idk though I haven't seen people repeat matpat's other bad theories nearly as often as this one. like I've never seen anyone unironically suggest that sans is ness. or that you can tell what gender the pyro is by looking at the proportions of the gloves of their suit. or that it's a good thing when fighting games have hypersexualized female characters because it allows for a strategy where if you pick a sexy character your opponent won't fight as well because he has a boner.

the fan theory that mario from the super mario series is a different person from mario from donkey kong and donkey kong junior. the idea is that since mario is a baby at the same time as a character with the initials dk in a game that has time travel, it doesn't make sense for mario to later in life be older than the child of donkey kong from donkey kong country's grandfather, so therefore there must be two different marios. it's such a bad fan theory on just about every level but it somehow doesn't go away

no but actually the worst part of it is that. they seriously do take it as a given that baby dk has to be the baby version of donkey kong from donkey kong country, because obviously if you look at the character design that's the developer intention. but the whole conceit of the theory relies on the idea that it doesn't matter if the developers intend two characters to be the same person or not! if you thought "well obviously these are meant to be the same character" was sufficient evidence that they're the same character then you would never even consider the possibility that mario from super mario and mario from donkey kong are separate individuals. aaaaaaaaaaaaa

and it's not even a real contradiction... like oh wow, a character named baby dk (it's unspecified which of the characters with those initials it is!) is a baby at the same time as baby mario in a game that has time travel in it. why would you look at that and conclude that this Has To mean that mario can't be older than donkey kong (donkey kong country character). that's such a weird way to interpret it
