna and her larger, flatter little sister are together. United in flatness.

I got this Cinderella solely because as soon as I saw her I remembered how upset seeing her sisters tear that dress made me. And now she can wear it, not fond of how she's now considered purely yellow blond when she was a strawberry blond, but her face is so lovely it makes up for it, the dress form is lovely too
