i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return

#yes #I think the science is handled poorly #You expect me to believe a 30 y/0 woman who's apparently been on multiple scientific expeditions didn't prepare for the cold? #Can't make a fire? #Didn't make arrangements so she wouldn't starve? #I know the villagers took care of that for her but the thing is without them she would have died #Also for a scientist she's awfully unscientific and incautious #That tree thing was so bad #It's a shame bc I really like Emily as a character (in theory!) #A smart driven socially reticent academic is such a fun character #Also I hated Bambleby #The second Emily Mentioned that he plagiarized things and was academically dishonest he was dead to me #People say they get Howl vibes from him? Pls Bambleby isn't fit to shine Howl's shoes #Howl is a disaster and chaotic and charming yes and a bit pathetic but a key part of him is that He's actually a good person #Which Bambleby isn't #Also Emily's unscientific attitude and carelessness legitimately endangered people in thr book #Gosh #The parts of this book I enjoyed I enjoyed so much but the rest ... #Anyway! Give me Emily without Bambleby and well written scientific fieldwork and this story would be an absolute favorite! #Also there were some iffy vibes with the changeling child...that scene was...bad I didn't like it

Papercraft Reigen! I've had that gray paper for a while, and I really like it, but unfortunately hadn't found an opportunity to really showcase it. This piece seemed like the perfect chance to do so! Doesn't Reigen look stylish doing his beautifully-patterned spin!

Hi I just learnt that grebe the bird existed and I am intrigued do you have any knowledge to drop on the dudes

BOY DO I! grebes are my favorite waterfowl!

they're specialist divers and fish hunters, and they're a pretty wide group with a LOT of species!

and they're all freaks. every single one of them.

they're most closely related to FLAMINGOS, of all things, which is why their feet are so weird! they evolved completely separate from other waterfowl like ducks and geese, so they did the flipper thing totally backwards.

this is going to be a theme, nothing these birds do is normal.

unlike other specialist diving birds (coughcough LOONS coughcough), they aren't totally incompetent on land! just, again. total freaks about it.

aaagh I love them so much I might actually explode

also they swim like frogs, babies can dive pretty much immediately after hatching, and adults can minutely adjust their buoyancy in the water at will like a fucking submarine. you just can't make any of this shit up.
