Liam and What it Means to be “Stupid”
One thing that particularly struck me about Liam’s interview in Attitude was his condemnation of the belief in Larry as “so stupid.”
It seems to me, that of the many, many things believing in Larry might be, “stupid” isn’t one of them. I don’t mean to imply that Larry is real (I’m sitting on the fence for the purposes of this post), but just that whether or not it is real, there is enough evidence to hint at the possibility of it, that no objective, rational person, even if they fundamentally disagree with it, can rightly deem it “stupid.”
“Stupid” implies a lack of any logical thought process, or rather a thought process is so erratic, fallacious or irrational that it is rendered incoherent, and therefore meaningless and of no value. Whether or not you believe in Larry, you can surely exercise enough intellectual flexibility to understand its rationale. The rationale behind seeing multiple sets of complementary tattoos on two people and assuming there may be significance there, or on hearing certain comments made by certain members of the band and understanding those comments to be allusions to a wider picture which is being obscured from view for the sake of commercial gain. You can also surely understand the rationale, whether you are inclined to agree or not, behind presupposing certain contextual factors, which colour/elucidate our interpretations of Larry “evidence”. For example, that it is likely that not everything is as it seems, given the nature of the entertainment industry, given the (proven) unreliability of the tabloid press, given the explicit discrepancies in various media narratives which have been created around the boys over the years… I could go on all day, but I shan’t because I’m sure you understand what I’m getting at.
Even if you ultimately reject these pieces of evidence as being proof of Larry, perhaps based on stronger conflicting evidence/your own personal gut instincts/whatever, to dismiss the arguments for Larry as “stupid” and to imply that those who have followed this rationale to it’s most plausible logical conclusion are simply “stupid,” is, quite frankly, stupid.
