Hi, I’m Val and I started this blog years ago when I had no idea that I would be posting any kind of writing here. I also had no idea that tumblr’s secondary blogs are terrible, and that it would bother me this much. That being said I’m moving this blog to a new primary blog under the same username: @fandomcrysis I’ll be reposting my work in the next two weeks and by then I think I’ll be ready with the first part of my Gojo fic. The best dynamic for a group of characters: every single one of them is the weirdest person you will ever meet, but in wildly different ways.  Every time you think you’ve identified “the normal one” they casually reveal that they don’t think birds exist, or they fistfight grizzly bears on the weekends, or they collect human skulls, and you realize again that none of these people are remotely normal.

Also they’re found family.

Rojava Kurd

The Kurds are an ethnic group which exist across modern country lines, with large populations in Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq (even with their own autonomous province in the latter – Iraqi Kurdistan). There are a variety of dialects in the Kurdish language, mostly based on geographical region. Beel's clothes here are modelled off of Rojava Kurdish traditional costume, with this example worn in the late 1800s. Outfits like these were usually reserved for celebrations and formal events.

Roughly three months ago, Obey Me's team released this picture as a new merch set. This is almost a year after they released their "Lamp" event with similarly disappointing costumes. I am not the first (and I hope will not be the last) to identify this as a misguided attempt to "exoticize" these characters to sell a product, with the end result being an ill-thought-out lumping together of the many cultures of southwestern Asia and northern Africa (SWANA) under one "oriental" blanket. I'm not going to quote Said at you guys (though, if you're interested, check out a pdf here and a p good breakdown of the concepts here), nor am I going to condemn the entire OM team to shouts of "racist!” based on this alone (this is one of the least offensive things they've done, tbh). Instead, let's explore what those costumes could have looked like as an opportunity to educate and spread knowledge about the rich cultures traditionally inhabiting this region.

Levantine Bedouin

The Bedouins (Arabic: badawi) are a semi-nomadic group based in the deserts of modern-day Jordan, Israel, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia. They have traditionally sustained themselves largely on pastoral practices herding camels, goats, and sheep. Living in arid areas where rainfall is unpredictable, Bedouin tribes maintained tent housing which was easy to transport – moving the community between water resources in seasonal patterns. Current-day Bedouin groups adhere to this practice, while other communities have become urbanized and maintain their identity through traditional celebrations. Typical Bedouin outfits, like the one seen on Belphie, can consist of a long tunic (galabayah), pants (shalwar), and a headcloth (kuffiyeh), with dyed leather boots or sandals.

Highlands Yemeni The modern country of Yemen is considered to be a palimpsest of cultural practices, maintaining traditions from Yemenite Jews, Ottoman rule, and Islamic culture (under the Fatimid and Rasulid dynasties). Dishdasha, also called "thawb" or "qamis" are part of the traditional suit in many part of the Arabian peninsula. It is widely worn in Yemen, especially in Sanaa and the highlands, and paired with a jacket and shirt. The curved dagger carried at Levi's waist is called a "djanbia." The djanbia is considered to be THE symbol of Yemeni culture that perseveres across geographical divides, forming part of an ancestral practice that dates back to Islamic-period tradition.
