No programs for the next couple weeks as we mourn the passing of my mother Jane Kingman McDonough. She was one of a kind, with no lack of opinions on most things including music, for which we shared a deep appreciation. She always supported our efforts at creating memorable radio, and we will dearly miss our conversations. Rest easy Mom, enjoy the voyage.

Tonight's episode is a bit messy, but overall I think it holds together pretty well. We kick things off with several tracks from Superchunk's latest collection of odds and sods, called Misfits and Mistakes, where the many single tracks and b-sides they've recorded in the last 20 years have been gathered. Then we round out the Side A with a few other items from the archives. Then on Side B, we feature tracks from Bloodshot Records and others. All in all, a nifty package of music that's sure to please the ears! And only available at RadioRadioX.com , Thursdays 7pm.

The above picture was taken by our nephew Ryan up in Burlington, VT. on Monday during the solar eclipse totality. We didn't experience quite the same scenario here in the Capital Region, but it was an interesting day nonetheless and served as a bit of inspiration for what music we selected to share on this week's episode. Here's what we played.

This being the final program for the month of March and that month being Women's History Month, it seemed appropriate to feature some fab soul and rhythm and blues by female artists, including a trio of tunes by "Lady Soul" herself, Aretha Franklin. I've had this 2 CD collection of rare and unreleased material from her in the collection for years, and sadly have rarely given it a complete listen. So we try and rectify that right off the top. On Side B, we got stuff from those crazy "Stompin'" collections, the "East Side Story" compilations from East L.A. and more, great soulful vocals and mid-tempo grooves galore..

With this week's episode happening the day after Valentine's Day, we thought we would extend the love theme a bit and play a few of our fave "slow jams" from the 80's on Side A. On the flip side, we serve up a bevy of classic harmony vocals from the Doo Woo era, all having to do with the highs and lows of personal relationships from the perspective of the 1950's and 60's.. Hopefully all of it will help extend those warm fuzzies you have generated during V-Day and carry them forward! Hey we do what we can...

We continue our month-long spotlight of black musical genres as a way of celebrating Black History Month here on Howling at the Moon and this weeks episode heads to the Midwest of the country, and Detroit and Chicago specifically. Side A features some great examples of techno by pioneers such as Carl Craig, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, mixed up by yours truly. So being huge fans of most genres of black music, we will once again seize the opportunity to spotlight some of our favorites and hopefully some of yours too! We've been meaning to return to a terrific multi-disc collection which was released last year called "Written in the Their Souls : The Stax Songwriters Demos" and we finally have gotten to it on this week's episode. Today is Robert Burns Day, which is of no significance to this week's episode other than the fact that we are celebrating a couple other birthdays as well, those being our dear pal A.K. and our fab Lagotto "Dutch"! Not to slight Mr. Burns who is a Scottish national treasure and cultural icon, but we only have an hour, so his inclusion will have to be limited to these sentences. Confused yet? That's a haggis pictured above, by the way. Raise a wee dram to us all! Anyway, we feature some selections from the birthday gal on Side A, and on Side B we spin a raft of new stuff from the latest curated CD from our friends at Uncut Magazine.

This week's episode is pretty typical for the program, in that we spin some brand new stuff, mixed in with some older offbeat tracks from the archive. What's fun is that it was inspired by a chat exchange with a fellow radio producer/dj friend Jim McGuinn Slusarek, who shared his new band's brand new song, "Some Kinda Gold" which kicks off the show. We also play the new single from perennial fave Buffalo Tom, whose new album "Jump Rope" will be out in the spring. The rest of the program as we said is well, you decide! It made sense to us anyway...
One quick note before we get to the playlist, we are posting files from previous episodes on our Soundcloud page , so if you miss it live you can revisit later. Enjoy..

This week's episode is partially a redux of our first episode of 2023, with a first half tribute to two of the best American songwriters to ever put pen to paper, and who coincidentally both left this mortal coil on January 1, 1953 and 1997 respectively. And because we are huge fans of classic Country & Western, it made sense to fill out the rest of the episode with some of our faves from that genre. Happy New Year everyone, let's make it a good one shall we?
