Sometimes I think about how Midoriya Izuku was probably not intentionally written to be in love with Bakugou Katsuki, and how the majority of the show’s intended audience doesn’t see him that way and I just… I gotta say, I would be bored* if I read Izuku as straight.
Character relationships, platonic or romantic, are what draw me to a story. “Saving the world,” yeah yeah sure, but, “saving our severed bond” is more relatable and compelling to me personally, so character relationship arcs are the ones I focus on.
Bakugou Katsuki and Midoriya Izuku’s relationship is the most important relationship in the show/manga, no matter how you look at it. And if not for love, for what? I’m not saying friendship cannot be intense, powerful, and worthy of being the central relationship of a show/manga, but is this friendship? Are Katsuki and Izuku best friends? Decidedly no. But are they The Most important person to each other? Yes. Canonically, yes.
So, what is that? Is it a platonic soulmate bond between two people meant to be hero partners? Is it “just what happens when you’ve known someone since you were 3”? For those who aren’t seeing love, what are you seeing?
In conclusion, I know the fruitiness is almost certainly not intentional, but boy does it raise the stakes and make the story more interesting.
* “Bored” is a slight exaggeration. I do like the show for more than bkdk’s dynamic.
