Button
âItâs so cheesy,â you complain.
âI think itâs romantic,â Mizuiro comments from behind his phone. âNot that Iâll be doing it.â
âYou guys are so lame! Itâs tradition,â Keigo complains.
âLike youâll have someone to give it to, Asano-kun,â Mizuiro states bluntly.
âOr someone who will accept it,â Ishida adds as he sews.
âEt, tu?â Keio cries!
Chad grunts, and you snort a laugh.
âYou guys are so mean!â
You roll your eyes.
âWhatever. Besides, why would you want to give your button to someone anyways?â
âBecause itâs what your supposed to do when you graduate! You give the second button of your uniform to someone who means the most to you. Itâs part of the whole graduation ceremony!â
You sigh.
âSounds like a nuisance.â
âThatâs a big word for you,â Tatsuki comments as she and Inoue walk toward them. You sit a bit straighter at the sight of them.
âOh, shut it.â
They both take a seat next to Chad.
âIs there something thatâs bothering you, Kurosaki-kun?â
Before you can deny it, Keigo jumps in.
âYeah! He thinks the button tradition is dumb.â
âOh?â She tilts her head in confusion. âI think itâs sweet.â
âYouâre right, Inoue-san! Itâs a heartfelt tradition that shouldnât be ignored,â Keigo agrees.
She nods as she looks down at her food.
For some reason, you feel like youâve let her down. As sheâs the last person you want to disappoint.
âWell, you shouldnât worry, Orihime. Youâll get a lot of buttons,â Tatsuki announces. You frown at her words.
âI mean, just think about how many confessions youâve gotten so far,â Tatsuki continues. Inoue glances up with a blush on her face.
You scowl at your old friendâs words.
âItâsâŠitâs not like that, Tatsuki-chan!â
âIf I had a dollar for how many guys asked her out, Iâd be rich,â Tatsuki jokes. She looks at you. You nearly growl at her.
âAny-anyways! Did you guys hear about Sensei Ochi transferring?â Inoue asks, very obviously trying to change the subject.
You lean back at glare at the glaring sun.
Whatâs so special about a button? Itâs just a dumb button!
But what bothered you the most is thatâŠdid she want a button?
When the bell rings, you catch her eye, silently telling her to wait. She fumbles with her bag, advising Tatsuki to leave first since she forgot to call her boss about something. Itâs a lie. A very obvious one, but Tatsuki leaves as does everyone else until itâs just you and her.
She straightens up and gives you a look of concern.
âIs there something wrong?â
You look at her.
Graduation is nearly there, and youâve been doing everything in your powers to be around her. Youâve been using every excuse you could think of to be closer to her. Youâve asked for help with studying for entrance exams, youâve asked her to help with your resume, hell, youâve asked her for baking lessons! Youâve invited her to every gathering your other friends had, invited to her to your sisterâs events. Youâve done everything to avoid losing her.
And not once, not once, did she ever notice what youâve been doing. Not once did she see how desperate youâve become to remain byw her side.
You look at her.
When did she become so important to you? When did she become someone that you like to someone that you love? When did it happen?
âKurosaki-kun?â
You sigh.
You really didnât plan for it. You were always going to hide your feelings from her. Being her friend was infinitely better than being her nothing. You were never going to confess, but the thought that she would be getting all of those buttons drove you crazy. Crazy because you could, with no doubt in your mind, guarantee that you would be the only one out of her admires to wholeheartedly mean your confession. Because to you, sheâs the most important person to you.
With that in mind, your fingers find the second button of your jacket, and you rip it. You see her eyes widen. Widen even more as you step closer to her.
âHold out your hand.â
She listens, and you place the button in her outstretched hand.
âItâs a cheesy, dumb, nuisance of a tradition,â you admit. You can see her about to pout. âBut it doesnât mean that I donât believe in it. In fact, youâre the only person Iâd give this to. The only one.â
She blushes as she stares in your eyes.
âReally?â
You smile as you nod.
She holds the button out, appraising it with a huge grin before turning towards you.
âAnd youâre the only person I want to receive it from. The only one.â
You feel the heat rush to your cheeks as you rub your neck.
âReally?
She smiles as she nods.
âOf course! Youâre my most beloved person!â
