so who’s Starfire based on?

I feel like I keep seeing questions of who Kory’s inspiration was on here, on Twitter, in real life, etc - at a con last year, someone made sure to let me know (I think it’s because I was dressed like her) that her original appearance was based on Naomi Campbell and someone else wanted to know if I knew anything about her original blueprint. 

In response to all of this, I wanted to do a mini break down on who inspired her different appearances. 

There’s two names that have been floating around: Naomi Campbell and Iris Chacon - only one of these people is a documented inspiration for one of Kory’s appearances and it’s: Naomi Campbell!

But it’s not her original appearance that she inspired (which I’ll go into later) but her appearance in Identity Crisis as drawn by artist/illustrator Rags Morales (who is...imo not the best artist but he tried):

Kory’s original appearance was based off an amalgamation of a few characters and real people, according to both Marv Wolfman and George Perez. The list goes something like this: Red Sonja, Perez’s first wife, maybe a stripper (which is what I assume is a joke but Wolfman and Perez really, really wanted Kory’s status as a sex symbol to STICK so I wouldn’t be surprised) - you can find this information both on the archived Titan’s Tower website and George Perez’s own website.

So, where did the Iris Chacon thing come from, you ask? Well - someone on reddit simply said they feel like she could have been an inspiration for Kory and that spread across Twitter and Tumblr like WILDFIRE. 

There is absolutely a resemblance - the key factor being her curly red hair - but I think it would be a little disingenuous to say that this was Kory’s blueprint, especially when her inspirations are pretty well documented across the decades (even if the way they talk about her inspirations are a little, well, creepy)

Fun fact: until Mark Waid named her Mar’i Grayson, her actual first name had been established in the Kingdom Come novelization as Nightstar.
