The explanation was unexpected and Kurt half wanted to laugh and half wanted to believe him. It was one of those moments, like in books or movies, when you were presented with such a strange decision to make that it didn't seem real. But he remembered how coy Sebastian used to be. How he'd make him feel wanted and then he'd flat out tell him he wasn't and then he'd leave! What was he supposed to do? Believe him? "Yeah right," he rolled his eyes and mumbled. "If you think I'm still the same gullible, over sensitive, weak Kurt, well-- yeah I'm not most of those things anymore... As much," he rolled his eyes and shook his head. Sebastian was the only person who made him act like this. Feel like this.
"Even if that is the truth how can it be? The news says it's far from here. There's been no reports locally and the army hasn't called for anyone to prepare," Kurt knew it was stupid to speak like that. Especially to someone who was... Is... In the war themselves. "When you have a better reason to waste my time with then try again." Kurt moved to shut the door again.
Half the Battle
Sebastian wasn’t enitrely surprised to see the door slam in his face after only a moment. He was more surprised that Kurt had opened it back up before he could knock again. There were two options here: getting him out as quickly as possible, or groveling and making him forgive him first. Sebastian knew hew ould have to explain, but there was so little time, he wasn’t sure where to start. Being flustered and confused really annoyed him, given that, before he’d met this boy, he was always so well put together.
"There’s not a lot of time for me to explain right now. Just. We need to go. I’ll let you hit me or whatever later and I’ll even give you the full explanation of where I’ve been. You just need to come with me." He knew that explanation was awful. He just didn’t know how to word it to make it seem less ominous. "I’ve been in the war, and it’s about to come here. You need to come with me, get out of here before it does."
While that was the least effective explanation he could offer, he hoped it would be enough to convince Kurt to get some stuff and go with him. “There’s not a lot of time. They oculd show up anytime.”

He didn't know how long it'd been. He didn't know because he'd forced himself to stop counting, to stop hoping, and to stop letting himself feel that pathetic feeling where he actually thought he might matter even a little bit. How difficult was it to send a text message? All he had to do was use a few simple words-- Kurt had even spent hours listing the ones necessary to get the biggest message in the fewest characters possible. But it didn't matter because he wasn't thinking about it. He wasn't peeking out his window every time he passed or listening for cars that reminded him of Sebastian's. He wasn't secretly praying for him to not only come back but to be safe and still alive.
The knocks at the door were unexpected and made him jump. His bagel was half eaten and in his hastiness to get up from his cross legged seat on the floor he didn't realize the smear of Nutella from the corner of his mouth to mid cheek. Maybe it was Rachel, they had considered meeting up that day but he had kept his phone close and she hadn't texted him anything about coming by. "Rachel I'm still in my jammies you didn't give me a--" he began speaking from the other side of the door as he unlocked it but abruptly stopped when the person on the other side was so not Rachel Berry.
This was like de ja vu only it wasn't because it had in fact happened once before. Slamming the door in his face, Kurt stared at the other side and furrowed his brow. Hadn't him coming back been what he wanted? Hadn't he had a different feeling about today? He was getting what he wanted! So what was he doing?!
Flinging the door back open he crossed his arms and immediately puffed up his chest. "What do you want? And it better be good or I'm punching you in the nose and I am not going to feel bad about it."
Half the Battle
It had been months, and Sebastian knew this was not going to be easy.  Having disappeared without a word again, even if his excuse was pretty much soundproof, and he knew that Kurt would have more than harsh words for him.  He knew that there was a slight chance Kurt would kill him, probably only figuratively, but that would have to wait until after he convinced him to leave.  This place wasn’t safe anymore.  It was about to become a war zone, and Kurt was unaware.
Sebastian mustered up all his courage, knowing that he might very well suffer in a few minutes, before he walked up to the door, knocking on it loudly.  It wasn’t too late, but Sebastian didn’t know what he might be doing.  He braced himself for a level of anger he’d yet to feel from the other boy.  He hoped that his battered appearance, given that he’d been in the middle of the war, would soften the blow, but he doubted it.  Bruises and cuts along his arms and face were hardly anything to be concerned about, but he could always hope a little pity would cause Kurt’s anger to dissipate before he tried to kill him.  He knocked again, before standing back, his hands in his pockets.

Kurt examined Sebastian's reactions and responses to not only what he said but what he did. The lack of response made him wonder if he was pushing things. If perhaps he was hoping too much. "Okay," he cleared his throat when Sebastian more or less said no to a doctor. Squeezing his hand once more, he released it slowly and folded his own hands in his lap. "Uhm... Right, I should let you rest," he shook his head as if he just realized this.
Sebastian shook his head. "No. Why bother? There's not much to be done about ribs. 'Be careful and don't fuck them up more'. That's really all I can do." He replied, leaning his head back against the couch. He kept his eyes on Kurt, a little confused about what was happening. "You're welcome I guess..."

Though he wished he was proven otherwise about the status of their friendship, he guessed that's just how things were. He knew Sebastian always had specific requirements for things that were his, high expectations for everything. "Yeah," he agrees softly, not letting his ache show. "Thank you for coming back," he lifted his eyes again, offering a small smile before squeezing Sebastian's hand, lifting it and kissing the back side. "Will you go to the doctor tomorrow?"
Sebastian nodded a little. They definitely weren't boyfriends, and friend was still sort of tentative. He wouldn't admit it, but he'd be pretty damn protective of Kurt if it came to the war, and there was only one other person he could say that about. "More than acquaintences, at least." He confirmed, but he didn't have a better definition for it right now, because everything still confused him. "Good. Because despite how shitty this place may seem, its actually a really good place to be right now."

Again, good answers. Ones he was expecting but they were serious ones he was hoping for. Kurt liked the touches to his shoulder because Sebastian was doing them on his own. Kurt didn't have to trick him into it give him a reason. But even though he said he hated Sebastian earlier he didn't mean it. He didn't hate him. Not even a little bit. How ridiculously hard he'd fallen for him was something he couldn't hide nor deny to himself anymore and it drove him crazy. "I don't hate you," he blurted and held his breath, reaching to catch Sebastian's hand just as he pulled hit away from his shoulder, his insides twisting when the other told him he'd missed him too. Sighing a bit obviously with relief, Kurt laced his fingers with Sebastian's. he lifted his eyes again to focus on his friend's face if he couldn't make eye contact. "I was worried," he spoke quietly. "I tried to say it was a fancy trip some place to make myself feel better but I had no idea. I'm sorry for being selfish but I couldn't help it. You were right about not owing me anything though," Kurt licked his lips, wondering if Sebastian had caught on yet that if you just told him the right things Kurt was easier to deal with. "I... You're not my... Boyfriendoranything," he said quickly because the words were strange on his lips. "I don't even know if you're my friend," he tried to offer a bit of a smile though he dreaded the possible truth of the statement. "But I missed you still. A lot."
There was the very obvious Sebastian-like answer he could give: everyone missed him, of course. But, while he was arrogant enough to believe it, that's not why he knew he was missed. "Only when you started throwing fruit at me did I really realize you missed me." He said with a shrug. "After all, you have to have someone you hate to adore. Why should it not be me?" He added, smirking. He knew that reply was likely to just anger Kurt, so he placed his hand on the other's shoulder again. "Besides, I might have missed you too."

He couldn't believe how quick Sebastian was with his responses. Not that Kurt wasn't that slick but Sebastian handicapped him. He was a weakness. And while the offer for money was sweet in its own way, he felt weird accepting it. He was awful at accepting 'gifts' and money and, well, everything. He could only think to distract Sebastian from the thought and cleared his throat. "How do you know I missed you?" He asked carefully, shifting to face him a little more. Biting his lower lip he tilted his head and tried to make eye contact.
"Because I am handsome and charming and I know you missed me." Sebastian at least hoped the last bit was true, even if he refused to admit missing him in return. He rolled his eyes, shaking his head. "I don't need to pay for sex. I'm not desperate. It was more like..." He didn't really have an explanation. It wasn't a loan, because he didn't really care if he got paid back. "Consider it a gift. For...helping me with the telekinesis thing a few months ago." Sebastian hadn't had a lot of time to work with that power, since he didn't want his father to be aware he possessed it, but he was better than before, certainly. "Besides, you've obviously gotten better with it...I haven't. You could keep helping me, and I'll help you. Its a win-win."

Kurt turned his head toward Sebastian and rolled his eyes. He couldn't help the small smile this time before pushing his fingers through his hair. He was tired of talking about light and dark and war and everything frustrating. He was calmer now and he just wanted to relax. "Please," Kurt licked his lips. "I think you just want to hear me say you're charming and handsome and that I missed you," he mumbled, his cheeks burning at the last part because he definitely knew it was true. It was all true.
"I could just as easily say I bet you're glad to be back. I don't know how you managed to survive so long without my sweetness and amazing ass," he tried to joke, knowing it was probably not true. "And how do you think you're going to help me with finances? I'm not going to have sex with you for money."
Sebastian nodded, listening to him. He let himself relax, leaning back against the couch and looking at him. "Sounds extremely boring. You must be glad I'm back to liven this place up. Hell, everyone must be." He teased, shrugging his shoulders slightly.
The mention of tests intrigued him, but he had a feeling he knew what that was about. "I'm sure they won't test me. I'm pretty sure the school is run by the light side of things. Why they even let me in, I haven't quite figured out. Money, I suppose, since they haven't tried to persuade me to join them." Sebastian knew it wasn't likely that they had anyone with the talent strong enough to persuade him, but he didn't know if Kurt knew that. "I could help you out with finances, you know."
He offered offhandidly.

Kurt's brow rose when Sebastian snapped.  He hadn't said anything about not liking him for who he was but it seemed as quickly as the statement was out he was trying to fix it.  With the hand on his shoulder, sending heat straight through his torso, he knew Sebastian knew he would have got up and left after that.
Relaxing into the couch a little more, he looked down at his own hands, trying to focus.  That was the first time they'd had physical contact aside from the jostle of their bump earlier when he'd left.  He craved more.
"I've been going to school," he said quietly.  It was what he'd gone there to do from the start, after all.  "I got a job because they revoked my scholarship.  Something about the tax money being diverted," he knitted his brow, realizing now it was probably for this war or the government. "If I don't pay my way they'll take my shitty little house," he shrugged and took a deep breath.  "I've just been trying to get better.  They started testing us differently.  Through simulations and stuff.  It's weird and it sucks the way they do it.  I always do well, though.  I mean, at least I score pretty high," Kurt leaned his head back against the cushions before thinking more about what he could talk about.
"I haven't heard from my since I came.  I send him letters but," he shrugged and left it at that.  "I got that shitty car and I've just been... going day to day.  Hanging out with Blaine and a few others every once in a while."
"I thought that I was. I've been surrounded by the worst sort of people lately. Sorry if I'm not being a sweetheart, but here I thought you liked me the way I am." Sebastian said, feeling bad about using what he'd admitted before against him. Sebastian reached over and put a hand on his shoulder, afraid that might cause him to leave. "Sorry, really. I've sort of forgotten how to shut off the whole persuasion thing lately, and it's a killer fucking migraine forcing myself not to use it on you. But I did remember my promise not to. So if I seem like more of an ass than normal, that's at least part of it." As soon as he'd gotten that explanation out, he dropped his hand from Kurt's shoulder, leaving it on the couch between them. "War is brutal, Kurt. It's definitely worse than everyone theorizes. So tell me what you've done around here, because its definitely better than what I've done."

This was one thing he did not miss about the other man.  He was so quick to make him feel pathetic.  A simple sentiment, trying to be nice and express feeling toward Sebastian was even impossible because all he got in return was... that.  When Sebastian continued to speak, Kurt shook his head, refusing to play his game.
"Why do you care?" he snapped.  Didn't Sebastian know by now if he was going to speak to him like he was an idiot he was only going to put his own wall up.  "You can't even talk to me like a normal human being," Kurt rolled his eyes and stared at the wall across from him.  They were going to get absolutely no where if they both kept this up.
They had worked through a lot before.  They were on a good path then, seemingly understanding one another more even if it was slow.  But they were making progress and even though Sebastian had made it clear at one point he didn't want anything serious with Kurt things were looking differently... at least, Kurt had thought so.  He wondered if all that was wasted now.  If Sebastian had gone back to his ways of partying, drinking, and fucking any boy who'd give him the night.
The problem he was facing now was that he didn't want to be angry anymore.  He didn't want to keep being defensive.  But he couldn't let Sebastian have his way either.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
“Not at first, I didn’t.  By the time I’d learned about it, I’d already caused too much to redeem myself for.”  Sebastian shrugged, looking away from him.  He almost scoffed, rolling his eyes.  ”Yeah, I’m fine.  Just freaking peachy.”  He muttered, leaning back against the couch.  He’d already given too much away.  He didn’t want to say anything else to make himself look weak.
“So other than being pissed at me, what have you done while I was gone?  Was it horribly depressing around here without me to be charming and handsome?” He asked, smirking a little.  It was more of placing his shield up again.  He did miss Kurt, but he wouldn’t admit it until the other one did, and even then he might not.

Kurt closed his eyes and took a deep breath.  Slowly he pushed a hand through his hair and felt his shoulders and lower back ache.  He wanted more than anything to close the space between them at the thought of Sebastian's father harming him but he didn't want to be rejected.
"I didn't say I thought you were capable of murder," he said slow, his voice low and his mouth going dry.  "I only asked if you knew about it," Kurt explained, an ache behind his eyes as he took another deep breath.  What did someone say after something like this? After a conversation like this? 'Welcome home' or 'I missed you'?
"I'm..." he started and paused, licking his lips.  "Aside from your ribs I'm glad you're okay," Kurt offered, knowing that he would have been much more distraught had he never known what happened to Sebastian than Sebastian disappearing and then returning out of the blue.  "I'm just glad you're okay."
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
“It’s kill or be killed in a war, Kurt.  If you think I wanted to be responsible for that, you can get the hell out of here now.”  Sebastian said, his voice sounding flat.  It wasn’t like he couldn’t exactly fight back if Kurt did get pissed right now.  Three months in the middle of a war had really taken their toll on him, and he wasn’t sure if he was happy to be back or not.  ”You think I could have refused them?  I wouldn’t be alive if I had.  My father…” He laughed bitterly, shaking his head.  ”He would have killed me without a moment’s notice.”
Sebastian looked over at him briefly.  He really wanted Kurt to believe him.  He was certainly feeling weaker than he had earlier when he saw Kurt, more like his emotional walls had broken down.  Kurt had been doing that to him before he’d gone, and now it seemed, he still managed to do so.  ”But if you really think I’m capable of murder, go ahead and go.”

Kurt wasn't sure if that was the end of Sebastian's explanation or not.  He wasn't sure if there was more to this story or if it was a quick one but his stomach twisted and he kept his eyes trained on the other.  Sebastian... helped kill people? He thought to himself, his face gone pale and his stomach rising some as he considered what he'd said.  "So, you persuaded people to switch sides and then they were killed?" Kurt asked slowly.  If Sebastian did this, maybe it wasn't such a good idea he was there.  Maybe he shouldn't have come after all.
Kurt opened his mouth then closed.  He repeated that action once more before looking away completely.  What had he been expecting? Sebastian to say he helped pick out uniforms and did laundry for the 'soldiers'? "You knew they were being killed but you did it anyway?"
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
Sebastian sat down next to him, keeping himself a couple of feet away from him.  Given that the other had had him pinned against a wall a few hours previous, he was giving him some distance.  He still wasn’t sure whether or not Kurt was pissed or if he’d ‘forgiven’ him, given his condition.  He felt better playing it safe for now.
“I was at the war.  Whether you ‘choose’ to be light or dark, you’re going to have to choose eventually, and I can’t tell you which side is winning.  I thought the dark was but then I came back like this.”  He started, shrugging his shoulders.  He wasn’t looking at him, preferring to look down at his hands.  ”I was meant to be persuading people in battle to switch sides.  But the dark side isn’t forgiving, so switching sides just made people become easier targets.” He said dryly.  He still felt guilty, horribly so, over the fact that he’d practically convinced these people to let themselves be killed.  It wasn’t something he’d ever considered an offensive power.  Now, he wasn’t so sure.

Looking up and instantly being greeted with a half naked, busted Sebastian made his heart both flutter and break.  He wanted to reach out and touch but knew better than to even try it.  "I'm full of surprises," he offered when Sebastian said he hadn't expected him to come.  He came in, however, and slipped his hoodie off of his arms and rested it in a chair before sitting on the couch.
Kurt took a deep breath.  He knew he didn't want to know but part of him told him he needed to.  Kurt looked up at Sebastian before nodding and taking a deep breath. "Yes, I do," his eyes were softer than they had been and but he wanted the other to realize he wasn't weak... why Kurt thought Sebastian thought that of him he wasn't sure.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
sebastian hadn’t stayed staring at his chest long, but he didn’t bother putting a shirt on.  Bruises were just bruises, and he didn’t really expect Kurt to show up if he hadn’t already.  Besides, it wasn’t like the other boy hadn’t seen him shirtless by now.  He laid down on his couch, not feeling up to leaving to go to bed yet, even if he was spending most of the time almost asleep.  It wasn’t until there was a knock on the door that he came out of his daze.
Sebastian sighed and got up, opening the door.  ”I didn’t think you’d actually show up.  Come on in.  It’s pretty hot out there.”  He said, stepping aside to let Kurt pass by, shutting the door once he was inside.  ”So did you really want to know what I’ve been up to?”

Kurt acted like he hadn't heard him.  He kept walking, eyes on the ground.  Once in his car he sat for only a second because he didn't want to hang around longer than necessary.  Once he pulled out of the parking lot he drove his normal path home.  had he really meant it when he said he wasn't as nice as Sebastian thought?  Would he really get wrapped up in a war he didn't want to fight? With a quiet sigh he sat in his car, still and silent once he was parked outside of his home.  It looked the exact same as it did the last time Sebastian had been over.
Not bothering to get out or to shower or do anything he might have normally done once he set a routine for himself.  Instead he took the familiar route to Sebastian's house.  He still knew it because he may or may not have drove past his home more than once every couple of weeks.  The windows were always black, his yard was always trimmed, his presence still absent.  This time it was weird to see it different.  It wasn't abandoned anymore and the glow from one of the windows let him know Sebastian was home.
Once he'd climbed out of his car he shifted slowly toward the door, checking the time on his phone to make sure he didn't appear too desperate   It'd been about an hour and half since he'd seen him last... that wasn't too bad.  Lifting his hand he knocked on the door before ringing the bell, chewing his lower lip as his shoulder muscles tightened and his chest felt heavy.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
Sebastian rolled his eyes.  ”Sure you aren’t.” He mumbled as Kurt walked away.  He grabbed his bag, and called after him: “If you’re actually curious about what happened, come to my place tonight.”  He knew that wasn’t enough to bait him, but Sebastian wanted to talk to him more than they had.  And he wanted it to be civil.  ”Otherwise, I’ll just leave my poor ribs under my care.  Chances are, I’ll just get hurt more than I already am, you know.”  He added, smirking slightly as he headed towards his car.
Sebastian didn’t even bother waiting for a reply.  He didn’t know if Kurt would follow him or not, but he was at least slightly hopeful.  He parked in front of his place and headed inside, putting the food away.  He walked into the bathroom, taking his shirt off and looking at his chest in the mirror.

He wasn't sure why Sebastian made him so angry.  The things he were saying weren't necessarily wrong but how could the be right?  How would Sebastian know what he'd do anyway?  They'd had sex, not exchanged life stories.  He didn't doubt that if this war was as bad as he said that it would at some point reach the compound.  He shook his head though before lifting his eyes back up to him.  "Maybe I'm not as good as you think I am," he mumbled, tired of this.  Tired of this conversation and feeling like he was going to explode because his body didn't know what to feel at all.
Moving closer, he leaned forward and picked up Sebastian's bag, making sure everything was in it before handing it to him.  "Here," he mumbled.  "Go get your ribs checked," he added before pulling his hoodie around him tighter and beginning to walk toward his piece of shit car.  It was an item he'd bought himself in the past few months.  He realized quickly his feet weren't going to take him everywhere and though it was basically a hunk of metal it got him from point a to point b.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
“But here’s the real question.  If given a choice, where would you go?  Because, let’s face it, either side is full of themselves.  No one has a choice anymore.  I certainly don’t, and you don’t either.”  Sebastian said, shrugging his shoulders.  ”I’d see you fighting against me than with me first though.  You’re a good person, they tend to stick with the side that pretends it’s also good.  But no one is inherently good, or inherently evil.  A labels a label.  But you’d fight with them if you had to, I’m almost sure of it.”
Sebastian stood up straight, shaking his head slightly.  ”And you should be prepared for it.  It’s not like the whole war is going to end tomorrow.  Someone will probably drag you into it too.  But that person sure as hell won’t be me.”  He admitted, looking over at him.  ”You are right about one thing: no one is innocent anymore.”

Kurt took it all in. It wasn't what he was expecting to hear in the least but he knew it was the truth. Sebastian wasn't a liar and though he didn't always like hearing what he had to say he knew it made a little stronger in one way or another. He let his head tilt downward now, feeling even more like an asshole as Sebastian made the idea of an email or something seem so stupid. Because it was, in this case. Kurt knew it'd been selfish but he didn't understand himself half the time let alone what he was feeling.
"I never said anyone was innocent," he said quickly, brow knitting as Sebastian attempted to cluster him with a particular side. "I'm not friends with anyone. I was labeled," Kurt couldn't help but feel defensive as he swallowed and took a step back. "Do you see me walking around wearing light on my chest like a hero or something? I'm nothing as far as I'm concerned. I'm me, I'm Kurt. I don't... I don't shit rainbows and wish for world peace. Someone looked at me and wrote it down on a clipboard," he shook his head. "Don't identify me as someone who'd do that to you," he clenched his jaw and rubbed the back of his neck.
He knew Sebastian was going to make him feel like an idiot for taking what he said so seriously. For lighting up like fire to a match. He couldn't help it though. He was so used to defending himself it sort of just came out.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
“Whatever my father forced me to do.”  Sebastian said bitterly.  He didn’t care about the war, thinking the whole fight was stupid.  His ‘allegiance’ was with the dark, but he didn’t care either way.  ”That’s why there’s been no contact from me. I’ve been in the middle of a war.  You think I had time to email you?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“So doctor, how’s it look?” He asked, keeping the smirk on his face.  He was teasing, slightly, but given that Kurt had wanted to see, he wanted to know how bad it looked.  ”It happened the day before yesterday, as I was coming back.  If you really think your friends on the light are as innocent as the light suggests, you’re wrong.”

Kurt had always thought the 'war' was some sort of myth. That it wasn't a true war, just a play on words maybe. He didn't say that out loud, actually fearing the verbal attacks he may get from the man in front of him. The first thing he learned about Sebastian was how unafraid he was to speak his mind. But if he was at war then it only made sense with who. And if this sort of thing was happening and Sebastian was dark and he himself was light...
Kurt swallowed hard, wondering what Sebastian had done to other lights. "What were you doing in the war?" He asked, his voice low as he gently released the fabric of sebastians shirt. He so badly wanted to touch and be close but now he wondered if he needed to worry. If he needed to be aware and he hoped his eyes didn't receal these sudden thoughts.
This Way Comes | Kurtbastian
“What do you think I was doing?  I was at the war.  Fun, right?”  Sebastian replied, rolling his eyes.  Sebastian dropped his arms to his sides, basically giving Kurt permission to look.  He didn’t exactly care, and he was too sore to protest.  ”Not really.  It happened when I was coming back here.  I did what I was needed for and left.  It just took a while.”  He admitted, although he wouldn’t be able to say what he’d done without putting Kurt in danger.
“I’d assume they’re fractured.  Maybe broken.  Maybe just bruised.”  Sebastian shrugged very slightly.  He sighed softly, shaking his head.  ”You know, you can still  be pissed off at me.  I sort of led you on and then vanished.  If I gave a shit about me, which I don’t, I’d have been pissed too.  Quit being so concerned.  You should still be hacked off.”
