“I think...it’s important to stay true to oneself about how one feels. I’d much rather feel sad than ignore that sadness. Same for any other emotion.”

✿ ~“The wind is picking up…do you think we’ll be okay, Mister?” 

   A shivering and worried Hau had Olena, his Flareon, tight in his arms; Antonio’s mudkip, happy to make Hau’s hair his new resting spot, snored peacefully. 

   The wind, as if responding to the boy, howled louder and Hau felt goosebump rise as an answer. A single fishing boat out in the expansive blue ocean was the only thing in sight and Hau didn’t realize how cold it could it get, especially when night fell. 

     “Ack! Heyyy-oh, mahalo!” 

   Antonio had tossed a thick blanket at the unsuspecting boy, along with a mutter of reassurance and a playful wink. Hau left out a breath of relief. Seeing Antonio so calm and confident out in the roaring sea made him feel like everything would be okay. But he also didn’t want captain Antonio to work alone.

   Hau tied the blanket like a cape- Olena secure on his back and Mudkip stayed as his crown. 

     “A real sailor doesn’t shy away from the cruel wind and sea! Wait up, Mister! I’ll help man the boat’s horn!”

Hau or Kukui, Orange or White please?

✿ ~ white and orange combined ~

   Hau jumped when Professor Kukui, who seemed to pop out of nowhere, asked him why he was in front of Burnet’s house. Oh no, Kukui came earlier than expected- his back started to sweat as the man neared the door! It’s a good thing he was tasked to distract the man no matter what: operation-ban-the-Professor-from-Burnet’s-house-until-the-surprise-party-is-all-set!

   With all the finesse of a trained A-list actor, Hau pretended to trip and blocked Kukui’s way. He smiled sweetly, eyes pure and clear as he wove his tale. The picture of unreadable innocence.

     “I’m her helper for her latest experiment!” 

A half-truth.

     “And you came just in time!” 

Too early!

     “Ah! Let me show you, right here, right now because it’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen! I’m sure even you won’t expect this!” As he rambled, the door behind him gave a rat-ta-ta. The signal.

     “Actually... I need to get my malasadas first, come with Professor!” He took a hold of Professor Kukui’s arm and opened the door...

   At her somewhat concerned tone, Thorton shot an exasperated glare before curling up in pain. Why did he let Zinnia talk him into eating that spicy ramen. He knew his tender stomach couldn’t take it. Now Thorton was certain being around Zinnia was detrimental to his health, overall safety, and pristine IQ.

   He only hoped his face wasn’t as green as his attire. 

►  “Miss. If you would…exit the premise- yes I damn well know its night, but I will not be able to live with myself. To soil my image in front of an audience if such an unsightly…event were to ha…happen.”

Antonio continued to charge towards Hau, determination glowing in his eyes. He could just taste that promotion, the words coming out of his admin’s mouth as he’d advance from his lowly grunt status.

Adrenaline coursing through his veins, Antonio swung his arms forward, hoping to grab hold of the child - woosh! - but alas, he caught nothing! Dazed, he looked around and spotted the little bastard getting away, running straight for the portal.

✿ ~ Why do people always say that?, Hau thought. It’s not like I’m gonna pop up ‘hello!’ and show myself.

His heart thumped loudly in his chest and he placed a steady hand over it as if trying to mute the sound. Hau dared a small peek and flinched at the sight of the policeman in front of the doorway. He slowly withdrew back. The loud hum of the vending machine filling his ears.

But-

There was another sound. A feeling as well- panic. That was Kai’s emotion!

Hau peeked out once more. His back grew cold. Above the doorway, above the exit sign was Kai, floating innocently however, the seawater from his wet fur dripped down, down and-

Plop!....Plop!

A small puddle had formed.

Cordelias expression read one of surprise as her Alolan friend entered, the bell above him still ringing faintly. She had little time to respond, as her arms were suddenly full with the pudgy Alolan Raichu. Offering him a grin, she continued to give Kai more affectionate pats.

“Whatever is your most popular drink I’ll take two and a side of ‘a daily life of Cordelia’, please!”

Letting out a light laugh, she poured him a lemonade, mostly because the hot cocoa took too long to make. Sliding him the glass, she handed Hau a menu. 

“Order anything you’d like! It’s on the house!” She beamed, finally speaking. “Nothing has really changed on my end, I’m still here after all. Lately business has been a little on the slow side. I still get the fishermen, but thats about all.” Wrinkling her nose, she produced a PokePuff from a jar underneath the cooler. She placed it on Kais tummy, then turned to Hau. “But thats just boring business stuff! I found a heart scale the other day while walking on the pier! I’m starting to think I might actually be a scale magnet!”

It had been a while since she talked about her pier adventures, so long that she wondered what he had been up to in the time they had spent apart. Alola seemed like a far off dream, so every time she had the chance, she would ask about it. 

“What about you? What brings you to Lilycove? Business or pleasure? Both?”

✿ ~ “I may be a busy man but I always make room for fun!” He took a look at the menu, taking note of some food names he had no idea how to pronounce. “A friend of mine invited me over and I had heard so many amazing things about Hoenn and its strong trainers, I had to take a vacation over the seas!”

     “Even my dad recommended your region and said if I ever had a chance to visit, I should take it without hesitation.”

Meanwhile, Kai sniffed at the PokePuff unsure if it was food or a toy- he mewed in confusion, trying to bounce the puff before taking a small lick. Hau giggled at Kai’s antics. The Raichu finally deciding the Puff was the stuff, wolfed it down with a satisfied chu~.

     “Ah! And dad even mentioned of an organization here in Hoenn, something similar to Team Skull back in Alola, and I’ve been trying to find their bases! I thought it would be a fun adventure but so far, I haven’t found any abandoned city the organization would live in.”

Kukui waited patiently for Hau to collect himself. It really worried him to see the kid so down in the dumps like this. The last time he could clearly recall on seeing him like this was back when they said goodbye to Lillie. He remembered seeing him faced the other way, not wanting anyone to see his tears. Truthfully, he too wanted to cry, feeling as if a part of him was empty but he persevered. Kukui had to be strong for the kids so he plastered on a smile and told him his mantra, something that he’d repeated several times over his life.

When ya sayin’ goodbye t’ someone ya love, ya gotta show ‘em one last smile, yeah!

    ✿ ~ Hau sat on the couch, mind carefully laying out the professor’s words. It was so simple that Hau almost laughed at how silly he was acting- the hurt was still there but Hau felt a lot more empowered than before. He nods and looks up at Kukui.

     “Yeah!” He rubs at his eyes and takes a deep breath- he wouldn’t let himself be down for too long. “It never gets easier but, to know that...there’s always something to take out of it, to grow stronger.”

     “I guess, I was unfair to the girl as well. This is kinda dumb but she reminded me so much of Lillie, before she showed her real side, that I kind of latched onto her.”

  Hau takes a moment to air out his damp shirt and hums- he changed his attire to fit her image. 

     “I acted so differently, hoping she wouldn’t, erhm, leave. Haha, I guess she got tired of it all. And I know Lillie isn’t like that, but part of me always wondered.”

Sharpedo glided across the waves, it’s body cutting through each swell like butter to a hot knife. Fearlessly, the team took one last gulp of air in unison before nose-diving below, a burst of bubbles erupting from where they once were. Antonio, being the natural swimmer he was, was perfectly comfortable being underwater for long periods of time, and it was through that condition that the team shot through the hideout’s opening, desperate to close the distance between themselves and the foreign intruders.

✿ ~ Under the glare of the other man, Hau felt his feet rooted on the cold iron floor. He barely registered Kaleo’s shrill cry as the Soloist pokemon bristled at the Sharpedo, preparing to attack if necessary. At the threat of arrest, Hau frantically waved his arms around and tried to make himself look as unthreatening as possible.

     “Wuh-w- wait! I can explain!” But the man was beyond reasoning and Hau felt panic crawl up his chest. Hau pulled out Kaleo’s pokeball and recalled her.

     “Return!” The last thing he needed was Kaleo to flood the whole base in order to protect him. Then, without another moment of hesitation, Hau turned and scrambled further into base.

     “I don’t want to go to jail- I can’t! Sorry, Officer!” Also you’re really scary looking, he thought. Best not say that out loud.

   Hau chanced a glance behind him, hoping the man wasn’t too close when-

           “WAH! H-help!”

   -the whole world turned a yellowish hue, his body spun around and around as the portal underneath his feet transported Hau to another room. He stumbled to the ground, too disorientated and a little sick to his stomach to stand, and gasped in shock. The room. This was another room!

     “Wow...that’s...that’s so cool.” For a second, Hau forgot he was running from his potential time in prison as he looked back at the glowing yellow panel in front of him. Whatever this base had to offer, Hau wanted to explore more.

     “Kai, what is this place. It’s like Ather’s Foundation but more, uhhh...?” The raichu only shrugged at Hau’s fascination. “You’re right, you’re right. This isn’t the time for this.”

   The panel in front began to glow. Hau quickly scrambled up and flinched at the sharp pain from his ankle. He couldn’t run much farther. Maybe it was best to turn himself in?

   Never! He was the future island kahuna, he couldn’t have the title shamed by police records. Hau frantically jogged down the hallways and ran into the nearest room. There wasn’t much inside, some tables with cloth draped over it, cardboard boxes and various lab equipments. But it was dark. Hau just needed to buy time.

     “Kai, in here!” Hau limped to hide behind a vending machine while Kai floated above the exit sign, somehow squeezing his plump against the wall, hiding himself from view. Hau couldn’t help but let out a, ‘Haha~’ at Kai’s amazing but adorable stunt.

✿ ~ Hau lowered himself back into the deep ocean and followed Kaleo deeper inside the cave. It wasn’t as scary as he first thought. The world grew dimmer the further he swam in, the sound of gentle waves echoed off the rocky walls and he noticed an iron frame surrounding the entrance of the cave- a detail he hadn’t notice before. Kaleo swam further in and Hau took a shaky breath, nervous but too excited to be deterred, and followed his pokemon.

     “Whoa,” he quietly gawked. Kai, using Hau as his human boat echoed his own surprise. The further Hau swam the more he knew the cave wasn’t formed from natural causes- the cave walls, cut and smoothed down, were too clean and there were platforms, some holding crates. He marveled at the lights installed above but flinched at the sound of multiple voices speaking. So there were people here!

   Not wanting to be discovered just yet, Hau quietly swam towards the left wall just underneath one of the platforms and made his way to some stairs- he had to land soon, his legs burned with exhaustion. Even though the cave’s entrance was left unguarded, something told Hau it was best to not to be caught. There was a feeling of tension in the air.

   When his hands grabbed the railings, Hau let out a hot breath of relief and plopped on the stairs. There were still hushed voices but the owner of those voices were nowhere to be seen. Safe! For now. He took this chance to look around some more. 

     “What is this? It’s so cool!” He whispered. “After a quick breather, let’s keep exploring ‘kay? This is kinda exciting.”

   Kai mewed his agreement from Hau’s shoulder, his tail twitching in excitement as the Raichu took some time to groom Hau’s pineapple hair. No sooner after Hau uttered those words, Kaleo popped up from the waters looking visibly anxious and started pointing at the entrance. Brows furrowed in worry as Hau looked at where they came from, seeing nothing much but- was that splashing and a man’s shout? 

     “Huh, someone’s coming!” Hau froze. Does he run or should he pretend he owned the place? Hau was never scared or put off by meeting new people but- Hau looked at the incoming man and decided he seemed pissed off enough with his sharpedo that running would only make the situation worse. What would he tell Hala if he was thrown in Hoenn jail for trespassing? 

     “Hehe..guess we have to do the right thing, Kai...Kai?” Hau shifted his now empty shoulders and frantically searched for the Raichu. Only then did Hau hear muffled shouts and he gasped when he saw Kai use Psychic on two strangers, so they were the disembodied voices, fling them into a room and pile a mountain of crates to block the door.

     “Huk-whaaa! Kai, no!” He wailed and face-palmed as Kaleo’s only response was joyous laughter at Kai’s stunt. Kai must have thought they were going to run and got rid of any eye witnesses- realizing they weren’t running, Kai stopped his antics and floated back to Hau’s shoulders with his ears down in shame.

   The crates still blocked the door.

   Hau’s ears turned bright red, his face painted the same shade and adorned with a sheepish smile. He peered behind his side hair- looking everywhere except the man’s face. From the looks of it, he was a mainlander. Maybe a lifeguard?

     “Uh-hoo...A-alola there...” Hau gave a hesitant Alolan wave before bringing one hand to rub at his neck. He hoped the man wasn’t the Lilycove Police. If he explained his situation, maybe he’ll be let off easy. 

     “Nice day for a swim?” Nervous laugh.

     “Resolutions, you bet! My training to become the next Island Kahuna of Melemele Island is almost done so I hope to finish that up soon. No more sidetracking! 

I have to find an Eevee to add to my team, help out more Team Skull Grunts find their home in Alola, open up my own malasada shop, find my father and, hmmm I should write these down, huh.”
