This is Jakaal, the ghostly spirit of a Tundra sorcerer who became cursed by a strange artifact that was discovered hidden beneath the ice and snow. Jakaal never truly died, but his body, a fragile vessel, fell away until his very soul was bared to the material plane. His thirst for knowledge and power still drives him, however, without a body or a voice of his own his progress has been slowed. 

He found a young, impressionable sorcerer just as he had been so many long years ago, that was willing to speak with him and for him when necessary. With time, they have learned to communicate with one another. Jakaal exchanges lessons for favors from his apprentice Knox. They have developed an unusual, mutually beneficial bond much like that of a Warlock and their patron.
