FINAL EXAM
Title: A Day at the Lake
Tumblr media
(Before Picture)
Tumblr media
(Final Picture)
I chose to paint a scenic oil painting because I love scenic views. They capture my personality and the perspective I have in life, which is the beauty you see of the real world. The meaning of the title I came up with “A Day at the Lake” is to acknowledge what I am seeing without showing myself in the painting. Seeing what is actually in front of you is the beauty in art. I personally have never seen mountains, but I’m hoping they look a lot like this. I’ve been doing scenic paintings for awhile, and although I have not mastered it, I do think that my mindset and what I am thinking of when starting a painting, is going the right direction, and that is important to me. Painting is important to me and I hope to continue achieving my goals.

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 4

For this assignment I chose to do an abstract painting of splatter paint. A lot of Jackson Pollock's art is this kind of abstract work, and when I did research on him, I thought this type of stuff looked really cool. Pollock did a lot of paintings through his years from abstract imagery to his famous drip paintings. Pollock studied painting with Thomas Hart Benton. The reason for Pollock to study with Thomas Hart Benton and using abstract imagery in his paintings to detach himself from imagery in his drip paintings because I think he wanted to show people what he can really do and express his personality through his art. He wanted to show off his feelings through abstract personalities. I think that Pollock used this type of art to express himself in different ways than most art form A do. Many people interpret his paintings differently, but I see frustration and trapped in his paintings, which could possibly mean he did not have the best life. Every artwork is different, which makes Pollock's unique.

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 3
Tumblr media
Artwork was painted by Salvator Rosa, called the "Landscape with a Lake, Mountains and Five Soldiers in the Foreground".
DESCRIBE PHYSICAL QUALITIES (THE FACTS):
-What is it made of? It is made of oil paints on a canvas.
-How big is it? It is 124.1 cm x 204.5 cm.
-What colors and shapes are used? There are bright colors in the sky but darker colors shown on the ground. There is pointy and curvy shapes (mountains) and smooth streaks (water).
-What subjects (if any) are represented? The focus/subject of the painting is to show the violent soldiers getting ready to fight.
-How was the work designed? The artwork was designed by brushes with oil paints on a very large canvas.
-Is it balanced? There is balance. The distribution of color, shape, and space allow the painting to be beautiful and have stable elements.
-What is emphasized? Rhythm? Proportion? Rhythm is shown in the sky with streaks of paint. This is also shown in the reflection of the water.
-Contrast? Does it have unity and variety? The painting shows unity by showing how the sky works together with the greenery landscape, along with the soldiers on the land.
THIS PART IS ALL ABOUT YOU:
-How does the work make you feel? Rosa's artwork makes me have passion and enthusiasm, because his work is shown to have a lot of emotion. When painting you use your emotions to come out with something beautiful. I have painted with emotion every time and I have amazing paintings.
How or why does it evoke these feelings? It evokes my feelings because I am inspired to have the creativeness that Rosa had. Emotion is something used in every painting and it is important.
NOW RESEARCH:
Rosa's painter his famous painting in 1656 and it was purchased for the John Ringling Museum in the 1930s. Knowing this information, I think I chose this painting because of the creativeness and uniqueness it showed. I really like landscape paintings and this one catched my eye when I saw it in the museum.
THINKING:
What movement is the art work associated with? The movement is Romanticism, which is defined as past events of emotion and inspiration of the artist to include his/her emotion in their artwork.
What does the artwork say about the artist that made it? The artwork contains emotion from the artist, I mean doesn't every artwork have emotion? His ability to use his emotion with the landscape and soldiers contain vivid struggles being faced of the soldiers.
Can you tell what the artist was trying to say? I think Rosa was trying to explain to his audience of the struggle of surviving.
How clearly does the artist get their message across? I think Rosa got his message across clearly, because it makes the emotional effect with color.
THE LAST (most important) PART:
Rosa's painting is important for society/world because it outlines the struggles that the soldiers have to face, which is to survive in bad conditions. The landscape proves that there are no resources in order to help the soldiers. I chose the painting because I imagined myself in the soldiers position. It it very unique with a lot of depth.
PARAGRAPH OF 300-450 WORDS:
Salvator Rosa is best known as an Italian Baroque painter today. He romanticized landscapes and historical paintings and often set his paintings of dark and untamed nature, which were influenced from the 17th century into the early 19th century. Rosa had exceptional talent in oil paintings and printmaking. A large-scale oil landscape by the famous painter Rosa dominates one wall of a gallery at the Ringling Museum of Sarasota, FL. This large horizontal canvas contains all the elements of Rosa’s signature landscapes. It is called the "Landscape with a Lake, Mountains and Five Soldiers.” It was painted in 1656 and is part of John Ringling's original collection of paintings that was purchased in the 1930s. The painting shows mostly figures of soldiers, warriors and bandits, whose presence was a threatening reality in rural areas. In Rosa's mind/world, I think they are treated as "outlaw heroes that would fight against the territorial powers. It was typical for Rosa to place groups of small figures, in the guise of bandits or soldiers, within the context of rugged and menacing landscapes. The painting highlights his technique and general story-telling quite well. It has light and shadow; and he creates a message that needs no true narrative as an explanation. The contrasting clouds in the dark sky cast deepening shadows on the moving water and the windblown trees. The rugged scenery, with fragments of branches and greenery scattered throughout, gave a vibrant dimension to the composition. Rosa used the medium of landscape art to encourage, while highlighting the dangers of travel and the exploration of the wilderness. The violence shown in the painting of the soldiers is highlighted by the character of the landscape around them. Paintings such as this were particularly loved and collected in eighteenth-century England. This painting depicts how I feel about nature and the beautiful scenic deposition to it. I love landscapes because they are unique and beautiful to see on a canvas and in real life, which is why I chose one of Rosa’s creative paintings.

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 2
1.) JOURNALING
• Unity and Variety: Unity is the appearance of comparison in art. All parts of the work fit together well, while variety is the elements of art that work differently with one another, not in unity. You can find this in a house where everything fits together well.
• Balance: When art is equal. This type of art can be achieved through symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance. You can see this in the waves of the ocean.
• Emphasis and subordination: Emphasis is the principle of design of one element, or a combination of elements, create attention than anything else in a composition, while subordination is toning down other compositional elements to bring more attention to the focal point. You can see this when there are red flowers in a garden, but one yellow one is in the group that does not match.
• Directional Forces: Directional focus is the paths created within a work of art that leads the eye through the composition. We can see this in a artwork with mountains going down with land going straight as the horizon line.
•Repetition and Rhythm: Repetition is the simplest item you can use to give a piece of unity and to show the flow, while rhythm involves using spaces between elements to give the impression of movement. We can see this as a daily thing of the cycle of the sun.
• Scale and Proportion: Scale is the similarity of size to one object to another, while proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in connection to other parts of the same object as a whole. We can see this in a room like a classroom or kitchen, which contain the objects that make up the room.
2.) WRITING AND LOOKING
Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Starry Night is a piece that is brimming with whirling clouds, shining stars, and much more. The setting connects viewers of the swirling sky that directs the viewer’s eye around the painting, with spacing between the stars and the curving contours creating a dot-to-dot effect. These elements ensure fluidity and contours that made this art important.

Vincent Van Gogh's, "The Starry Night"- located in Chapter 3, page 53.
3.) CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD
An experience of how color has affected me is when I redid my room for a nice change. When my sister moved out, I got her room, which had purple walls. The purple was nice, but it just was not me. Me and my dad painted my room and wonderful grey-blue color (my favorite color). The blue lit the room so much better than the purple and brought saturation with everything else. The hue of the blue was an eye opener for me, and this is exactly what I needed in my life for my room, my space. Finally if I had to pick a color scheme it would be grey-blue with rustic white furniture. I love the color balance of the two.
4.) ART PROJECT (artist’s choice)
Tumblr media
I chose to paint this because I am passionate about scenic nature, like mountains and waterfalls/water and how everything comes together as a whole. In reality, I would really like to see mountains like this.
5.) PHOTO/DESIGN

When I saw this picture, I thought it was surprising how much damage a hurricane can bring to a town. Hurricane Galveston happened in a town in Texas in the early 1900s0s and to this day this hurricane is the biggest hurricane on record. The picture allows us to understand what destruction from natural disasters can cause loss of life. The photograph represents the story showing the devastation disasters like this bring to help acknowledge to readers what future storms can bring.
Photojournalism: James Nachtwey. From "The Day the Earth Moved." Time.com. March 28, 2011
Tumblr media
This photo shows a destruction phase of a tsunami, thus acknowledging the title. I thought the picture looked like a great representation of damage by seeing that a vehicle is upside down. I picked this photo, because it is important to know that tsunamis can be dangerous and life threatening. The photo visually represents the story to the viewer by being at a loss for words of a disaster that seems unreal.

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 1
1.) Hello! My name is Jayna and I was born in Sarasota, FL., and I have been here all throughout my life. This is my second year at SCF and I am majoring in nursing. I chose nursing because I want to help people at their worst, and knowing that I have helped someone is such a great feeling.
Tumblr media
~Ibrahim Mahama 2015 Post No Bill. Jute Sacks; dimensions variable, at Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.
~When I first looked at the artwork I felt confused and striking by the design of the quilts and how they are distributed for this piece of art.
Five Facts:
•Ibrahim Mahama was bown in the northern region of Ghana in the town of Tamale.
•Mahama is a Ghanaian artist and author known for his peculiar artistic methods, including taking discarded items from his homeland and placing them in different places.
•Mahama's inspiration in his artwork comes from materials, precisely jute sacks, and items that have lost their meaning. He has also created art out of wooden boxes discarded by shoe shiners.
•For his famous "Jute Sacks" installation, Mahama collected materials he had purchased from markets, like cocoa sacks and then coal sacks. His works are the result of his investigation of the conditions of supply and demand in African markets.
•His works have already been exhibited at the Biennale of Sydney, the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in Italy, and Documenta-14 in Kassel, Germany, and Athens, Greece.
~Seeing the artwork from the first time and knowing now of the history behind it, I do not feel confused about it anymore. I feel sad and open-minded with Mahama's artwork by knowing now what he had to go through to make it become his own. Ibrahim Mahama came from a country with many problems with supply and demand. His works of art cultivated the aspects of the conditions he and his family members were facing and this created an artistic vision for him to construct art out of commonplace materials. His remarkable idea of using materials like a sack, allows him to see the history "knitted" into it and uses it to represent value, industry condition, globalization, and economic exchange.
2.) An artwork that I have framed and hung on my wall is Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.” My mom bought it for me because she knew it is my favorite painting, and it’s my favorite because the painting captures my strong emotions by the sky and I am in a state of awe. The painting is a beautiful artwork that makes me dream of comforting emotions. The painting inspires me to try my best in life, and when I look at it everyday, it has the same expression of never giving up. It’s a busy painting, but even though there is a lot going on, there’s so much to look at and to learn from.

3.) When I look at art, the “baggage” I bring to others is the emotions from passed experiences that have affected me for the better. I am a 19-year-old female. I was born in Sarasota, FL.. My ethnicity is white and I am not in any organized group. I work at Oak & Stone, and I work very hard to save money. My personality, skills, and abilities that make me stand apart from everyone else makes me a unique person.
