It was only a few days later that the pair took a jet and left Wakanda. T’Challa opened them back whenever they wished, giving them plenty of supplies in case their new home lacked it. Several hours it took, until they flew over the vast property. Tony had assisted pushing the legal papers through and Phil set the jet down in a more open green field. There were barns, pens, rolling hills, and of course that enormous house. Hell it was more like an old mansion. “ If this ain’t the place to start again I don’t know what would be. “ He opened the flight deck, moving on outside to get a breath. “ Cleanestair I’ve ever inhaled.. and it’s all yours, honey. “
What was it like to be obliterated with a single snap of fingers? At the moment it happened in Wakanda, he had been fighting Thanos with Steve and the rest. Phil had died already, brought back in the most painful and torturous way anyone could possibly imagine. He was dead for nearly a week, had his skull opened and layered, but was awake and begging to die. After being infused with Kree blood he nearly lost his mind, but he overcame that and was ready to live. But at the point of the snap, he had simply stared at Steve, muttered only his name. At first he couldn’t feel his legs, his entire body went numb. Then they simply turned to a fine ash, his Chitauri modified weaponry having fallen to the ground, along with the genetically coded hand. Phil had died a second death, which looked more brutal than the first.
Coming back had been more simple. He was simply willed into existence, and once they all figured out what was going on, those who had been left in Wakanda, Strange and others made an appearance. There wasn’t any time to process it. He had only attached his hand and plucked up his weapon. Five years for everyone else had been an instant and he was thrown back into fighting reality as they knew it, something far worse than just merely half of everyone gone.
When it looked like Steve was on his very last legs of the fight, it was Phil who spoke into the earpiece. He didn’t state on your left, anything of the kind. Just simply said his name. “ Steve? “ — and then. “ You’re not alone. “ He was the first to step through as every portal opened up, charging the Chitauri weapon on his hip. He ran out onto the field, his face still smeared with blood as before, that suit ripped up, the tie completely gone. He’d never glimpsed a more frightening sight in his life, staring down Thanos and an entire universal army, but he came out all the same, walking proudly as if he’d never died for a second time, ready to face a third death.
“ Looks like you could use some back up. “ A simple twist of his hand brought the holographic blue shield out to into the fray, followed by every other portal opening, every single person who could possibly fight or had the courage to face down Thanos and an alien army, making their way on the field.

“ As soon as you’re ready really. Now that you’ve recovered well enough we can fly out and get a look at our new home. “ Phil purred quite a bit at that gentle touch. “ I managed to get a lot of major work done while being here. You know how I am. But as soon as you’re ready, we can take our leave and start our family. “

Phil warmed at the sentiment of it. “ I’m fond of daffodils. When I was younger they would like to come in early at the first sign of warning weather only to be taken out by frost. But they always made a comeback. There are over 500 different types of daffodils, actually. I’ve always wanted my own garden filled with all the different types. “ He admitted easily, beneath the table he gently rubbed his foot against his leg. “ We’ll have quite the work ahead but it will be nice being able to just relax with you. “

Phil smiled, continuing to eat lunch. There was a future for the two of them. After everything that had happened, it made him want to retire from SHIELD, but that wasn’t an option. Not now with the world returning after five years. Things were chaotic. “ Maybe gardening could add on to your artistry. I know it can be calming. Say, what’s your favorite flower? “

Phil chuckled a bit at that. “ I think we can manage a dog and a few animals. We can figure that out once we see the entire layout. From what I saw the land is extremely fertile. Practically anything can grow there. Wouldn’t mind laying down some fruit and vegetables either. “ He ate more, looking around. “ I’m going to miss this place but it’s time for us to have a home we can call all our own. “

“ Do you think I like it either? But I’m not the United States government. It was the only compromise they were willing to make. You know how they can be. We were chased down like fugitives from the law for years because of those accords. Brainwashed or not, they see Bucky as a weapon and not a person. Just as they see you, and how they sawDoctor Banner. “
He sighed regretfully, picking up some of his lamb with the bread provided, taking a bite. “ I’m honestly glad we are going to Ireland. Just to get away from the chaos will be a change of pace for sure, let alone the bureaucratic bullshit of the US. “ Phil was also now on the enhanced list, the director of the agency that had it due to what Fury had done to him. In many ways he counted himself lucky he didn’t have inhuman DNA. So much worse could have happened.

“ Well it’s non negotiable. I had to move heaven and Earth just so the government would let him step foot in the country again and not be thrown in prison. I hate that it was looked so down upon back then, but he really does need to talk to a professional outside of the situation. And he can talk to Sam. At least with Sam he has a kinship of being in war zones and the trauma from it. “
He stopped talking as a woman came out of the shop and explained what she had on the menu. Phil settled for some sort of lamb dish with vegetables. He thanked her, letting Steve get whatever he was keen on eating.

Wakanda had been a place so few had ever visited and it had stayed off SHIELD’s radar for the most point. It truly was the most magnificent city, the two white men obviously being the stand out in this society. But both men had fought to protect Wakanda, and both men had been in the fight to bring the universe back to being. Instead of judgement of strange white men invading their space, there was more of an acceptance. A few people even acknowledging Steve for his courageous fight, but not Phil. He was used to that.
Knowing Steve was still healing, he picked out a small cafe that was shielded from the sun, moving to pull out a chair for Steve and choosing to sit himself. He looked around while they waited for the owner to come out, looking around with a little smile. “ I sure am going to miss this place. It’s beautiful here, truly. T’Challa said we were welcome here at any time, and Shuri has a keen interest in providing SHIELD with more technology. They trust us. “ He smiled a little. “ And I talked to Bucky, which was some news. I managed to get his citizenship back into the country if he wanted it, but with expectations like therapy which he wasn’t happy about. God knows we all need our fair share with what we’ve been through. Sam’s happy though. He can finally go home and see his sister and family. Bucky could use a good dose of unconditional love. “

Phil nodded and smiled a little, taking his hand back. It was a good thing he didn’t since, Phil now beaming proudly at the other’s approval. If he had known it was too much he would have told Steve to say something, but for now he was sublimely clueless.
There was obviously a deep love language there in touch.
“ Sure. If you get tired and need to come back, we’ll come back. Just tell me, okay? I don’t need you stressing your body out. “ He gave him a soft but adoring little kiss. Strange, how events could turn the tide when it came to love. All of those things he’d held back for years had so easily poured out of him.
“ Come on. “ He offered his hand with a smile, heading out.

Phil smiled a little at the kiss. He had mended rather nicely, still sore here and there but it wasn’t like the pain from before, the days of being in a coma. “ Sounds perfect. We can either go ask for some food or if you’d like.. we could go into the city and get something. Either way is good for me, I just need to know what you’re comfortable with. “
He stood up slowly but then remembered. “ Oh! I almost forgot. Shuri updated the tech in my hand. And I have actual sensation in the fingers again. “ He moved it a little with a smile, reaching up to carefully touch h his face, his fingers feeling much more fleshly and warm from before. “ No more chilled hand, either.. neat, huh? “

“ Of course there’s gonna be bad days. “ He closed his eyes happily when he felt the hand at the back of his head. “ But there’s been nothing but bad days for you for five lonely years. “ He opened his eyes, lifting his chin to set it on his stomach.
“ You always had me, you know? Apparently I just don’t take dying from bullies too well. “ He recrafted one of Steve’s phrases. “ But I was with you. Even when you had to move forward, I was still there with you. There’s nothing you can do to make me stop caring about you. I’ve been in love with the idea of you.. and then, you that I came to know for years. I should have said something, told you I loved you. Maybe it would have helped. But I’m here now, and you’re stuck putting up with me. “

“ You know better than anyone what a normal day for me is like. I never get a day that isn’t filled with chaos. That, and on two days an untimely death. “ Phil said it so matter of fact like it was nothing. But when the Kree blood came in him he’d nearly lost his mental stability and grasp on life. Steve had still been there, on and off working as a team.
“ I know you’re probably sick of everyone asking, but are you doing better today? I didn’t get the chance to ask you yet. “ He fell to sit on a chair, sitting the folder down and looking up at him. He curled his arms around his legs and set his head softly against his stomach. “ I just want you to be all right. “

“ Just been getting some work done. Managed to talk a rogue government down at around dawn, so my day has been busy. “ Yes, Coulson could talk like getting an entire government to lay down weapons and get with the program successfully was ab every day thing. Bureaucracy was something he was extraordinarily skilled at, and he was Fury’s protege.
“ Sorry I missed breakfast. But I’m here for lunch and you’ve got me for the rest of the day. Shuri was just updating me on the status of a few things. Good to see you and Stark getting along again.

“ Getting achy by fatherhood already? “ Phil clicked his teeth a bit as he’d only caught the tail end of the conversation, smirking a bit and moving into the apartment. He didn’t even think about it, he just went up to Steve and kissed his scarring cheek. He wasn’t going to lose anymore time. He had two deaths to make up for. Taking the folder from him, he looked through some of the documentation.
Tony blinked a bit. That was pretty brazen, not so much like Phil. Huh. “ Not achy. But you trying keeping a five year old out of my stuff. She’s the best thing to ever happen to me. .. and I see you’re extremely happy. “
“ It’s a good time to be alive. “ He admitted, flipping through some of the papers. “ But Morgan can visit anytime she wants. You and Miss Potts would always be welcome. “

“ Well, the man has died twice and could have died a third time. And you’ve nearly died more than once. But I guess it sometimes takes an Avenger to understand another one. Tho Pep hates when I call her an Avenger. She just says she’s an overprotective wife and mother and doesn’t want to be sidelined. “ Then he looked at him almost worriedly, as a joke. “ I’m surrounded by stubborn women, Steve. My father cursed that I have a kid as bad as me, and I’m pretty sure that’s gonna end up happening. Morgan’s already going into my garage and playing with things no five year old should. “ He shook his head a bit in thought.

“ Bucky couldn’t have it anyway. No matter the work he’s done to get back to the guy you knew, and even though he was brainwashed he still hurt a lot of people. “ Including his parents, but he was trying his best not to get in an argument. Their arguments led to them brawling and neither of them needed it right now. “ You might cut Phil’s heart out and put it on a plate before you give your shield away. No doubt he’d probably add it to his Captain America collection. Ya know, now that he finally has the lifestyle doll and all. Tony grinned. “ Oh excuse me, action figure. “

“ If you think Parker’s a handful you have no idea how difficult Harley was. But he’s a good kid, no doubt. I dunno I guess I just flock the troublemakers right to me like a magnet. “ Tony stared at his hand briefly but took it from a shake to pulling him in for a half hug. “ You have five years to make up for. But make up for it with Agent. You both deserve to have a life outside of universe saving too, ya know. — so couples butter churning, then? “
