The A ending of Fear &Hunger is devastating to me. Spoilers for Fear &Hunger in this post.

The God of Fear & Hunger is both a glorious success and a terrible failure. She is the answer to the prayers of the people, a god that understands humans and helps them shape the world to suit them. She drives industry, inspires technology, and ends the stagnation of mankind under the Old Gods.

But she is the God of Fear and Hunger. She is a whip to a donkey, spurs to a horse. She understands mankind, but no longer holds any compassion for them. She drives us forward, but that is because she is what we run from.

Nilvan hoped she would be an answer, and though she was, she was not a guiding light, but an omnipresent, swallowing darkness.

I climbed through the guts of a dead God and I stood on a mountain of corpses.

I was spoiled myself. I knew as purple grass turned to a mound of dead that this place would be where I say goodbye.

I baked cakes, whipped up some mushroom stew, and had a feast of food and wine right there, at the end of the world. I entreated her to the last taste she would ever know, the last thing she would ever drink.

I handed her a doll, and a silent goodbye.

Then we stepped over to the edge, and she became something new.

I knew it was coming. I saw the spoilers. I saw each and every form of her metamorphosis on the wiki and the list of her attacks.

Even though I knew it was meaningless, I kept mashing the talk action in my spare turns, attempting to convey words that could not be answered.

And then I was acknowledged, and I curled up and died at her feet. The final mercy of the human that was, and the first act of that God that will be.

Damn, I beat myself up for that ending too much. It's knowing that this isn't going to be a happy ending and trying to get it anyway. It wasn't even the first ending I got. I did the C ending before it, and in that timeline, I assume that Cahara took the Girl home with him, sold the trinkets and books he collected to collectors, and then eked out a humble existence with Celeste, the Girl, and Moonless while Le'garde conquered the world around them.

I didn't have to go back. But I did. And despite knowing I wasn't going to be rewarded for it, I cut the three hearts and entered the gauntlet.

Damn, what an ending. The game isn't easy to play. It's quite graphic and disturbing, so it's not for everyone. It's somewhat randomized and has emergent gameplay and the game at times is genuinely hostile to the idea it's being played. Infection will kill you. Bones will break. The blood won't stop, and the poison will rot your flesh from your bones. Fires burn, you can get your limbs cut off or go blind. And to top it all off, you can get stomach worms.

Perhaps it's catharsis, besting it. But I still can't help but feel bad for the girl, never once knowing ease. She was, is, now and forever, fear and hunger.

Hey guys, now Karin Sauer received her own fanart with Moonscorched form! She discribes herself as a valkyrie that immortalized the fallen by telling their stories. What a dark and amazing concept! I chose to adjusted her design a bit and removed the Bellends on her back. I believe that the flesh-piercing spears and the Warrior runes are sufficient to convey the message of the original design.
