“Yearbook,” Jamie corrected. “The school bulletin is written by some wannabe copycat who thinks she’s a journalist. We’re not affiliated.” For all he knew, Hanna was siphoning their theories from their conspicuously held meeting in the yearbook office during off hours. Despite his best efforts to cut her out, he only had so many sweaters to throw over their monstrous murder board at one time and neither Edwina or Emma were tall enough to help. The last thing he wanted was to announce all of his strange ideas to the school and leave a literal paper trail for Doherty and Co. to use as tinder to burn him with.
“I need you to sneak out over that fence. Since you can’t go through it, you have to go over it which means you’re going to need some help.” Jamie paced as he explained, drumming his fingers over his chin as he encouraged his brain to piece together something feasible that didn’t just sound like ‘sacrifice yourself for me and I’ll acknowledge that you’re alright sometimes’.
“I can create a diversion. Something big and flashy that’ll draw the attention of some of the rangers close to the fence. Then, once you get over, I want you to take some pictures of the area. Go as deep as you’re comfortable going and see what you can find. The more pictures you get, the easier it’ll be to examine what’s there and try and figure out what it is we’re looking for.”
He looked at her, expression stoic but his eyes filled with fire and earnest. Jamie didn’t have a lot to his name, but he had his word and his brain which were proving to be the best weapons money couldn’t buy. “You probably only have one shot at this and chances are, you’re looking at some kind of disciplinary action once you come back. Should you choose to accept this quest, I’ll make it worth your while. At least, to the best of my ability.”
Tumblr media
“Right.” Same thing, she thought in her head. But she figured it was in her best interest not to ruffle Jamie‘s feathers. She did know the writer he was talking about, though. “Are you guys not after the same story?” Mickey figured anyone with any kind of journalist leanings would be interested in whatever was going on around campus right now, but, admittedly, school sanctioned media wasn’t her first choice for light reading.
“Yeah. Okay.” Her shoulders slumped into a shrug, figuring this was as good a way to spend her time today as any. And it might benefit her to figure out a new reliable way to sneak off campus since the hole in the fence wasn’t in operation anymore. “I’ll take videos, too. Might be something you spot in the background I wouldn’t think to take a picture of.” Maybe she should’ve been more concerned or at least more inquisitive about Jamie‘s ‘diversion’ but she figured he was dedicated to the cause. Anyway, if that part of the plan fell through she knew she was good at thinking on her feet.
And... she could tell he really cared about this, too, for whatever reason. Part of her wanted to pick his brain on why, but they didn’t exactly have the time for that. “Just out of curiosity, what is worth my while in your mind?” She wasn’t worried in the slightest about the outcome, but to say she wasn’t intrigued about his offering and motives was something else entirely.

“The nuns are all part of the experience, Mickey.”
Jamie peeled away from the window to pace the length of the wall, fingers tapping a restless rhythm against his thigh as he pondered her question. “To keep us from looking in the woods for the answers, of course. There must be something in Lorehill that’s pertinent to the case. I’d go out there myself but you know…” He flagged a hand out the window towards the rangers dotting the courtyard. “They aren’t nearly as lenient on me as they are others. If only there was someone out there who could get away with a little bit of chaos.” Jamie hummed and hawed like he was giving it a lot of thought, but the answer was already out there, suspended in the air and waiting to be plucked out by someone who hated the rules as much as he. Someone whose family still gave a shit about their attendance at Broadripple.
Jamie shot Mickey a look. “You busy this afternoon?”
Tumblr media
“Maybe so. I just wish their eyes were slightly less judgy.” And maybe part of it was her own heightened sense of alarm -- she didn’t necessarily worry, but she was always observing things, and speculating.
She had to admit Jamie had a point. It just didn’t make sense to her, how much trouble they were going to. Unless... they were guilty of something. Shit. Maybe this kid was onto something after all. “I can see why you write for the school paper. Although they might consider changing your title from editor to detective.” Mickey was being facetious, but in her own weird way it was sort of a compliment.
And then... she realized where this was going. Truthfully, she should’ve seen it coming a lot earlier, but she wasn’t put off by it in the least. If anything he was pushing all the right buttons on her ego, and she was glad to finally exercise her skills for a good cause. “You don’t have to butter me up, Ward. Though it is appreciated. You had me at ‘go out there.’” Standing up straighter, she cast a glance towards the woods, the cogs still turning in her brain.
“So what’s our plan of action?”

Were they? Matt could never be too careful when it came to privacy. He pursed his lips for a moment before he eyed around at the hallway. “I guess I mean, somewhere we can’t be overheard.” He attempted to explain quietly. Suddenly his features turned beet red, and he was shifting his weight back and forth in question. Did it sound that pathetic? Oh God. “No, no, no. Not… a that question.” Clearing his throat, he gestured so they could walk amongst one another. “It’s a girl question and you’re you know… a girl.” That was stupid, so Matthew tried to explain further. “You know what I mean. A girl who is very… perceptive.”
Tumblr media
“Wow. This must be really important if you’re being this secretive.” Not that he wasn’t always secretive -- he was. But slowly (some might even say a glacier’s pace), she’d broken him down into more than just one-word sentences. She figured if he needed advice and was coming to her about it, that must’ve meant something she was doing was paying off. And she loved injecting herself into people’s business. Mickey opened her mouth to boo, but instead was cut off by the proposal of a different drama entirely. “Well spotted, Matty.” Opening a door to an empty classroom, she looked back at him to continue after situating herself on the teacher’s desk. “So. Lay it on me. Is it something to do with that girl from the ski trip? I saw her making googly eyes at you all week long. It was cute, in like a gross way,” she teased.

Had she seen it that long or was she bluffing? Narrowing his eyes, Hugo crossed his arms over his chest. “I didn’t do either of those things. I saw you were sitting over here and I just decided to sit by you. Jesus. Don’t make me regret it.” He was aware probably just how dramatic his words sounded, but once she grabbed one of his fries from his tray, his expression lightened up slightly. “Why do you sit by yourself acting moody and broody anyway?”
Tumblr media
Her lips responded to his denial with a small smirk. “Try and sound less defensive, and maybe I’ll believe you.” A tiny sliver of her didn’t want to admit she was actually glad he was here. Maybe even a little thrilled she’d caught him staring. Whether that was a product of her playing a game, or something else, she didn’t give herself time to dwell. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, sizing him up with a stare. “Isn’t that a bit of the pot calling the kettle black? Maybe I like being alone. Gives me time to think about things. It might be hard to believe but I do actually do things outside of you and tinder.” As if on cue, she protectively closed her laptop and slid it back into her bag, not wanting to give him any reasons to ask any more questions. It was a strange paradox, the equal amounts of her that both wanted him to be curious and wanted him not to be. Sometimes, she wondered more as a throwaway thought than anything else, if she was playing with fire. Sometimes she wondered if they both were. Her being an unapologetic succubus and him being a serial cheater.

Jamie cast a side-long glance towards the voice once it spoke back, wondering exactly who it was who thought he didn’t enjoy getting an education when he spent most of his days doing a poor imitation of a Vulcan and spiraling into inconsolable depression two weeks before Summer break. Somehow, he wasn’t surprised to find Mickey there whose only saving grace was that she like, was aware that she was immune to getting crushed by the system? He cocked his head. “I know this might come as a shock to some people, but I like being here. It’s just the staunch hypocrisy that I don’t like.”
Princeton was so abhorrently shameless about its poverty and crime that the idea of the people there trying to present themselves as anything but a load of morally compromised hillbillies with virulent aggressive streaks was laughable at best. At least he could be thankful about that part of his hometown.
Jamie served her another long suffering look. “That’s because it’s not a bear. Come on, Mickey. This whole thing reeks of cover-up. You wouldn’t happen to know anyone whose families may be interested in funding the school, would you? Anyone who’s donated a wing or sponsored a trip, perhaps?”
Tumblr media
She could practically feel the tight gaze of scrutiny darting to her as soon as she spoke, knowing always without question that a frivolous word said in Jamie’s direction was going to result in some type of adverse response. She was a deeply perceptive person, but you didn’t need any kind of radar or sixth sense to predict that. The strange part of it was probably just that she found it so endearing. Not the adverseness. The honesty. “It’s not that much of a shock. I like this place, too. The nuns, however, I could do without.” Add on to that Faith McKay’s strong sense of accountability to them and her prying nose.
And she wasn’t lying about that. BA was a lot of things, but at this point it was as much her home as New York was.
There it was again. The look. This time, it made her wonder. She knew Jamie was smart, not just based on his sparkling conversational wit, but she picked up on things. Sensed things. That’s why instead of looking at him like he was crazy, she allowed the words coming out of his mouth to make sense to her. But she didn’t know if she was ready to hear it. “Okay. But if it was a cover-up for something internal, why the need for the extra manpower?”

Given Matt was intimidated of Mickey, he found it difficult to approach her for any sort of personal life talk. But when push came to shove, she seemed to be the only one who would insert her insight when he didn’t ask, so he wondered what would come out of it if he actually had asked. Figuring he didn’t have a lot to lose, he took a drawn out breath before approaching her after class left out. “Can I talk to you about something… sort of personal? Privately?” He eyed around as if anyone would’ve suddenly eavesdropped their conversation.

Tumblr media
Mickey had been splitting her time between trying to play catch-up for all the class time she was missing sneaking around to see Hugo, and actually sneaking around with him. All those cliche 90′s teen movies she watched had made this situation look so easy. She’d thought to herself a million times she’d never be so stupid as to get herself roped into something like this. And she wasn’t -- roped in. At least that’s what she kept telling herself.
Leaning on the edge of the wall with her eyes distant in thought, she almost looked annoyed at being interrupted until she realized who was speaking to her. Easy mistake, since he didn’t actually address her by name, but there was no mistaking the familiar, quiet tone once the face behind it registered. Her face softened. “Yeah, of course. Are we not talking privately right now?” Everyone around them was either busy themselves or already walking to their next class. Mickey leaned in closer. “It’s not a sex question, is it?”

Hovering ominously in windows to peep at Damian across campus was part of Jamie’s daily routine since the barn party, but that day, he overlooked the school grounds with a different purpose. A scattering of new, foreign bodies peppered the spooky forest around the school and he couldn’t decide whether Broadripple had increased security for them or on them. The whole thing reeked Shawshank, and his curiosity that had been stalled by the trip had increased by folds the longer he watched the guards stalk the perimeter of the school.
“Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like a caged animal?” he asked aloud, too wrapped up in trying to spot an AK-47 from a mile of distance to consider that perhaps he didn’t want to talk to whoever he was addressing. “That’s not suspicious at all.”
Tumblr media
“You mean you don’t feel like that here every other day? As a problem child who is used to evading them, trust me when I say I’d rather have a run in with a ranger than a nun.” She hadn’t spoken to Jamie since the ski trip, but she didn’t have any doubt most of the student body was thinking the same thing right now. It was slightly worrying, but she wasn’t one to show that type of concern. Even if the situation probably called for it.
“Kind of sucks how hard it’s going to be to leave campus undetected now, though. I’ve been through those woods a million times. Never have I ever seen a bear. Or even a whisper of one.”

Hugo didn’t particularly care for confronting situations that had to deal with… emotions. So the topic of what happened over ski trip with Mickey hadn’t been brought up. And he didn’t think it needed to be. It was purely circumstantial sex type-of-roleplaying. That’s why he continued to only hit up Mickey when it was late at night, and he didn’t feel like being stuck alone to face his thoughts. But given the fact he’d accidentally lingered his stare at where she sat in the dining hall for too long, he figured at this point it’d be weird if he didn’t follow up with walking over. “I’m sitting here, don’t make it weird.” He averted his eyes as he dropped his tray against the tabletop and loudly plopped into the chair after scooting it out.

Looking up from her lunch (which she wasn’t all that particularly interested in to begin with -- at least not since she’d caught him staring) Mickey acted nonchalant. Inside herself, though, she was buzzing, and maybe it was obvious from the subtle-but-present smirk on her face. “Make what weird? You staring at me for the last couple minutes or you following me over here like a puppy?” He almost looked like he was sulking about it, which was somehow... endearing. But that wasn’t the kind of thought she’d entertain, and it definitely wasn’t something she’d let be known to him, in her facial expressions or otherwise. Mickey cleared her throat. Without saying anything else she swiped one of his fries.

Hugo rolled his eyes, he was tired of compromising his pride, yet there he was. “No, I don’t think you are.” Stubbornly, he felt was if he was checkmated, and as much as he wanted to downplay it, it wasn’t like he was getting the bad end of the deal. “Good. Little shit.” He murmured into her lips. Raising a brow, he was gonna ask if he was was fixing to bail on him, but instead of sounding like an insecure pussy, he took one of her hands. “I’ll text you the info and meet you up there.”
Tumblr media
“I’d say we can agree to disagree, but I see through your bullshit and I think me speaking for both of us works nicely in this situation,” she grinned, hitting him with that look on her face that made it impossible for most people to say no to. “Call me all the names you want, baby, it’s not gonna kill my vibe.” Mickey was interested to read the reaction on his face. Would he ask questions? Would he seem worried? In the end, it turned out to be neither, but he did look curious. “No, I’ll text you. See you there.” Then she made her way to leave, though not without pressing another kiss to him, missing his lips on purpose so she’d nip his neck instead.

honestly guys...... idek what to say right now. it feels weird even typing this bc im still???? hardcore dissociating??
basically a bunch of real life™ stuff has been happening. i’m not gonna get into detail or anything but tbh being busy wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t for the state of my mental health. idk if any of y’all know anyone who has it or has experienced it themselves but depersonalization is no joke. i can’t even get a handle on my own mind let alone my character’s when that’s happening so i’m sorry for missing so much stuff.
i usually don’t talk about it bc if it does happen it’s just a temporary episode so i just kind of deal with it and force myself to function but uh clearly that hasn’t been happening lmao. it’s been pretty debilitating for like the past few weeks and i know it’s fucked up to apologize for something i can’t control but i still feel really bad about it. i love BA and i don’t wanna let anyone down so it just sucks that this winter and move situation has been so bad for me in terms of health
umm anyways i’m rambling so tldr; i’m sorry for being useless garbage and i promise i’m going to reply to some things tonight and the rest soon.
xx

“I think you’re wrong.” He challenged even if she did have a good point. He was too stubborn to admit anything, especially when they were in attempt to pretend. Goddamnit. She was really a little shit about specifics. He admired and respected the hell out of that, but he didn’t want her to know that. Murmuring quietly, under his breath, he started. “You’re right… I love Titanic and Celine. And I’ll book the dumb suite.” He rolled his eyes as if none of it was true, and he didn’t wanna book the suite, even if he did. Hugo didn’t want Mickey to think she could always get exactly what she wanted. “Happy?”
Tumblr media
“I think you know I’m right.” Mickey smirked, enjoying just how pliable he was around her. She never wanted to let her guard down too much, but this was the closest she’d come in a while. Then, a full on grin spread from her lips, wanting to hide her face in his shoulder and giggle but instead she kept her face calm, nodding. “Very.” As if to reward him, she leaned forward, catching him in a pressing kiss. When she pulled back, she almost regretted what she was about to say. “I’ll meet you there. I have something to do first.”
