Do you ever think about how Bender was so depressed and lonely that he was going to kill himself, and then he immediately changed his mind when Fry called him his friend? Because I think about this all the time, especially that they had this exchange the first time they met. Fry saved Bender’s life and he doesn’t know it because he’s a good person.

Fry was the first person to treat Bender like a regular human being with feelings, which is something that gets dismissed by quite a few characters throughout the show. No wonder Fry is the only human that’s on Bender’s “don’t kill” list (at first, I’m certain it gets longer later). Bender may be a complete asshole, but deep down, he just wants to be loved. And Fry was the one to give him that.

Hot take:

I hate it when people call Frender one-sided. And ‘poor Bender, Fry is never going to love him back.’ Because that’s bs. Fry really loves Bender with all his heart and he’s often the selfless one in their relationship.

Yes, Bender really cares about Fry and that is one of his redeeming qualities. But honestly? Bender would really need to work on himself if they wanted to be in a serious relationship together.

He’s a serial cheater. He abandons Fry a few times in dangerous situations if I’m remembering correctly. He steals Fry’s kidney AND his blood (on more than one occasion). There are multiple occasions where he hurts Fry and Fry forgives him almost immediately. I mean c’mon, I don’t think Fry would be the issue here.

To me, the appeal of Frender is that Bender is an awful and selfish person. But Fry is the one thing he truly cares about and genuinely loves. And Fry’s love for Bender is so pure. And it forces Bender to change himself for the better because he loves Fry. These types of love stories are always my favorite which is why I adore these two so much, other than their chemistry of course.

One issue I have with the Comedy Central revival:

In the Fox run, Fry, Leela, and Bender really do feel like a married threesome fr. So many good Freeler episodes and so many adorable Freeler moments (shout out to “The Route of All Evil” my beloved).

In the Comedy Central run, we get a lot of cute Frender moments, Freela moments, but barely any Freeler moments. What gives?! It’s like they got divorced and Leela and Bender split custody over Fry (because this boy chooses both of them bless his heart). There are so many episodes where Leela and Bender act like they can’t stand each other when that wasn’t the case in the original run!

So c’mon Hulu run, you have another chance. Please god, give us the best Freeler moments in the entire series. Make them feel like a whacky lil delivery poly-trio again, I’m begging you. Here’s to hoping 🤞🤞

#I do think bender and leela have the capacity to be cute af but in small doses #not majority of the time they spend together

Looking back, it's insane to me that the writers expected us to believe that Bender is straight when he has these weird obsessions with other male robots (Calculon and Elzar), even marries Calculon at one point and has an intense attachment to Fry--and yes, men can have close platonic relationships, but Bender having a crush on Fry would be 100% believable and in character.

Also, Bender just gives off that vibe.

The fact that 'Fry as a pulp fiction damsel in distress' is a whole sub-genre of official Futurama artwork is the best thing. Especially when there's official art of both Leela and Bender carrying him. Freeler rights af.
