Lee did his best to navigate a moral compass with the lifestyle that had been thrust upon him. Forced to consume the flesh of people, a hunger that would make him lose all control if ignored, he had only three options: Off himself, settle for a life of confinement where he'd eventually be driven to insanity, or eat people. While he had considered the first option numerous times, it was the last that he'd settled for : watching for those who seeked to bring harm to others, and choosing them as his prey where possible. Doing bad things didn't automatically make them an inherently bad person, but it was the only way he could lessen the guilt that would otherwise be all consuming.

The next person to have a target on their back was a man who had been acting unkindly towards the women working the desk at a tattoo shop ; the kind of place that Lee visited from time to time when he wanted more ink or was looking to get old ones touched up. This time, it wasn't tattoos that he was seeking out, but the flesh, organs and sinew that he would strip away from bone with his teeth. It wasn't long before Lee put his plan into action, leading the man into an isolated building near the shop. It was there that he killed him and devoured what he could of him, making quick work of discarding his shirt before too much blood was on it -- something for him to temporarily wear after, because this was bound to get messy. For a while he waited in the small space where the corpse lay motionless, waiting for the high to pass, and then he carefully began to leave the scene of the crime.

A voice brought Lee to an abrupt halt. He turned slowly, facing the heavily tattooed woman who he knew to work at the shop nearby : the same place that Zach had been scheduled to show up at today. Perhaps she had gone looking for him in his absence. ❝ It's not mine, ❞ he spoke carefully, unsure of what excuse he could possibly give that wouldn't make him look entirely guilty. At least she was offering to help, though he caught the way her voice wavered and wondered if she was scared of him. Not that he could blame her. ❝ It was some junkie bleedin' real bad and asking me for help. Probably owed a lot of money or pissed off the wrong person. ❞ Lee shrugged, bloody hands slipping into the pockets of his jeans. After a small pause, giving him time to think about her offer to clean himself up, he spoke again. ❝ You got the keys for the back door? ❞

ＨＥＲ ＣＬＩＥＮＴＳ ＷＥＲＥＮ＇Ｔ ＡＬＷＡＹＳ ＴＨＥ ＢＥＳＴ ＰＥＯＰＬＥ， ＢＵＴ ＳＨＥ ＴＲＩＥＤ ＮＯＴ ＴＯ ＪＵＤＧＥ． zach had been one of her regulars for a while now, but she hadn't noticed the shitty way he treated the girls at the front desk. it was half the reason why she wasn't overly nice to him whenever he booked her, but despite her cold shoulder, it seemed her art couldn't be beat when it came down to it. she'd grown used to the appointments with him, and had been fully prepared to spend the last four hours of her shift working on some awesome ram skull, gothic style back piece while listening to one of her true crime podcasts. zachary ruined those plans, however, by being a no show — leaving oliver to the mercy of her boss, who figured since everyone else was tattooing, that she should clean the shop. like some kind of fuckin' apprentice.

luckily she could still listen to her podcast while she cleaned, so the hours went by pretty quick, and before she knew it she was on her way back to her car. since front parking was usually pretty crowded, she tended to park behind the building. as she started to unlock her doors she heard the sound of footsteps behind her, and she spared a quick glance over her shoulder, only doing a double take when she noticed zach's jacked up ford parked near the end of the lot, where the area split down into the alleyway between the shop and the lawyers office next door. right next to where those footsteps were echoing from. but that was a dead end . . . why would zach show so late, and then be in the alley — unless he was buying drugs again. fuck.

she turned around, ready to straight up ask her good for nothing no show why he thought it was okay to stand her up if he was just gonna be back behind the shop, buying drugs in the most obvious spot ever ? but instead of being greeted with the familiar features she expected, she witnessed some homeless looking e-boy coming out with what looked like blood all over him. what the fuck . ❝ shit dude, are you okay ? ❞ she asked, quickly starting to walk towards him. ❝ if it's super illegal i can clean you up in the shop, but that shit looks bad man. ❞ her voice wavered a little once she got closer to him, noticing the signature plaid shirt zach usually wore to his appointments. the black ink was still stained in the sleeve from when he had knocked her tray over while trying to get comfortable in the chair.

Admittedly, the climb to the top looked easier than it really was. From far away it appeared shorter and a little less steep, but Lee's mind had been changed immediately after coming to stand at the bottom. The view from far away had been deceiving. Up close, it became clear that it was going to take a bit of patience and effort to climb their way to the top. Alas, Lee could at least take comfort in knowing that it wasn't all that dangerous. It was just tiring.

❝ Hey, how do you feel about stayin' up there? ❞ Lee arched his eyebrows and nodded towards the top, which they weren't far from now. It would just be for the night, and they had everything they'd need in the backpack anyway and could hike back down come the morning. ❝ It might not be a good idea to come back down when it's dark out and we can't see anything. One misstep and you're gonna be hurtin' real bad at the bottom. ❞

Lee turned to face Maren once she announced that she was ready, his hand grabbing hold of her own in determination and their fingers interlocking to begin leading her up the incline. ❝ Not far now. Don't die on me, ❞ he teased, throwing a playful glance over his shoulder at her.

Athletics had never been her forte. She despised gym class and was happy every time she had to pick up and move before the mile run. Even so, she’d done nothing but move, move, move for what felt like years and she never thought to do it for enjoyment. But anything with Lee was enjoyable. It wouldn’t be too long before he left her behind and moved on to a prettier girl, one with less baggage, so Maren didn’t mind taking advantage of the opportunity.

“Yeah, I think I need a breather.” She had managed to keep her breathing relatively steady, but it didn’t stop the sweat from collecting on her brow and her thighs to wobble like jelly. Her tongue felt prickly and her mouth was dry, but she didn’t want to see needy. It’ll be worth it, she told herself. She just had to make it to the top. She just had to prove to Lee she was capable of trying.

Maren leaned against the tree and closed her eyes. The heat from the sun was dulling as it made it’s way across the sky. Her eyes traced over the canopy of branches above her, squinting as rays of light poked through the gaps in the trees. How easy it would be for him to kill her up here. Or for her to kill him. She pushed the thought away as quickly as it had come, and straightened herself. “Okay, I’m ready for the final leg.”

If Lee had to use three words to describe Travis, these were the ones that would come immediately to his mind : Intense, impulsive, and downright fucking annoying. He had to hand it to him though, he was funny and he kept him on his toes, and he said some really out of pocket things that could make Lee laugh days later just from remembering it.

❝ Tryin' to dig yourself outta the hole now? You might need a bigger shovel. ❞ Travis could try to spin it on him if he wanted, but that didn't erase what had just taken place : jealousy. Obvious, undeniable jealousy from the chimera.

❝ Hold on, I wanna rephrase what I said before. ❞ A drag was taken from his cigarette before Lee continued, smoke dissipating into the air. His eyes shifted back to Travis, corners of his lips pulling upward in a playful smile. ❝ I like you enough to not wanna hurt your feelings on purpose.          [ that was gay as fuck. ] they'd slept together before, multiple times ── multiple locations. he'd heard some pretty gay shit come out of lee's mouth; however, this still took the cake.

         as much as he wanted to maintain the stoic expression, the slightest smile tugged at the corners of his lips. ❝ oh my god . . . lee . . . do you like me or something? ❞ he was pleased with the chance to turn the conversation around. besides, the chimera felt the same way; the last thing he wanted to do was hurt him.

The climb to the top was a tiring one, especially as the incline grew steeper and forced them to exert more of their energy, but the view that awaited them was one that Lee knew would be worth it. Way up at the top with just the two of them, they'd be able to overlook everything.

With his bag slung over his shoulder, allowing Maren to do the easy part of only bringing herself, he turned to see her bracing herself against a tree while she worked to catch her breath. It was her comment about being dragged into the situation that elicited laughter from him, the sound short lived because he was feeling tired too.

❝ We're almost there. At least comin' back down isn't gonna be as hard . . . as long as you don't trip and fall. ❞ The lighthearted tone was an immediate giveaway that he was only joking, Lee having full faith that they were going to be fine. They really would have to mind their footing and not get too ahead of themselves though, lest they wanted to risk tumbling down without any hope of stopping. ❝ You wanna sit for a minute? ❞

Lee's eyes bore into Travis, studying his face carefully to watch for his reaction. Rather than biting back and getting angrier, he seemed to be at a loss for words. It was funny, considering he sounded so sure of himself only a few seconds ago and was so easily throwing out accusations and threats towards a man he'd never even met. ❝ You don't know? ❞

That answer wasn't good enough. Not by a longshot, and he didn't particularly feel like cutting him some slack after he'd just acted like a total asshole.

❝ You wanna admit that's bullshit, or do I gotta pry that outta you too? ❞ Lee quirked an eyebrow, daring Travis to argue it, and reached into his pocket to fish out a cigarette. After bringing it to his lips and lighting it, he continued speaking. ❝ And anyway, you're the idiot for thinking I'd do somethin' to hurt you on purpose. ❞

Typically, Lee kept his encounters to himself. Whether it was to devour someone or simply hook up with them, it wasn't something he felt the need to share with people. This time, it had come up casually discussion and he figured it would be brushed over, but Travis' reaction to it was the opposite of what he expected. If the condescending question didn't give it away that he was pissed off, then his trembling hands definitely did.

❝ Hey, you can't talk to me like that, ❞ Lee snapped back defiantly, his body turning to face the other male. Bigger and stronger or not, he didn't intend on just bending to Travis' will and letting the toxic behaviour slide. Besides, wasn't he always the one calling him things like bro and homie? His brows furrowed to mirror Travis' expression, anger displayed plainly across his face. ❝ Why the hell do you care anyway, huh? What's it to you what I do with other people? ❞

While it was true that there were some very strange and unexplainable things happening, Lee wasn't sure just how much he bought into the Lottie nonsense with everyone claiming that she was keeping them safe, as if she had a connection to some sort of larger power at play here. Maybe it was desperation, an attempt at holding onto whatever sliver of hope they could get their hands on by turning to faith, but he'd be lying if he said he couldn't see it turning ugly.

❝ Everyone is losin' their minds out here and I don't wanna feed into this weird cult shit either, but you know and I know that they're gonna believe what they wanna believe if it makes 'em feel safer. ❞ Lee had both talked to the others about it and overheard some of the conversations, and they seemed pretty set in turning to Lottie as some sort of guardian.

While walking beside Natalie, Lee having volunteered to go hunting with her while Travis was off doing whatever it was he'd busied himself with, he kept his eyes on the environment to watch for movement within the trees. The last thing he wanted was to miss out on something because he was too distracted. ❝ Doesn't matter what we say anyway. Nobody listens to anything 'cept what Lottie says. ❞
