      she's never had any formal education -- even what was provided in the alliance was meant to be supplemental. of course, their courses on xenolinguistics was dry, at best. and that was being generous. still, there's only so much one can glean from books, where there is no proper reference for pronunciation, for accent. maybe shepard will never be adept as a true linguist, but his lack of critical comment is observed as approval. the faint tension in her shoulders ebbs away, pleased. it may be silly, taking language lessons when there are so many other things to do -- but it keeps her from flying off the deep end. a welcomed distraction, and one that might help her understand. if not her enemy, then the universe.  

❝      that's kind of a romantic proverb for vulcans, isnt it?   ❞ shepard isn't needling, or attempting to demean; it's a genuine remark, rooted in curiosity. she knows how proud vulcans are of their culture, of the quick - silver thoughts of their minds and steel resolutions. she's not one to judge that, honestly. it's not something she could follow herself, but that hardly makes it wrong. ❝     still, i can't really fault it for sounding that way. humans romanticize everything, don't we? what's more logical, than recognizing the vast enormity of the universe and all the ways in which existence . . . well, exists.   ❞ sitting a little straighter, fatigue is masked in favor of something else; and for now, the caffeine ( and stubbornness ) is enough to keep her alert. gaze flickers across the vulcan, before offering a faint, but grateful smile. and something akin to a challenge resonating within two - toned eyes. ❝     what's next?   ❞

spock tilted his head downwards as she REPEATED his words back to him . there could be better use of her vowel sounds , but , he was otherwise happy with the pronunciation . obsidian eyes pulling up to watch her features , spock then tilted his head , NATURALLY the mind was curious as to what she had spoken , so he deftly supplied said information to her .

                   shepard undeniably, irrevocably, adores liara. for a long time, the asari was the only one who really knew, and believed what shepard saw; because she could see it, too. smarter than iris could ever hope to be, badass, and with more determination that most gave her credit for --- it's no wonder they became quick friends. but her perceptiveness, which had been praised before, is now coming to bite her in the ass. all iris can do is give a wry grin, nimble fingers curling around her glass of brandy. she's not drunk, not even remotely; but where nearly all others would politely allow shepard this moment of bad indulgences and accept her side - stepping their questions, liara doesn't. ❝   what gave you that idea?   ❞    

 sitting back in her chair, the rest of her drink is thrown back, and the burn down her throat makes her hum. good -- she still feels. ❝     'm fine liara, promise. sometimes i just wonder . . . am i actually me? and i must be. there's nothing that really says otherwise. it's just me gettin' too lost in my head.     ❞

headcanon:  shepard grew up on the streets, and really has no formal education prior to joining up with the alliance -- and she had to teach herself how to read and write, in order to keep up with the curriculum beyond the physical. everything she knows, she knows because of first hand experience, picking the brains of the people who know, throwing herself into her coursework and her own pursuit in knowledge. even though she doesn't get much time, it is not uncommon to find shepard pouring over books; everything from philosophy to math, history and everything in between.

headcanon:  although she did not start her career with it, shepard did eventually have a superficial gene modifier / augment installed a short time after joining the alliance, so that she has the ability to change her hair color and length at will. although she is most famously known for her long blue hair, it is not uncommon to see it black, or in other colors / styles. but it will almost always default back after long to either blue or black.
