around stellarlune and after it I stopped liking Sophie, mostly due to myself being in a bad best friendship with someone who shared similar traits with Sophie. I guess I connected the two in my brain and stopped liking Sophie’s narrative because she reminded me of them. however being back on tumblr has made me love Sophie again and I’m so grateful because now I won’t feel so estranged while reading the kotlc books!

My humble response:

No, our Lord Hunkyhair is not looking especially hunky on the new cover. He's not bad, but he just looks a little wrong.

Yes, I am somewhat bothered that our Fearless Miss F is not on the cover. KOTLC has been hijacked by a side character, and as much as we all love Keefe, he's stealing the show by now. Hogging the narrative rather than haunting it.

Yes, the new cover is absolutely a different feel from all the others. Again, not bad, but it does make it feel all the more like we're branching off into a different story. That being said, it's kinda cool to have a different mood to the new cover art because it's set in the human world and therefore of course the vibes would be different. (However, the Legacy cover is also capturing a moment from the human world, with Big Ben in the background and all, and yet it still has that fantasy feel.)

Yes, unfortunately our boy *could* look more awesome. No disrespect to the artist, but this time Keefe just doesn't quite look like the Keefe in the other cover illustrations.

I am liking the plain, ordinary, simpler feel of the setting depicted in the new illustration since it's the Forbidden Cities and not sparkly elf town, as Ro would say. And I am liking the ominous looking hoodie guy looming in the background, and the way he seems to be aware of Keefe while Keefe is maybe not aware of him. I do think this is possibly a critical part of the story somehow.

But I'm still not crazy about how the whole cover is so Keefe-centric and the one and only Moonlark is nowhere to be seen. It's just a little sad to me, and I see it as an indication of how the focus of the plot has shifted from where it started. I'd be fine with having a Keefe short story or a Keefe side story, but he needs to quit hogging that narrative.

ironic that all i want is more depth in sophie’s character

ok so it’s not like the fact that Keefe is treated as the protagonist of kotlc isn’t already widely talked about but ummmm I wanted to talk about it to so yeah. The main thing that I want to talk about in this post is the fact that keefe’s mental health is probably the worst we’ve seen in the series. He has suicidal thoughts tendencies that indicate self harm and a bucket load of inferiority complex’s trauma anxiety and mental breakdowns. It’s not that this isn’t realistic because quite frankly he’s had a horrible childhood. But here’s the thing. So has Sophie and yet, while there are obvious signs of anxiety from Sophie as well as times were she literally just doesn’t move for l several days which sounds a lot like severe depression her issues have never been addressed in same way Keefe’s have. No ones ever talked through it with her not the way she talked to Keefe about his mental health or parents or general unbelievable amount of trauma. And why is that? Because Sophie is the only person in this series with fix him syndrome. Honestly I have no idea. Apparently no one else in this series is able to give motivational speeches. And I mean she does get support but it doesn’t feel the same as the scenes where she comforts Keefe. And no I’m not passive aggressively shitting on Keefe for not supporting Sophie because he does but. It just doesn’t feel like he’s working her through it. More so like he’s just supporting her, which is good like he’s her friend not her therapist but it results in Keefe’s problems being talked through more than the literal MAIN CHARACTER. Look ok I get Keefe is the main love interest I can accept him being more explored as a character than the others but more than Sophie? That’s some bullshit right there.
