“I dunno, I think everyone has that something they wish they could’ve done better, you know?” it’s not that Neville makes it a habit of conversing with criminals, especially not inmates in Azkaban, and part of him is always going to see Bellatrix Lestrange standing in the cells, laughing at him. Even though Neville full well knows she’s no longer an issue, it’s not something he can unthink. He wishes an Azkaban rotation wasn’t required to be an Auror, even for those who had helped fight the war. 

But at least he’ll be able to tell Rebecca how the man is doing, that’s a silver lining, isn’t it?

A slightly bitter, lopsided smile tugs at the corner of Gideon’s lips. There’s things you wish you could have done better, and then there’s being a monster, he almost says, but he keeps it to himself.

“That’s true,” he says instead, with a sigh and a shiver as a draught catches him. “But for a lot of people those things are things they’ll have the chance to do again.”

“I think we all do.” Gideon Wilkes was not the confident, proud shining star he had once been. Azkaban, even without the Dementors, had taken its toll on his nerves, and coming back to face public opinion for his crimes had shattered what little confidence remained. “But you don’t have so much to regret, do you?”

Neville was one of the heroes of the war, after all, and his help had got Rebecca through the worst of her time directly afterwards.
