All You Want to Know About The Kandy Esala Perahera – Sri Lanka
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the oldest and grandest Buddhist festivals in the world. The Temple of Tooth, which is known as the house of Lord Buddha’s tooth relic, is considered the living Buddha in Sri Lanka and the entire world. There are rituals happening in the Temple of Tooth every day of the year. However, the Esela Perehara that takes place in the month of July is something out of the ordinary, and it is a must-see event in Sri Lanka for visitors. Today’s report is all about the grandest procession of Sri Lanka, the Kandy Esela Perahera.
The History of Kandy Esela Perahera and the Sacred Tooth Relic
As said, the history of Esela perahera (Dalada perahera) runs back thousands of years. Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala from ancient India (The Kingdom of Kalinga) brought the left canine of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka in 328A.D to protect it from conflicts. Initially, the tooth relic was kept in Anuradhapura (Isurumuniya Temple). King Kithsirimewan inaugurated the Dalada Perahera is an annual event with the anticipation of rain and harvest for the people in the country.
The interesting tale of Sri Lankan history is that the king who comes to power had to obtain the tooth relic from the previous reign and be the guardian of it in order to consider as the official king of the country. This meant the sacred tooth relic was relocated from one place to another due to the kingdom change. Starting from Anuradhapura, nine kingdoms in Sri Lanka had the virtue of holding the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, and Kandy is the last of them.
Also, it must be mentioned that the tooth relic’s route from Anuradhapura to Kandy was not a smooth one. Also, it’s not only Kings who had the ownership of this precious and sacred icon throughout history. Although King Wimaladharmasooriya became to the power of Kingdom Kandy, he didn’t have the guardianship of tooth relic. Due to this, people were not ready to accept him as the king. After plenteous struggles, he was succeeded in bringing it Kandy with the help of Dewanagala Rathnalankara Thero and kept the relic in the Gedige temple in Kandy.
Then, a grand temple was built near the king’s palace, and it is the current Temple of the Tooth relic in Kandy. Since the English got into the power of Kingdom Kandy in 1815, the Buddhist clergies had the custody of tooth relic and a new post created as Diyawadana Nilame as the guardian. Nowadays, an appointed Diyawadana Nilame does all the duties of the Temple of tooth relic, including the annual Kandy Esela perahera.
