October is pitbull awareness month! take some time this month to tell the people around you about what wonderful and loving pets bully breed dogs make and that they should go to their local shelter right now and adopt all the lovely pitties.  or you could buy a shirt with two pitbulls named ‘meat’ and ‘potatoes’ to show the world how much you love these wonderful dogs <3

even though i’ve known this would be coming for months, it didn’t hit me until literally 12 hours before free agency started that holtby would be leaving the caps. four emotional paragraphs about losing my favorite hockey player to free agency below the read-more. we’ll miss you in dc, holts. best of luck in vancouver.


from his first game with the caps in 2010, just a few months after i moved to the dmv from fla, holtby was my favorite. 2010 was still during my phase of automatically liking goalies the most, but holts has never been just any goalie. as a rookie he was nerve-wracking to watch, always venturing out of the crease, and moving around generally way more than i was comfortable with as a 12 year old with a diagnosed anxiety disorder. as he got older and more experienced, he got a lot more consistent and less anxiety-provoking to watch, but any caps fan can tell you that he never really gave up his habit of going on adventures. even through his outstanding stanley cup run in 2018, holts has kept us on our toes as he tries to play both goalie and defense for a team whose actual defense frequently leaves him out to dry. i may be biased, but no goalie has earned and deserved their reputation and decoration (see: vezina, stanley cup, etc) the way holtby has. it’s been an honor and a joy to watch him play for the caps these past ten years. while my love for holts may have started as an appreciation for his goaltending, my love for him as a person has grown to encompass so much more than that. i have often and increasingly felt distanced from this league and this sport as an LGBT fan. from day one in DC, braden and his wife have committed themselves to advocating for the queer community here. from supporting the HRC to attending DC pride every june, holtby has showed up for queer caps fans time and time again. more recently, he and his family have shown outspoken support for the BLM movement as well. Holtby is clearly a leader on and off the ice, and someone i have been proud to look up to in a league full of embarrassing men. holtby, you will be missed by the people of DC. we will miss your outstanding goaltending, your leadership, your compassion, your very small pony, and your hats. we will never forget the way you have supported our team for a decade. we will always remember holding our breath when you made that stick save on alex tuch, the incredibly relatable face ovi made as you made that save, and what it felt like to watch you lift the cup for the team that you have dedicated so much of your career to and the city that you have dedicated so much of your life to. you will always be my favorite player. i look forward to seeing where your career takes you, and i wish you the best in vancouver.
