Amuro has never thought of his hands as simply what they are. They've always been tools of war, his only line of defense, blood stained appendages he can't stand to look at. He's been fighting longer than he's been at peace—whether he's involved in warfare or simply existing at "home".

It's hard to be gentle. It's hard to even fathom that he deserves to give or receive "gentleness".

The thought to press their hands together seems impulsive, but he's been thinking about it for far longer than anyone else may have. Like a school aged boy deliberating on whether or not he should hold hands with the girl he likes—but instead, Amuro is deliberating on if holding Melissa's hand would somehow stain her.

But he does it anyway, because when will they get this chance again? When will they be able to sit alone together without his watchful eye?

Melissa's hand is much smaller than his own. She has her own fair share of callouses from her years of work, but they're clearly much better taken care of than his. They're still soft.

They're still clean.

Staring down at their touching hands, Amuro considers pulling his own away and pretending like this never happened. This simple of an action shouldn't be so terrifying... and yet, he feels like a shy child again.

When she speaks, he looks up from their hands to look at her.

"...Yours are still really soft." It comes out as a whisper, like he's afraid someone is listening. You can never be too careful, here. There's always a chance.

He seems afraid to look down again—but when he feels her hand moving, his gaze slowly flickers down to watch her as she moves.

The gesture is obvious. She wants him to intertwine her fingers, a proper hand-hold instead of pressed together palms. It's a simple action. All he'd have to do is move his back where it had been moments ago, with a couple more steps.

And yet, his hand shakes while he completes what feels like such a daunting task.

He knows he doesn't have to, if he doesn't want to. Melissa is one of the few people who ever picked up on the fact that he doesn't like to be touched, and she never made him feel bad for it. There was never any pressure to make physical contact when he was around her—and maybe they was one of the reasons why it was so easy.

Was. It feels so terrifying now—likely caused, in part, by the new scars. Fresh bruises. Wounds there that still haven't properly healed, because of how fresh they are.

To him, he's never been able to view these as more than weapons—but to her, they're just hands.

To them, holding hands is a privilege. Few are the moments in which they truly can rejoice in each other's company, conformity has made it so they accept this as their reality, even if it shouldn't be. Even if living life like this is wrong.

Melissa's hand gets lost on Amuro's, and, as it does - her mind wanders. How many times have they done this? Not enough for the pair to be seen as lovers by anyone other than themselves.

Maybe that's the point.

"Amuro," it's muttered, they haven't really moved much. Whenever they're together, with nowhere to go, they're not any different than miniature dolls. Models. Being moved and placed wherever someone else needs them to be, as per convenience of others. Never themselves. "Your hand..."

It's bruised, and rough to the touch. But the tenderness is still palpable, despite all of his hardships. Despite the war and then some. It holds hers with care she would've never thought possible, its touch isn't warped, it's honest - borderline boyish, with innocence one might have thought lost.

It reminds her of a lost child, seeking guidance. One she can't provide. They're not so different, lost lambs in a wolf's den.

The gesture is silent, there's so many things you can convey without words - her hand lets go of his, instead, she spreads each and every delicate finger, gesturing for him to place his hand on top of hers once more.

She sounds so tired when she speaks, and the pang of guilt in his chest that results is overbearing. It feels like all of this is his own fault, despite knowing just how selfish that train of thought is.

No matter what happens in relation to him, the thought lingers. If only I had been there. If only I could have stopped him.

And yet, words so many people have said ring to remind him: You didn't start it. You can't stop it. You weren't the first, you won't be the last.

The only thing that shakes him out of this state of mind is Melissa, her lips gently pressing into his own. Its her company that reminds him that he's alive. That they both are. It feels easy to forget sometimes, between these walls, that they're human.

"Okay," he whispers against her skin, returning her soft kisses between pauses, "I won't."

This won't last forever. We're lucky if it lasts until the morning.

Even though he knows the truth, he accepts her plea to hide it. He pulls her closer like he's desperate to forget it himself, hand neatly placed on her hip as his kisses match the desperation of her own.
