The way twitter and tiktok talk about dopamine responses you would think everyone was posting from a convent

You can make anything you hate in a "pathology" by writing about how it triggers a dopamine response: food, sex, social media, pop music, whatever.

And because you use big words, people will take it seriously when you speak, even if what you are saying is "doing something enjoyable is bad because it weakens your moral fiber." Because you didn't say those words, you said "this behavior rewirses your brain by triggering a dopamine response."

When quite literally any form of pleasure triggers a dopamine response! When I beat someone online at chess, it makes me happy. Does that mean chess is "the same as any addictive drug."

I joke, but the funny thing is, people did used to say this about pleasures we now see as enriching or classy. Reading novels was supposed to rot your brain, and Beethoven was too stimulating and could ruin your morals.

Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.

The 300 or so arrests took place on Tuesday night at Grand Army Plaza, on the doorstep of Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, where thousands of mostly Jewish New Yorkers gathered for the seder, a ritual that marked the second night of the holiday celebrated as a festival of freedom by Jews worldwide.

The seder came just before the US Senate resoundingly passed a military package that includes $26bn for Israel.

I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.

One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.

Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.

Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.

So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.

It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.

That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.

News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.

Me too!! They just get the job done with no frills, it’s wonderful. I “upgraded” to a colour printer-scanner several years ago and it kept having issues so I went back to the cheapest Brother B&W laser and a flat bed USB scanner. I’ve been using knock-off toner in my laser printer for many years with no issues so it’s very cheap for me to print basic black and white.

PSA: Don't use Open Office

I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.

Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.

Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

Eudicots (“true dicots”): This is a ginormous class, containing almost all leafy trees, quite a lot of plants that humans get food from (including potatoes and all of the legumes), and the plants we get tea, coffee, and chocolate from. It also contains carnivorous plants, parasitic plants, and some very poisonous plants, as well as tobacco and cannabis.

Monocots: The second largest taxon in Magnoliophyta, with 70,000 species. Narrow leaves with parallel veins are a good sign you’re looking at a monocot, as are plants that grow from bulbs, like onions, garlic, and tulips. Do you need to touch grass? Monocot. Do you want to bake a cake? Wheat, sugar cane, and the orchids that produce vanilla extract are all monocots.

I'll never get over how depressing it is how most young girls are told their first time is supposed to hurt, how most teenage girls have a painful 'first time' and are just, expected to tolerate it and told it's completely normal and healthy and good. How callous the teenage boys they sleep with and give them bad painful sex are about causing these teenage girls pain and discomfort and even making her bleed from a chaffed or torn vagina. How many girls and young women push themselves into bad painful sex and tolerate it just because they're told that's normal and they need to. How fucking callous cis boys and men are to this, how cis boys and men just go "haha yeah sex is like pizza, even when it's bad it's pretty good!" because they didn't grow up being told they needed to tolerate pain and bleeding from sex, they didn't have to choke back tears of pain during their first time or first several times or during any unpleasant sexual encounter. I'll never stop being furious over how one sided sex is supposed to be in a patriarchal society.

I'll never get over how normalized coercion is. I'll never stop being furious how much I heard boys joking "50 no's and 1 yes is still a yes!" during my formative years, and hearing my friends talk about how they only had sex (that they hated and was painful) because their boyfriend wouldn't stop nagging them. I'll never stop being furious about all the coercion and pain teenage girls are expected to endure in their sex lives.
