February is Black History Month - a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions that Black people have made not just in the United States, but throughout the world. It is also National Cancer Prevention month, and it is also important to note the inequities and injustices that are still faced within the Black community, particularly with cancer prevention.
Studies show that cancer screening rates are often lower among Black communities. In addition, social determinants of health - the conditions in which people are born live, and work - can affect cancer outcomes and access to quality care, like screenings. These disparities, which are often faced by Black communities, are difficult to overcome and can have a cascading effect on and prevention methods.
Recognizing that these disparities exist and making sure that clinicians, patients, and communities are aware of them is important. Also, raising awareness around prevention and early detection as a first line of defense is key knowledge for patients.
