I created this little film in response to a challenge to craft a visual accompaniment to music, choosing a trio for saxophone, clarinet and piano by Jeffrey Chappell. Instead of taking a filmmaker-driven approach, I elected instead to absorb the historical context of the setting, in homage to the 19th century artworks that once adorned its walls, by exploring the greatest works of painter Caspar David Friedrich at his 250th anniversary, who is frequently regarded as the the most important of that same early 19th century period. Even though the composer's envisioned landscapes identify with Alba, Friedrich's mystical and classical style can be seen to intersect through universal visions of nature and spirituality from the Old World. I also elected to honor this challenge with rhythmically flexible content that does not demand attention from the musicians or audience, but instead, provides an honorific backdrop to the pure music experience of hearing the composer's work. I filmed this footage at the Alte Nationalgalerie of Germany in October 2023.

This is a tribute to the famous meme by composer and trombonist Alex Heitlinger, who strung out 41 clips of musicians playing the same "lick," crowd-sourced by an online community. While the 2011 video celebrates each performer's individuality full-screen, this presentation accumulates them into a visual chorus: keeping faithful to each clip as originally seen and heard, but emphasizing their plurality in a timeless music motif.

I remastered the source clips into higher resolution, with artifacts cleaned and colors graded, just to compensate for imbalance in the original lo-fi media. The 41 remastered clips populate sequentially into a 15-panel matrix at the 4K resolution presented here. We Are the Dinosaur is a street-rant lament for the state of the planet delivered to an unsuspecting public seemingly content to yawn and go about its business while the Poet bumrushes the Courthouse, whispers in the ear of the Anonymous Businessman, suggests a cannibal diet at the site of the Nation’s first capital, takes flight at the Oculus near the World Trade Center, and swims against the implacable tide of humanity in Times Square. With a wrench-raucous score by Marc Ribot, energized-intrusion cinematography by director H. Paul Moon, and an over-the-top-and-then-some performance by poet Bob Holman, this poem promises to either explode the dead-soul reactions of the populace to climate crisis or become a deconstructive language bomb that blasts open the Gates to Kingdom Come.
