I get the impression that a lot of people outside of my friend groups are not really engaging with the trolley problem much at all, to a degree that makes them sound unwilling to consider any non-ideal trade-offs.
But like... the way I think about it is about the same way I think about vaccines.
Vaccines generally cause mild pain in the short term, and there is a tiny minority that will have more serious adverse effects. This is extremely uncommon, and there are ways to mitigate the risk (such as waiting for a bit before leaving the vaccination site in case there's an allergic reaction) but it still ends up taking the rough form of a similar trade-off where a small number might die but vaccinating people is still much better than the alternative where even more people die.
Vaccines are kind of an overwhelmingly one-sided trade in this regard. The numbers are not even close.
But the principle is the same. Taking actions that will reduce suffering and death on the net is a good thing even if there is a cost to those actions.
It's good to try to reduce or cheat that cost, but if you feel sufficiently guilty about the cost being there that you'd rather do nothing you may come off like you care more about not feeling bad than about doing good. It's dangerous to link doing the right thing to your feelings given that doing the wrong thing can feel more comfortable or emotionally satisfying for a lot of relatively common types of people.
Do you think the difficulty in describing smells is something inherent to the sense of smell or do we just lack a good vocabulary for smells, since they're hot considered as important as sight or sound?
"well if it's not androgynous what should a nonbinary person look like??" ***EXTREMELY LOUD BUZZER SOUND*** WRONG!!!! YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG!!!!!!! NOBODY "SHOULD" ANYTHING!!!! THAT IS NOT WHAT QUEERNESS IS ABOUT!!!!! GO TO THE CALM DOWN CORNER AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE JUST SAID.
Dating is easy af tbh. First, you make a great number of deranged and vividly insane personal posts on tumblr until someone dms you. Then you marry them.
