rivendell, in my mind, was a really great place for an emergency stronghold — naturally protected, abundant water, etc. — and yet actually kind of an illogical fit for long-term inhabitation. every day is a struggle against gravity. every structural feature is symbiotic with an ecosystem of lichen feeding on the tiny waterfalls running under literally everything. there is a LOT of interesting mold. and mushrooms. fungi genomes mutating constantly on the unparalleled dampness and lowkey eldritch divinity holding the place together like so much mystical duct tape. mycotherapy breakthroughs on the regular. yeah yeah the hands of the king the hands of the healer but consider that elrond is the president of a wet vertiginous crag full of weird spores who has 5000 years to do clinical trials, THAT'S why he's so good at medicine.

Oh your ideas about spiritual and ego death aspects of elven refractory period are very interesting, and in context of fic, makes me wonder, how does it work in orgy or gangbang or threesome? What are effects of having sex with several partners at once, and how does it look to people from outside, when viewing elf's soul or mind?

(Also, if there is extreme sport tantric sex among elves, or any form of sexology research or competitive eroticism art, the undisputed master of it who pushed all bounds is in my mind definitely Nerdanel.)

Funny yet serious answer: Feanor and Nerdanel were 100% champs at fucking. Feanor almost certainly made a competitive sport of it (gotta be the best at fucking ever). Nerdanel was possibly more interested in the philosophical/spiritual aspects. Either way, I know in my heart of hearts, that they definitely wrote a slightly unhinged dissertation about it and this is why all their sons are either single or divorced and only one of them ever came up to scratch enough to have a child. Something something that one quote in the Tragedy of Heterosexuality about how the child sees the tragedy of their parents and decides they're going to skip that mess.

ACTUAL serious answer:

I have been thinking about this lately because the premise of the fic I'm currently working on is "do you achieve elf ego death by having sex with more partners (e.g. an orgy/gangbang) or by having sex for a really long time" and ofc if you do, which one is qualitatively better. My thoughts so far:

If you're married and you have sex with several people, you can actually get away with seeming like you haven't been changed because you're already married. You already have the Good Sex Body Horror Transformation TM

Valinor probably has a thriving swingers'/open marriage scene as a result of this

What Actually Happens At A Gangbang:

Any transformation or experience of spiritual transformation or ego death entirely hinges on how many times a gangbangee experiences the transcendence of total loss, which we can assume can only really come with the loss of control that comes with orgasm

So presumably, to achieve maximum transformation, your gangbang would have to be (and I feel some kind of way typing these words out) extremely high quality

I think also the transformation would depend on whether the gangbangee is acting as purely a passive receptacle, or if is going for most fucks achieved - so, level of agency

IF a gangbangee is serving as a passive receptacle, I think they'd experience the transformation of having a spirit pressed into theirs, which is maybe more comparable to the Barthesian Pleasure of the Text, which is a pleasure that can be repeated infinitely because you can live and die in the pleasure of psychological loss that comes from being lost in someone's life without necessarily expending your own, infinitely until you incrementally reach ego death

IF a gangbangee is playing an active role, however, you are possibly more likely to reach ego death much quicker, from the process of losing yourself, gaining someone else, losing yourself, gaining someone else being more intense and requiring uh more expense of essence (which is not the same as cum, unlike in er other philosophical conceptualisations of little death)

WHO IS HAVING A BETTER TIME: I personally think the passive gangbangee is most likely having the blissful acid style ego death, whereas the active gangbangee is more likely to have an ego death experience that could go fifty-fifty between extremely good (extremely great partners, everyone having a great and blissful time) and extremely bad (overstimulation shutdown town)

However in a threesome that is not of equals, i.e. its a V-shaped threesome (you know, like the Y Tu Mama Tambien threesome), I think this is most likely to feel like regular sex, but for the two who are really into each other, the experience is really intense and possibly ego death and transformative but less in a trippy way and more in a harrowing Freudian insight into the depths of your unconscious kind of way.

I've been thinking about this for a hot sec and I don't think there's anyone better than you to ask about this: I've seen a lot of concersation around Eärendil wanting to choose the fate of Men but choosing to be counted among the Eldar for Elwing's Sake but surprisingly little on what caused her decision in the first place. Do you have any thoughts/headcanons on her choice?

First of all thank you so much, that’s so kind of you to think of me 🥹

I think Elwing is obviously somebody who went through an insane amount of trauma, but she’s also a very determined person and deep down she has an optimistic streak that just can’t be broken. Despite everything she goes through, she builds a life and a home and a community in Sirion, and even after the third kinslaying causes her to attempt suicide she keeps going afterwards - she flies onwards to Earendil and then insists on following him off the ship and onto Aman.

So with that in mind, I think Elwing chooses immortality because she still has that stubborn streak of hope. Earendil feels weary of the world, but she loved the little corner of the world that she carved out too much to leave the whole world behind, even if the havens of Sirion themselves are destroyed forever. And with immortality there’s the chance that over the many many thousands of years she’ll be able to find some healing and peace, even if it’s so far out of reach right now that it feels almost impossible. This woman is STUBBORN . And finally of course, with the Choice being granted to her descendants, choosing immortality makes it possible that she’ll be able to reunite with them within the circles of the world should they make the same choice, whereas it’s much more nebulous if they’ll meet again should they all choose to die a mortal death, and she’d be sundered from them forever if she chose mortality and her sons didn’t.

I think at this point I can admit a certain fondness for media rest dialogue or short first lines. I am very fond of reading beginnings that carry a specific tone and stick with it, and it's something that is so much fun to try to achieve too. But the weakness for longer sentences peeks through. These always feel like more of a gamble, since I'm never sure if they work as hooks with the same efficiency, but I love how a semicolon can serve to create a bit of a two-step rhythm for scene-setting too much to abdicate them.
