Permira Funds acquires Reformation, plans international expansion
Robyn Turk
|
Thursday, July 11 2019
Reformation is going to Canada. The LA-based sustainable womenswear label has been acquired by private equity firm Permira Funds, who is opening Reformation's first Canadian store on Thursday, July 11.
Permira Funds has significant experience backing popular consumer brands and helping these brands to expand their international retail footprints. It has invested in brands including Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Proenza Schouler, Hugo Boss, Valentino and The Knot Worldwide.
“Uniquely positioned at the intersection of fashion and sustainability, Reformation authentically speaks to today’s consumer,” Permira's principal David Brisske said in a statement. “Yael [Aflalo] has done an incredible job building a brand and a company with a clear mission, beautiful products and a loyal following. It’s rare for a business to have both tremendous brand strength and first-rate omnichannel capabilities, as Reformation has."
Yael Aflalo, who founded Reformation in 2009, will continue service as CEO and maintain significant ownership of the company. Hali Borenstein remains president.
Reformation currently operates 14 retail locations in the U.S., an international e-commerce business, and wholesale partnerships with retailers including Nordstrom and Farfetch. With Pemira's backing, Reformation is slated to grow its international sales. Along with the new store in Toronto, Canada, Pemira expects to open a Reformation in London this fall.
“When we met with the Permira team, it was clear that they shared our commitment to sustainability, and have a strong understanding of how to best navigate the complex and rapidly changing consumer market," Alfalo said. "Their partnership allows us to expand our business domestically and internationally and launch into new product categories, taking us one step closer to our mission of bringing sustainable fashion to everyone.”

Rehab of 114-Year-Old Warehouse Wraps Up in the Arts District
After two years, Los Angeles-based RYDA has wrapped up work on its renovation of a 113-year-old warehouse in the Arts District.
The property, located at the corner of 3rd Street and Traction Avenue, includes a four-story structure which was built in 1905 by the Richards-Neustadt Construction Company.
RYDA's renovation of the building, as designed by Abramson Architects, activates previously unused rooftop areas and alleys as tenant amenity spaces.  The building will include four live/work apartments and 40,000 square feet of combined retail and restaurant space.
RYDA, led by brothers Daniel and Ryan Neman, are not strangers to commercial rehabilitation projects, having previously restored the historic Pettebone Building on Broadway, The five-story building sold last year for $22-million to Korean gaming company NHN Global, which uses the early 20th-century structure as its American headquarters.
A short distance east on 3rd Street, Fairfield Residential and Legendary Development completed construction of a 472-unit apartment complex earlier this year.  The project, called The Aliso, replaced a vacant lot adjacent to SCI-Arc.

Wednesday, August 21 2019
Sustainable fashion design pioneer Stella McCartney and pop star Taylor Swift have collaborated on a ready-to-wear and accessories collection.
The collection, which can currently be previewed in a lookbook published on Swift's website, is set to coincide with the debut of her new album "Lover," which will release on August 23. Swift will show the collection in more detail at 5 p.m. EST on August 22 during a Youtube Live video.
McCartney and Swift met in London during one of Swift's concerts. Swift told Rolling Stone that she had such a connection with the designer that she mentioned McCartney in one of the songs in the upcoming album, then asked McCartney if she would be interested in forming a collaboration.
The two named their clothing collection after Swift's album title. "Lover," the ready-to-wear line, includes jackets, dresses, T-shirts, sweatshirts, handbags, hats and tote bags. Everything was made according to McCartney's sustainability standards, which include eco-friendly manufacturing and the exclusion of leather.

Ascena Retail Group is making executive changes. Dan Lamadrid, currently the company's senior vice president of finance and chief accounting officer, has been promoted to the roles of executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective August 4. He will replace Robb Giammatteo, who intends to leave the company at the end of August.
Lamadrid will report directly to chief executive officer Gary Muto. He had worked closely with Giammatteo over the last two years. The former chief financial officer will act as a senior advisor throughout August.
“We have a strong successor in Dan, who has played a critical role in our transformation and strategic portfolio review," Muto said in a statement. "He is a highly accomplished finance executive and I look forward to his partnership."
Ascena Retail Group has recently faced financial struggles with its Dressbarn brand, which "has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today’s retail environment.” The company is in the process of shutting down all Dressbarn operations, though it has shared that none of its other brands will be affected. Its portfolio includes LOFT, Lou & Grey, Lane Bryant and Justice.

Alber Elbaz to launch womenswear
Don-Alvin Adegeest
|
Thursday, July 11 2019
Alber Elbaz, the beloved French designer who was fired from Lanvin in 2015, is thought to be launching womenswear under his own name.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph Elbaz stated he plans to launch his own womenswear label, but questioned how to make it relevant in the era of sneakers. He further iterated in the words of Yves Saint Laurent, "no one needs a fancy dress until they have passed 30, so you have to approach fashion in a different way. Maybe linking with tech.”
The revelation comes as Elbaz debuted a collaboration with Tod's Factory project to the press, a capsule range of loafers, sneakers, ballet pumps and bags, which will launch online and in store on 15 July, with a second drop scheduled for September.
This is Tod's second collaboration with a designer, after a 20 piece collection with Alessandro Dell'Acqua was unveiled last year.
Speaking with Vogue, Elbaz said "maybe shoes are the new cars—that’s how I imagined this project. I also wanted to change the shoe’s sole without changing the soul of Tod’s.”
The first drop released features a 450 euro chunky loafer in a crocodile print and multi-coloured slip-ons. Called Happy Moments, Elbaz transformed the Tod's spirit with inventiveness, brightness and colour.

Report: Agent says LeBron James would be playing right now if it were the playoffs
LeBron James still has to wait until next week before he can return to practice with the Los Angeles Lakers, but according to his agent the superstar is feeling good enough to play right now if he really wanted to.
According to a report from Fox Sports 1’s Chris Broussard on Wednesday, James’ agent Rich Paul claimed that James would be playing right now if the Lakers were in the playoffs and that he’s only holding back to make sure he’s 100 percent upon his return.
If the Playoffs were taking place right now, LeBron would be playing. https://t.co/OAI9vfSsxH
— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) January 16, 2019
That’s certainly an understandable course of action for James and the Lakers, who will need the four-time MVP to be at his absolute best if they have any hope of making a run through the house of horrors that is the playoffs in the Western Conference.
However, to get to that point, the Lakers first have to make the playoffs. And the team has shown it needs James for that, too. Since James went down with a groin injury on Christmas Day during a win over the Golden State Warriors, the Lakers are 5-7 and have fallen from fourth place in the Western Conference standings to a tie for eighth with the Utah Jazz. They run the risk of falling even further as they navigate a particularly tough stretch of games on their schedule.
James will miss at least one more game on Saturday against the Rockets and is cleared to practice starting next week. Whether or not he wants to play the Lakers’ first game next week against the Warriors on Monday might just be up to him.

Dutch online outlet Otrium receives 7 million EUR from Index Ventures
Marjorie van Elven
|
Thursday, May 02 2019
Index Ventures, the venture capital firm backing Asos, Farfetch and Net-a-Porter, has invested 7 million euros (approximately 7.8 million US dollars or 6 million pounds) in Otrium, a Dutch marketplace where brands can sell their unsold stock with discounts of up to 75 percent. In addition, Index partner Danny Rimer is set to join Otrium’s board of directors.
This is not the first time that the platform created by Milan Daniels and Max Lijnstra receives a capital injection. Since its inception, in 2016, the company has been backed by several investors, including Fred Gehring and Ludo Onnink, former CEO and CFO of Tommy Hilfiger, respectively.
Otrium partners up with over 100 fashion brands, including Vans, Pepe Jeans and G-Star Raw, allowing them to open an online outlet with minimal effort as the company takes responsibility for the storage, sale and shipping of the items. All fashion brands have to do is select which items in their inventory they want to sell. Currently, more than 600,000 people are subscribed to the platform.
Otrium is present in most of Europe and intends to use the money to expand and strengthen its international presence. “We’re currently expanding our activities in the most promising markets: Germany, UK, Denmark and Sweden. After that, we’ll keep an eye open for new markets to enter”, the company wrote in an email to FashionUnited.

Man Smashes Brig Window With Bird Scooters
Unidentified man breaks window, throws two scooters into bar.
By Sam Catanzaro
An unidentified man has been caught on security footage throwing two Bird scooters through a front window of The Brig on Abbot Kinney.
The incident occurred on October 3, but the footage was not released until last week when the owner of The Brig, David Paris, filed a police report with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The footage shows an unknown man using the handles of a Bird scooter as a battering ram to shatter a small window in front of The Brig building on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Once the glass has been broken, the footage shows that man tossing the entire scooter into The Brig through the shattered window. He then goes on to toss a second scooter into the window.
The assailant’s motives are currently not known. Yo! Venice has reached out to the LAPD and the Brig seeking further information, but have not received a response yet.
Watch the security footage of the incident below:

Swiss forward GaĂŤtan Haas is reportedly close to signing with the Oilers
It looks like Ken Holland is going to dip into the European free agent market again. A few weeks after inking Swedish winger Joakim Nygard to a one-year deal, a report from Switzerland indicates the Oilers are closing in on a deal with centre GaĂŤtan Haas of SC Bern.
NHL: GaĂŤtan Haas to join the Edmonton Oilers? #SCB #Oilers https://t.co/eakaTUwy8c
— swisshockeynews.ch (@SwissHockeyNews) June 25, 2019
Per the report…
27-year-old Haas is close to signing a deal with the Edmonton Oilers, as Watson reports. The forward was said to have been offered a contract over a month ago by the same source but was not yet allowed to disclose from which team. Jaro Turma, his agent, confirms having received the offer.
Haas signed a contract extension with Bern back in January which includes an NHL-out clause for this summer which would allow him to leave for North America.
Haas, a 27-year-old Swiss centre who has played his entire career in his home country, scored 15 goals and 38 points in 50 games for SC Bern last season. He also went on to put up three points in eight games for Switzerland at the World Hockey Championships.
According to a scouting report from Elite Prospects, Haas plays a smart and responsible two-way game…
Gaetan Haas is an offensive center, who plays a reliable and smart two-way game. An excellent skater, who reaches very good top-speed and can make end-to-end rushes. Has soft hands and strong puck-skills. Haas sees the ice well and can play the point on the Power Play, distributing the puck using his excellent vision. He leads by example by competing hard for the puck, doing solid backchecking and not being afraid blocking shots, rounding out his solid defensive game. Haas can lead a team’s shutdown line.
Haas’ numbers in Switzerland aren’t eye-popping. For the sake of comparison, former Oiler Mark Arcobello led Bern in scoring with 53 points. But the scouting report about him being a two-way player who can drive a defensive line makes him an interesting player who could potentially plug a hole in Edmonton’s bottom-six.
The Oilers need to find cheap talent that can help up front and the European free agent market provides some interesting options. The thing with these signings is that there’s virtually zero risk attached. Maybe you can find a solid depth player. At the very worst, all you’ve lost is a spot on your 50 contracts list.

Rich home buyers are ‘test-driving’ multimillion-dollar mansions
Because all these developments target high-net-worth individuals, sales teams often charge hefty fees to ensure prospects are legitimate. “If you don’t charge anything and you don’t vet, you get what we call ‘speeders’ — since they speed right past the sales gallery,” says Greg Spencer, chief executive of Timbers Resorts, a developer and operator of residence clubs around the globe. His company launched a “guest visit” program in November at Timbers Kiawah, a development on the Atlantic Coast’s Kiawah Island, where guests can stay for $1,200 a night.

LA’s next big earthquake could displace 270,000 people
In the three days after the Northridge Earthquake, sociologist Paul O’Brien trekked to the epicenter to collect survivors’ stories. He spoke with 31 survivors, some over the phone, but for the most part, he met people where they were lodging during those first few days and nights: on the street.
“One could not drive down any street in the Northridge section of town, and not find tents staked out on lawns, in parks, and anywhere else residents could find room,” he wrote in a research report published the same year.
Twenty five years later, experts still look back at Northridge to prepare for the inevitable: The next “Big One” will force hundreds of thousands of people out of their houses. How authorities respond to the crisis will largely determine the number of people displaced—and how long they will have to wait until they can return to home.
“It is a bit daunting if we were to have the Big One, just because LA is so big and so densely populated,” says Sonya Young-Jimenez, an emergency management coordinator for the city’s recreation and parks department, which shoulders the immense task of identifying and assessing sites for potential disaster shelters. “We’re talking hundreds of thousands of people being affected.”
The impact will be felt more intensely for some Angelenos than for others. It’s expected that those who can afford it will either flee or profit, increasing the value of their homes through renovations made with insurance payouts. Those who can’t will be left with fewer resources to pick up the pieces.
What unfolds in the aftermath could permanently change LA’s demographics, potentially exacerbating the gap between the rich and poor and even causing regional depressions. A short-term shelter crisis could evolve into a long-term community-building crisis. The general anxiety reported after natural disasters could result in so many people moving away that businesses shutter.
Tumblr media

AFP/Getty Images
In 2008, a team of scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey used complex computer models to simulate what would happen if a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the San Andreas fault.
The report, titled ShakeOut, estimates that quake would kill 1,800 people; rupture 966 roads, 21 railroads and 32 aqueducts; down 141 power lines; and damage 300,000 buildings.
As many as 270,000 people across Southern California would be displaced from their homes. About 500 public shelters would be needed to house roughly 175,000 of those people—nearly double the population of Santa Monica—because they wouldn’t be able to find shelter with family or friends or in hotels.
The biggest issues first responders and evacuees will face won’t be the ones caused by the quake itself. The real trouble will start after the ground stops shaking, says Lucy Jones, seismologist and author of The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters have Shaped Us.
Fires, water shortages, limited transit, job accessibility, and communication outages like the loss of cell phone service will exacerbate the damage and displacement.
“You get this compounding problem,” says Jones. “The economic system works because we all feed on each other. If employees aren’t going to work, then they’re also not going to eat at the nearby restaurant. Every one individual job has impact.”
Today, rising temperatures and changing intensity of winds could potentially be survivors’ worst enemy. As Jones laments, the Santa Ana Winds could stoke fires sparked by the quake, into fires not unlike the Woolsey and Camp Fires at the end of 2018.
Those issues could be complicated by the current homelessness crisis, leaving hundreds of thousands of Angelenos without temporary or even short-term shelter.
Officials are acutely aware that LA’s worsening housing shortage could raise the number of people displaced after a disaster. If hundreds or thousands of housing units were made inhabitable due to earthquake damage, even more people would be searching for new places to live.
Last year’s horrific wildfires are a tragic example, with tens of thousands of people displaced from the Camp Fire swamping the city of Chico.
The fires have presented incoming California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his office of emergency services an opportunity to change the way the state responds and delivers aid.
“That we still have a lot of people in shelters is indicative that we’re still learning,” says Tina Curry, the department’s deputy director of planning and preparedness. “But sometimes shelter operations can be extended and we’ll have to learn to support that.”
A loss of housing after the Woolsey Fire has created a surge in renters and spikes in listings, forcing the city of Malibu to put price gouging rules into place indefinitely.
Hefty payouts from insurance companies also fuel the problem. Updating insurance policies to a loss-of-use type is an effective way to prepare for a disaster, but as Jason Ballman, communications manager at the Southern California Earthquake Center emphasized, it also has priced people who don’t have insurance, or can’t afford it, out of the game.
In the case of Malibu and the Woolsey Fire, “some people who lost homes—and could afford it—simply left the country for the rest of the year,” Sandro Dazzan, real estate agent with The Agency told The Real Deal.
In 1994, people who could afford it named the earthquake as the catalyst for leaving California for good, as the New York Times chronicled in a 1994 article. As experts point out, and as the Los Angeles Times has reported, the population in Los Angeles has only ever dipped four times—two of those times occurring in the years following the Northridge quake.
If Californians were to flee, all eyes are on Arizona as the most probable state to absorb SoCal’s potential refugees—so much so that Phoenix leaders spent the latter part of 2018 running drills in the event that the Big One does come.
But what happens to those who choose not to leave?
Data collected after Northridge indicates people will head outside, to parks, open areas, anything away from a building, as long as it’s relatively near their own homes.
The recreation and parks department is preparing for many people to form tent camps in open spaces or on their front lawns. Official shelters, like those operated by the Red Cross and other agencies, will be set up in recreation facilities and public buildings.
“We do assessments of all our sites,” said Young-Jimenez. “And our partner is the Red Cross. Every week they’re assessing something. It’s pretty much ongoing.”
For many others, staying in LA will not be a choice.
“One statistic claims that for affluent white men, it takes an average of seven days to return home post-disaster, but for poor women of color, it takes an average of seven years,” says ShakeOut co-author Dennis Mileti, retired sociologist and director emeritus of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder, citing findings published by natural disaster sociologist Robert Bolin after the Whittier Narrows Earthquake in 1987.
“I keep telling people: Stop worrying about the earthquake killing you, start worrying about the earthquake bankrupting you.”
Young-Jimenez’s department is using software that layers socioeconomic data on top of geographic and seismic data to model potential scenarios. The models can be used to identify how poorer areas of the city—those with older homes that most likely haven’t been retrofitted—would be affected by a major earthquake, in comparison to more affluent areas.
The reality is that earthquakes are indiscriminate. As Jones puts it: “Earthquakes shake everybody.”
But because of the difference in quality of infrastructure and lack of accessible resources people in lower-income communities face, the effects are often not.
“If you’re poor, you’re more likely to live in substandard housing, and be in a job that says to you, ‘Oh hell, give up,’” Jones says. “I keep telling people: Stop worrying about the earthquake killing you, start worrying about the earthquake bankrupting you.”
It’s also essential to consider where people come from, says Joselito Garcia-Ruiz, regional disaster program officer for the Red Cross’s LA Region.
“I came to work during Northridge, and I saw with my own eyes that many people from Central America and Mexico at that time were afraid to go inside the shelters, because they came from the ’85 earthquake in Mexico and they brought with them that experience,” he said.
While the long-term effects of a major quake could forever alter the economic and cultural landscape of Los Angeles—potentially sending its most vulnerable communities into economic depression while more affluent residents flee—there may be another surprising outcome.
Natural disasters are also good at knocking down social barriers.
Those unplanned shelters that popped up in 1994 were established not only out of convenience, but because of the bonds that had formed across walls both real and socially constructed. People—neighbors who may not have known each other until their homes were destroyed—wanted to be near each other.
“Even people who before a disaster hated each other, will end up hugging and kissing each other,” said Mileti. “It brings the best out in humanity.”

Renderings: Two high-rise apartment towers planned near the Purple Line in Koreatown
Developer Jamison Services’s plan to build two apartment towers that will each rise more than 20 stories on a site behind Central Plaza at Mariposa and Wilshire in Koreatown is becoming clearer. That’s thanks to new renderings presented to the Wilshire Center Koreatown Neighborhood Council and first spotted by Urbanize LA.
Plans for the project were proposed three years, but this is the first set of renderings that have been available publicly. To make way for the new structures, Jamison will raze a three-story parking garage on the site—but will build plenty of new parking as part of the project.
The towers, designed by CallisonRTKL, would rise 28 and 23 stories tall, respectively, atop a four-story podium. The towers would contain 641 apartments, a mix of studio and two-bedroom units. Both of the towers would have rooftop amenity areas.
The new structures would bring 18,454 square feet of commercial space to the area.
The site is just around the corner from the Metro station at Wilshire and Normandie, but plans call for a whopping 1,922 parking spaces. (The podium would have two underground stories, as well, to accommodate parking.)
About a block away, at Sixth and Ardmore, Jamison wants to build a 32-story tower and a 14-story tower as part of a residential and retail complex that would take up half of that block.
About two blocks west of that, Jamison is hoping to plop two 23-story towers atop an existing parking garage at 3600 Wilshire. That project would bring 760 apartments to the neighborhood.

Six Townhomes With Retail Planned in Eagle Rock
A vacant building in Eagle Rock is set to make way for a small mixed-use development, according to an environmental study published last week by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning.
The nearly quarter-acre project site, located at 1525 Colorado Boulevard, is currently improved with an approximately 90-year-old building that was most recently an auto repair shop.  Applicant Carlie Yapp proposes to demolish the single-story building to make way for the construction of six townhouse units with slightly over 1,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and parking for 14 vehicles.
The proposed development would stand just over 46 feet in height, and would be capped by an approximately 3,600-square-foot roof deck.
A timeline for the project is not stated in the report.
