The Good Tyme Writers Buffet was born from an effort to showcase the city’s literary talent during the 2011 Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival. To this day it’s a curated event, built and hosted by Steve Hughes, which includes writers from varying genres, ages, and levels of experience, from the unpublished to those with several books under their belt. “It’s my version of the perfect way to hear writers read,” says Hughes. “We potluck. We drink beers. A DJ spins, then, six writers read for 10-ish minutes each. It’s not exactly rapid fire, but there’s a whole lot coming at you in a short time frame. It’s relaxed. It’s cool. It’s a helluva lot of fun.” In 2013, the Knight Foundation awarded the Writers Buffet a grant to expand the series. Since then, it has become a regular part of Public Pool’s programming. Each Buffet includes a potluck, a DJ, and plenty of beverages. Hughes invites five writers to read on a theme connected to our current show. It’s our attempt to look a little deeper at the ideas that our exhibiting artists are exploring in their work. The Good Tyme Writers Buffet remains a great opportunity to eat and drink and rub elbows with new and established writers. We schedule them once every two months, excluding July and August.
