JJ's super interesting reactions to Kie showing affection towards anyone that isn't him

Okay so this shit makes me so incredibly sure about JJ’s feelings for Kiara that I truly cannot see how some people don’t realize it.

Quick psychology lesson (pls don't yell at me if this isn't perfectly accurate, psych is complex and that's why i love it okay):

Reaction formation is a defense mechanism in which someone tries to hide or appease unwanted emotions by openly expressing the opposite of them.

Projection is another defense mechanism in which someone displaces their own emotion onto someone else in order to avoid dealing with it internally.

I think that JJ subconsciously employs a combination of these two defense mechanisms in response to his feelings for Kie.

The unwanted emotion: We know that JJ had apparently tried to take things further with her sometime pre-season 1, and we can assume that he got rejected, probably because of the whole “no pogue on pogue macking” rule. But those feelings don’t just magically disappear, especially when your crush is one of your best friends whom you constantly see in a bikini.

The reaction: So, I think that in order to try to repress those residual feelings for her, he jumps on the idea of her potentially liking John B, and later Pope, and becomes kind of obsessed with both of those relationships. Instead of expressing his own romantic feelings, he projects them onto his other friends and then tries to appease his jealousy through actively egging on the relationships.

In reaction formation, the expression of the opposite reaction is usually very showy and exaggerated, and I think that that definitely falls in line with how JJ seems borderline obsessed with both John B/Kie and Pope/Kie.

In 1x01, he very dramatically teases John B about Kie telling him to be careful, and basically implies that John B is an idiot for not pursuing something with her already.

And then in 1x02, after Kie has kissed John B on the cheek, JJ teases him in the same exaggerated way again, insisting that he can clearly see both of their feelings for one another. This eventually leads to John B kissing her later in the episode.

With Pope/Kie, JJ definitely seems more outwardly jealous, but he still hides a lot of it through this obsession over the relationship, trying to ask Kie how far they’ve gone sexually and then giving Pope advice. And then just like with John B, JJ's advice directly leads to Pope trying to be more physical with Kie after they get the gun out of the sewer.

Importantly, I definitely don’t think that JJ is doing any of this consciously. He is the most loyal person ever, so I highly doubt that he would purposely try to sabotage his friends’ relationships and jeopardize the group dynamic for any reason, much less one that involved his own feelings. I really do think that this is an example of his immature defense mechanisms shining through without him realizing it.

Other examples include him immediately shutting down and getting defensive when the Pogues disagree with him in 1x07, as well as him blowing the stolen 25K later on in that same episode. He also uses deflection A LOT, but I think that one is much more of a conscious choice. (i could do a whole other analysis on his defense mechanisms and i just might)

JJ is a flawed character who has been shown to not be very good at verbally expressing his emotions, so to me, this seems like a plausible explanation for his behavior regarding Kie’s relationships with John B and Pope.

TL;DR, JJ acts like the #1 John B/Kie and Pope/Kie superfan, but he really just has unresolved romantic feelings for Kie that he can’t express in a healthier way.

“You gonna ask me?” JJ mumbled, his eyes roaming over her features. He watched her brown eyes turn a little darker, watched the tip of her tongue dart out to taste her bottom lip, the upturn of her brows as she heard his question. 

“Ask you what?” Kiara responded but her voice was breathy and she knew what he meant, she knew that he knew too, ‘cause he was grinning at her and his finger was still hooked around the strap of the dress she was suddenly so glad she wore.

“You know what,” he told her and his voice was a little lower, a little rougher and he moved his hand away - to both of their disappointments. 

His hair was falling in his eyes, messy blonde blocking out bright blue but Kie could feel his gaze on her and it felt the same way it had before, just like that one time. The last time. The only time it was supposed to happen.

One of the best parts about them going from best friends to lovers is that they already know one another so deeply, so when the time they spend together only grows exponentially, reading each other becomes second nature

JJ has never wanted to burden others with having to ’deal with’ his problems, so he rarely talks reveals when he is upset about something or a situation

Kie knows this and is aware of how incredibly unhealthy and unfair to him this habit is, so whenever she notices that he starts to run his hands through his hair excessively, or becomes quiet during a conversation, or even is suspiciously enthusiastic about something that helps take the attention off of him, she makes an excuse to pull him away from the others and gently brings up the fact that she knows he is upset and tries to convince him to head to bed early with her so they can talk it out

Kie doesn’t hold in how she’s feeling very often, so it really isn’t difficult for JJ to know what mood she’s in and how she needs him to act around her

That being said, Kie is an incredibly passionate person and will often find herself on a spiral of tasks or projects that causes her to forget to take care of herself

JJ is extremely aware of this side of her, and pretty much daily will check in to make sure she’s eaten, will refill her water bottle and place it in front of her so she subconsciously drinks it, will sometimes have to literally pick her up and drag her to bed so that she gets the sleep that she needs

Kie is also under certain pressures and expectations that come with being from a Kook family, and while if it were up to her she would not be bothered by them at all, but even she is vulnerable to judgmental stares and whispers behind her back

On those days it is especially important for JJ to recognize she is feeling self-conscious and insecure, showering her with compliments and praise throughout the day, making her feel comfortable in her body and in who she is, making sure she’s eating when he knows she’s hungry but will try and turn down food that is offered 

There is very little that they don’t know about each other at this point so reading one another just becomes as easy as talking

Babies/zzzzz/nicknames!

Babies (Do they want kids? If yes, when do they start having babies?)

I think having kids is something that neither of them wanted when they are younger, but when they start to grow up and the two of them have been together for a bit, the idea of having a little one that is a combination of the two of them that really solidifies their life together becomes more and more appealing

JJ obviously has had a horrible experience with his parents, and while Kie has really worked on having a better relationship with her parents, they both are at first really scared of putting a child through what they went through

But when they really start to talk more about it, they realize that this is their opportunity to raise a child the way they wished they were raised, so they can ensure there is a person in the world that felt loved and supported by family

And each of them just knows that the other is going to be the most incredible parent, it almost feels wrong to not have them get to fulfill that role

While they start talking about the idea kids only a couple years into their relationship, they don’t plan on actually having any for a while, but nothing is ever easy for JJ and Kiara

Their first is 100% an accident and they find out on JJ’s 26th birthday. It seems young to a lot of people, but to them it’s the most perfect mistake in the world

At this point, they’ve traveled the world together, surfed waves on almost every coast they could find, immersed themselves in cultures in dozens of different countries had sex in every one too and they were itching for their next adventure

And even though they weren’t married or really settled down yet, they had seen enough of the world and of life that there was nothing the wanted to do more than show it off to a new little person

JJ and Kie LOVE nicknames

I mean both of them literally go by nicknames already, they clearly love to be called something other than their actual names

JJ is a little more public with his names for Kie, it doesn’t matter who’s in the room when he’s calling her babe, pretty mama, love, (Kiki to piss her off)

But when they’re in private the softer names come out- sweetheart, beautiful, angel, lovey, and she never has to say it out loud but he knows how much she loves them

And if Kie loves to be called soft nicknames, then JJ is addicted because that boy absolutely melts when she’s running her hands through his hair and calling him, her sweet boy, baby boy, angel, love

In front of the others, she really will only call him babe, because her names for him just feel very intimate between the two of them

Especially because JJ absolutely has a praise kink so in bed Kie is always trying to say everything she can to work him up and ‘my sweet/good/beautiful/precious boy always does the trick

Zzz (How do they sleep? What are their sleep habits?)

Once everything is all over, the gold hunt is done, and they aren’t constantly on the verge of death, everyone not surprisingly starts to have a pretty hard time sleeping

Kie and JJ especially have found that sleeping apart from one another, while possible, is very much not preferred as it involves hours of tossing and turning that ends with them calling one another anyway

Nightmares also become an issue, with Kie reliving JJ’s near death experience over and over again in her dreams with various outcomes. JJ never had peaceful dreams to begin with, and his already plagued nightmares of abuse are combined with running for his life, thinking his best friends are dead, and losing everyone that he loves.

Needless to say, they try to sleep together as much as possible, so as soon as one announces they are turning in for the night, it’s not even a question that the other is following

Depending on who needs it most that night they switch off who gets to be the little spoon pretty regularly, and while that’s their favorite position to sleep in, they’ve been known to fall asleep on one another’s chest pretty often as well

JJ also is a naturally very warm person, which is the best for Kie in the cooler months of the year, but as soon as the heat starts to become uncomfortable she has to put her foot down and insist on at least an inch between them when they fall asleep

JJ pouts and complains, and their bodies end up finding one another during the night anyway, causing them to wake up sweaty and hot, but neither of them really mind as it gives them a great excuse for a morning shower together

I think this one kinda goes along with their love languages as well just because they know exactly what to do that will make the other feel warm and loved

Like when JJ really wants to make her feel like the most special girl in the world, he’ll do what she never thought he would ever do: pull out a cookbook

He knows that making food for the person you love is something Kie has seen growing up with parents who run a restaurant, so when he makes the effort (even if the result isn’t incredible) she won’t stop smiling the whole night and anything that was bothering her before was forgotten about

Kie, on the other hand, knows exactly how important it is for JJ to feel like he isn’t just being pitied and that he is actually exactly who she wants to spend all her free time with

She will always make sure to have time set aside that is special for just the two of them to be alone with one another without their friends

It could be surfing or taking the pogue out or even just smoking a joint on the beach together, just making sure that he knows how important and special she sees him and their time together is what matters
