harry, being the sensitive and anxious guy that he was, sometimes found it hard to express his feelings in a way that didn’t come across as ‘over the top’ or ‘overreacting’ to other people. with perrie, however, he wanted to make sure that nothing was left unsaid. that both of them understand how the other felt.

after perrie and zayn’s breakup, harry found it incredibly hard to separate himself from the drama. while he cared for zayn, being his ex-bandmate, he also cared deeply for perrie. he wanted her to be happy, to feel loved, to feel beautiful. he was there for her, gave her a shoulder to cry on, and of course, both of the artists ended up catching feelings for the other. this was something that made everything that came after very complicated.

sitting in the warm sand, harry ran a hand through his hair, breathing out a deep sigh and staring out at the waves, the sun sinking behind the ocean. his green eyes reflected the beautiful colors; oranges, reds, pinks, and blues. as he waited for perrie to arrive, he felt a sinking feeling in his chest. he simply wasn’t ready to lose her; not yet.

Perrie: I get what you're saying and I appreciate your concern but whats done is done, I cant take it back now and if you're going to totally cut me out of your life because you can't find it in yourself to forgive me, then I guess I don't have much control over that even though it sucks.

zendaya gave him a playful grin. “you know, harry. you’re sending some mixed messages here. you do your best work when you’re away, but you hate being away from home? why do you do this to yourself,” she said playfully. “yeah, stepping away is good for that. but, don’t take this the wrong way, just about everyone in your life back home is here. so have you really stepped away?” she asked with a smile. she finished her drink and ordered another, smiling at him. “i’m glad i can help,” she promised. she nodded in agreement. “exactly. less likely to get hurt. maybe that’s cynical, but it works,” she said with a shrug. she nodded a bit as he shared more. “absolutely. if you can’t talk to someone, how close can you really be to them?”

“well, z, doing your best work doesn’t always mean doing it when you’re happy.” he kept his eyes on her, gauging her reaction to her newfound nickname. “sometimes.. it’s best when you’re experiencing stuff you’ve never experienced before.” he nudged her playfully, laughing at her challenging him. “you’re a spitfire, yeah? i like it. keeps things interesting. but you’re not wrong, however i have way more time to be by myself here, i think. and people act different in different environments. does that make any sense at all? maybe m’more buzzed than i originally thought,” he spoke with a light laugh. “are you afraid of getting hurt? have you been hurt? i wanna know it all.” he placed his chin in his palm, patiently waiting for the girl’s next words.

Perrie: im sorry that i hurt your feelings, i got caught up. id never intentionally hurt someone i care about. you really cant forgive me?

Harry: if you're that uncomfortable with me trying to keep you from getting hurt again by someone who has already hurt you, then its best we arent in each others lives anyways.

“so you’re saying other people are more dramatic compared to me?” kendall raised an eyebrow, grinning to herself. “cause i would definitely agree with that!” her eyes trailed to his hand on her knee before back up to him. “a spa day is always necessary….but definitely drinks. and soaking in the hot tub. and shutting away from the world.”

“i... guess that’s what m’saying, yeah.” he shook his head once, chuckling softly at kendall. “what’s your idea of shutting away from the world? has it changed since.. everything?” he cocked his head at the girl, briefly nibbling on his bottom lip.

“ pretty sure anything about us is plastered all over the internet by now, mate. ” he remarked, though the smile wasn’t quite as wide as usual, given that the comment had eluded to their complete lack of privacy and even invasion of said privacy, a luxury celebrities didn’t seem to have. “ yeah, i do, i get it. and i know where you’re coming from, you know i do, but i don’t think she meant to do anything. she’s definitely not the type to get a kick out of it. that doesn’t change that you are hurt, and it shouldn’t stop you from feeling like that but - i really don’t think she meant to hurt anyone. i don’t know much anymore where zayn’s concerned, obviously, but i also don’t think he’d do anything like that. ” not that he had much knowledge in that area recently.      “ oh piss off. i’m not having that. always here, yeah ? i think you need another drink. ”

“don’t remind me, lou. i feel like we didn’t even really get to experience much of our early twenties because of paps.” he shook his head briefly. “not that i would give it up for anything, our lives are what a lot of people dream about. s’just hard. just wanna be normal sometimes,” he shrugged. “y’know me, tommo. arguably better than anyone. and i want her to live the best, most happy life she possibly can. but i just know that’s not with zayn. and that’s what hurts. she doesn’t realize the hurt he’s causing.” he frowned, looking down at his hands. “not that i.. i hate zayn, or anything like that i just.. i know both of them aren’t good for the other. that hurts so bad, lou.” he squeezed lou’s arm for a second, before standing up and offering a hand. “a drink sounds lovely. join me.”

“ari, if we’re being honest with ourselves, your voice will never go out.” he chuckled a bit, making eye contact. “and if it does, you can make a living in a not so adrenaline-junky way. perhaps, knitting sweaters? something cozy?”

louis listened carefully as harry spoke, feeling the overwhelming instinct to rest a hand on harry’s shoulder, something he actually gave into in the end. eyebrows raising, he offered a light laugh.  “ i’m surprised you kept that from us, actually, you’re usually terrible with secrets. ” he recounted teasingly. “ hey, none of that yeah ? happy days, we’re in bali, on a stress-free holiday. ” it was extremely rare, if not relatively impossible, for the ex-members of one direction to get any time to themselves where their whereabouts weren’t being reported on or known to the public, so this was an opportunity to forget about it all, something louis intended on doing, and something he wanted for the others too. “ so that’s why you’re upset with zayn then ? does he know about you and perrie ? ” he shifted a little, his and harry’s own relationship being something he didn’t quite like to discuss, especially not after this long. “ i get it. are you angry with her ? perrie. ”

louis’ hand on harry’s shoulder sent a warmth through his body, and left the boy feeling comfortable and safe. “yeah yeah, looks like you’re gonna have to make your way back into my life to get all the secrets from me now.” he forced out a light laugh. “you’re right, you’re right. y’know me, though, s’hard for me not to wear my heart on my sleeve. hence the tattoo.” he smirked at lou, finally feeling a bit more lighthearted. “i dunno if he knows. i dunno if i care. i guess i’m just sick of being hurt. i want to be a priority to someone, lou. i give so much, and feel like i get little in return.” he shrugged his shoulders, not wanting to force louis into his problems. “m’sorry for dragging you into all this. not my intention. but, yes, very. she disregarded m’feelings. that’s never a good feeling.”

zendaya hadn’t really been fishing for compliments, but she appreciated the compliment all the same. she smiled at him and nodded. “thank you,” she said simply. she nodded along, thinking all of that made lots of sense. “now you’re away, and by yourself. i understand that. work is work. why are you here, then?” she questioned. it wasn’t a bad thing to talk a lot. “like right now?” she said, smiling softly at him. she nodded, taking a drink from her glass. “thanks. i do my best. i’d rather not have a lot of people, but know i can trust those i do. do you have many of those people?”

“m’here because my manager thought i needed a break, i think i do my best work when it comes to songwriting when i’m away for a while also.” he gave her a soft smile. “it gives me time to think about things, and figure out where i am emotionally, and all that good stuff.” he chuckled at her comment, holding up his glass in agreement. “yea, love, like right now. i really do appreciate you hearing me out.” he settled back in his seat. “like, having 4 quarters instead of 100 pennies. you’re preaching to the choir. s’best to keep your circle small.” he set down his glass before he continued. “i do, but it took me a really long time to open up. once i started going to therapy, i realized that’s what made a friendship great. opening up and sharing things you don’t share with everyone. y’know?”

“ i reckon we could sound pretty good. especially with me and liam on the job. ” the two of them had always been a pretty brilliant team when it came to songwriting, and all four of them had only grown stronger when it came to their abilities, as was to be expected as they got older. “ yeah, definitely agree. we’ve all got a sort of similar element to our stuff, so we could focus on that and go from there. ” it felt nice to talk about things as though they were all still a team. “ yeah. it’s not the best. i haven’t spoken to him properly since that twitter fight. and that was years ago. ” neither of the two had made the effort to reach out, after that. “ perrie ? what’s goin’ on there then ? ” an eyebrow raised. “ i get that. it was sudden, and don’t get me started on the rest of it, but it was time, yeah ? and it was good for him. ” 

tears started to well up in harry’s eyes as he thought about all the turbulence going on in his mind. he shook his head, trying to get the thoughts out of his mind, not only to protect louis, but to protect himself, too. “lou, i don’t even know anymore. we hooked up,” he kept an eye on lou to watch his reactions. “and after the breakup, i...” he trailed off, swallowing to keep the tears off. “we just really connected. i was her shoulder to cry on, i supported her, i did everything i could to protect her. and she... her.. her and zayn hooked up again the other night. just days after we did.” he put his head down, staring at his hands. “i’ve written songs about so many people who have broken my heart. loves that should have been so much more than they were.” he looked back up at louis’ beautiful blue eyes, knowing that louis would understand he was referencing their relationship, too.

“ oh don’t you worry, i’m scanning this water right now for any paparazzi hiding under there, in they’re little scuba suits with those waterproof cameras. ” louis played along with a laugh, feeling at ease around an old band member, his best friend. “ i was thinking about that too. you know, i don’t think it’d be much different. we’re all older, a bit more mature, but being on stage always changes things for me anyway, i think performing with t’boys again would just be like it always was. ” he’d never felt any differently when he’d spent time with any of them during the hiatus.      “ our music would be a right mess though, trynna combine all our styles. we’d make it work though. ” it was amusing to think about. “ i know, it was like a weight off, to be honest. not sure yet, i’m just gonna wait and see what happens really. something’ll come along eventually. but i’m still writing, got stuff in the works ”

he ran a hand through his curls, smirking at lou’s words. “m’trying to figure out what that would sound like, but i can’t imagine that we’d have to include zayn’s style. and i think all of us four’s sounds would go together quite nice. agree?” he shot louis a smile, suddenly more grateful than ever for his friendship and constant support. he knew he could always count on him. always. “i hate the fact that there’s drama between zayn and i. i don’t even know why i’m letting perrie get in between us, if m’honest. but it did hurt when he left anyways, at least for me.”
