If a DNA company tells you you’re 30% Phoenician or whatever, that doesn’t mean that 30% of your ancestors were Phoenician or that you have 30% “Phoenician genes.” Instead, it means that 30% of the genetic markers they identified within your larger genome have been identified as tending to be generally more common among the very small number of poorly-preserved skeletons that archaeologists have found in contexts that make them think those skeletons most likely belonged to Phoenician people and that have had their genomes sequenced.
