It was the morning of the first devils game of the season and Mackenzie was buzzing with excitement, she always loved watching Jack play, he always came alive on the ice, it brought out a fire in him that Mackenzie rarely saw outside the rink. She swayed her hips happily in a beat as she walked into the kitchen, “Good morning gorgeous” she greeted Kaylee leaning down to kiss her cheek. “Well good morning my pocket full of sunshine, what made you so happy this morning?” Kaylee smiled up at her. “It’s the devils first game of the season!” Mackenzie smiled as she opened the refrigerator, grabbing a yoghurt pot.

“Oh yeah! Did Jack leave you a ticket? I’m gonna buy one when we get there” Kaylee asked as she ate at the island. “mhm he texted them through last night, he’s already got you a ticket though” Mackenzie laughed, “Again?! I told him I could buy my own, lemme venmo him the money” Kaylee pulled out her phone, “he’s just gonna venmo it back Kay, you know how he is” Mackenzie sighed before laughing. “Damn boy is too kind for his own good, now where are we sitting? I need to know how much to send” Kaylee looked up expectantly at Mackenzie.

The blonde waved her spoon, “Next to the devils bench” she laughed looking at her best friend's expression. “But they’re like $300 each!” Kaylee exclaimed as she pulled up Jack's contact, “what are you doing now?” Mackenzie laughed, “I’m giving him a piece of my mind” Kaylee huffed, “good luck, he’s at morning skate right now” Mackenzie informed the brunette before eating her yoghurt. Kaylee shrugged and tried to call anyway, as Mackenzie predicted it went straight to voicemail.

“Jackson Rowden Hughes you better call me as soon as you get this, you’re in big trouble Mister!” Kaylee shouted through the phone before hanging up, “you do realise that’s not his name” Mackenzie laughed, “oh I know but shouting Jack just doesn’t have the same effect.” Kaylee laughed before heading to the bathroom, “want me to join you hot stuff?” Mackenzie wiggled her eyebrows.

“I’d love for you to join me but i doubt your boyfriend would appreciate that” Kaylee laughed before closing the door, “what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him but you could've let me watch” Mackenzie shouted back teasingly before hearing Kaylee cackle, “maybe next time sweet cheeks”

Mackenzie shook her head as she threw her empty pot away before heading for her room, she looked through her dresser picking out an outfit for tonight. “Kay?” she shouted, “yeah?” Kaylee shouted back slightly muffled. “What are you wearing tonight?” Kenzie asked as she walked into Kaylee’s room. “Oooo I don’t know yet, probably black jeans and a jersey?” Kenzie heard the muffled reply. Mackenzie put some music on as she went through options.

It had been about 45 minutes since Kenzie had started planning outfits, she’d moved into the living room to attend a lecture as Kaylee was in her room attending the same lecture and editing an assignment.

Kaylee’s phone rang from the kitchen, Mackenzie got up from her spot in the hanging chair to check who was calling, when she saw it was Jack calling, she walked into Kaylee’s room passing her the phone. “It’s Jack.” Mackenzie whispered before leaving, “woah woah woah, you can stay missy, you’ll wanna be here” Kaylee laughed as she accepted the call, putting it on speaker.

“Hey Kaylee” Jack spoke first, “JACK ROWDEN HUGHES” Kaylee screeched as Mackenzie winced. Jack sighed, “yes Kaylee, whatever your middle name is Johnson?” “it’s Blair for future reference” Mackenzie spoke up. Kaylee turned to glare at her, “whose side are you on here?” she asked, quirking her eyebrow. “I’m in no man’s land babe” Mackenzie defended as she lifted Kaylee’s drink to her lips, “just that if you know his full name, shouldn’t he know yours?” she added before drinking.

Kaylee huffed, “fine, anyways. why are you buying me tickets Jacky boy, you tryna sugar daddy me?” Mackenzie spat her drink out as Jack laughed, “you know what Kaylee, I’ve known you for 2 years now and yet you still surprise me with the things you say” Jack shot back, “what can i say, I’m gifted” Kaylee flipped her hair, “but seriously Jack, how much do I owe you for the ticket?” Kaylee asked, “Just call it an early birthday present” he answered. “… my birthdays in June, it’s October” Kaylee deadpanned, “ok, early christmas present then” Jack laughed before hanging up.

“Your boyfriend is impossible” Kaylee huffed, “you’re both impossible, he just wants you to like him” Mackenzie laughed. “I already do! I love that boy to death, he’s my brother from another mother, my homie” Kaylee made a peace sign. “all peace and love over here” Mackenzie sighed, “why am i friends with you?” “JUST FRIENDS HAVE I BEEN DEMOTED?! this is the worst day of my life” Kaylee flopped dramatically on her bed. “Babes you know I love you but you are so dramatic” Mackenzie spoke before leaving to continue her lecture. “I love you more sugar tits!” Kaylee shouted down the hall.

It was dark as Mackenzie finished her work, she sighed putting her arms up and stretching her back before checking the time, Kaylee had gone out to grab them some food before the game and still wasn’t back, Mackenzie packed her things away before heading for the shower. “Kenny-bear?” Kaylee called as she closed the front door, “in the shower” Mackenzie replied as she washed her hair. “I got you nuggets, there wasn’t really anything else that looked good today” Kaylee called as she walked down the hallway, “Okay thank you, i’ll be out soon” Mackenzie finished up before leaving to sit in the living room, eating nuggets in a towel.

The girls chatted idly as they ate before going to their respective rooms to change, “are you ready to watch our boys win?” Kaylee asked. “hell yeah, let’s go. Are the boys meeting us there?” Kenzie asked as they took a quick mirror picture before walking out the door, “yeah Cody and Chase are, Jaden, Preston and Hunter are gonna meet us after detention.” Kaylee read the message. “Okay, sounds good, is Cody bringing the white claws?” Kenzie asked as they pressed for the elevator. “Yeah, he asked what we’re planning on doing afterwards” Kaylee asked as she walked in and pressed the ground level. “I’m not sure. Depends if Jack and the boys are up for anything afterwards. I’m not sure if they have anything going on early tomorrow” Mackenzie texted the group chat the same message.

The girls stood outside of their apartment building, waiting for confirmation that the boys had left so they could begin walking. A gust of wind swept across the pair as they chatted, predicting goals and who would score them, “fuck me it’s cold” Kaylee mumbled before jumping up and down trying to get warm, Mackenzie shrugged off her jacket and draped it across Kaylee’s shoulders, “Babe I think I’m a little to big for your jacket” Kaylee pouted, “It’s not my jacket, It’s Jacks” Mackenzie laughed.

“Of course it is” Kaylee sighed as she shrugged the jacket on, Mackenzie wrapped her scarf around her for warmth, she was already shivering but she hid it as best as she could, knowing Kaylee would throw a fit. Soon a car pulled into view along the main road, and Ellen was behind the wheel.

She drove past the girls before doing a double take and turning left, Mackenzie furrowed her eyebrows. “Why’s she turning left? The rink isn’t down that road” Mackenzie mumbled to herself, Ellen appeared in view again shortly after, slowly pulling up to the girls and rolling down the window, “Hey Sweeties, what are you doing out there? You’ll catch a cold, come on, in” Ellen nodded her head to the car, as Mackenzie and Kaylee walked towards it, Kaylee hopped into the back as Mackenzie rounded to the front. “Thank you so much Mrs Hughes” Kaylee thanked as she relaxed in the seat.

“Kaylee, honey I’ve told you before you can call me Ellen” Ellen laughed, as she began driving again. “Hey Mama Hen, I missed you” Mackenzie smiled at the older woman, “Hey Kenz, I’ve missed you too, how have you been? It’s been a while huh?” Ellen asked. “I’ve been good, how are you and Jim?” Mackenzie asked as she turned to look at Ellen, “I’ve been good, very busy though. We visited Quinn in Vancouver as I’m sure you know. I haven’t had much time to come and see Jack as much as I’ve wanted to” Ellen sighed as they approached a red light. “He understands, I can imagine it isn’t easy trying to split your time evenly. At least Jack and Luke will be in the same place soon, so it’ll make it a little easier splitting it two ways instead of three” Mackenzie reassured. “Plus with training and this one, Jack is always looked after! and I’m sure Luke will be too!” Kaylee laughed. “You make it sound like I’m overbearing” Mackenzie laughed looking at Ellen who lifted an eyebrow, “I promise I’m not!” Mackenzie defended as Ellen laughed “Oh I know you aren’t sweetie” Ellen reassured.

A short while later they were pulling up to the arena’s parking lot barriers for players and pass holders, Ellen rolled down the window as a security guard approached them, “Hi Ladies, Can I see your passes?” he asked.

“Kaylee, can you pass me my bag please?” Ellen asked the brunette, “of course Mrs Hughes… I mean Ellen” Kaylee passed the black bag through the gap between the two front seats. Mackenzie pulled her pass out of her pocket, “here Ellen” she gave her pass to Ellen who flashed them both at the security guard, he scanned them before his machine flashed red.

“Okay, this one is working fine” he passed back Ellen’s pass, “however this one isn’t flagging on my system, it appears it’s been taken off the players account” he handed Mackenzie’s pass back to Ellen, “I can’t let these two in without a working pass, I’m really sorry.” he apologised. Ellen went to protest, however Mackenzie shook her head, “It’s ok Ellen, we’ll walk around the front” Mackenzie reassured. “Mackenzie, you’ll get recognised… both of you will” Ellen worried, “I’ll keep her safe, we’ll meet you inside.” Kaylee reassured her as they climbed out.

“You call me if anything happens, both of you” Ellen warned, “Scouts honour” Kaylee saluted. “I’ll call Jim and let him know as well, in case you can’t get hold of me. He’s already inside” Ellen informed before moving off to park in the multi-storey.

The girls walked around the front, being greeted with a long line of awaiting fans and ticket holders, “Great” Kaylee sighed as they joined the back, “MACKENZIE, KAYLEE” a familiar voice shouted, gaining the attention of some people around, “trust Cody to make it obvious” Kaylee sighed as they walked over to them. Cody passed the girls a white claw each. “I thought we were meeting you inside?” Chase frowned. “You were but Mackenzie’s pass isn’t working so we can’t get in” Kaylee explained.

“Ohhh, well drink up, it’s gonna be a long wait” Chase said as he stared ahead. Kenzie sighed, pulling her phone out calling Jack, she doubted he’d answer but thought she’d try anyways. “Hi it’s Jack, sorry i can’t come to the phone right now, leave a message and i’ll get back to you” Jack's voicemail spoke out, Mackenzie sighed before hanging up. “Drink up Kenny-bear” Cody lifted his can to cheer hers, they linked arms and chugged their cans. An hour into their wait Mackenzie was convinced her lips were turning blue, she was still wrapped in her scarf without her jacket, she felt a tap on her shoulder from behind and turned to see two girls who were no older than 17. “Erm Hi I’m sorry to bother you but I was wondering if we could get a picture?” the red head asked shyly.

“Of course” Mackenzie reached her hand out for her phone assuming they wanted one of the two together. “Oh I meant one with you?” the shy girl smiled, “oh sorry, of course you can” Mackenzie smiled tapping Kaylee. “Can you take a picture for us?” Mackenzie asked her best friend. “Course babe” Kaylee smiled, holding the young girl's phone. After taking a few pictures together, the two girls thanked her. “So is it your first game?” Mackenzie asked, smiling kindly, “for me it is, she’s been to one before” the red head pointed to her friend. “Oh I'm so sorry! I forgot to ask for your names” Mackenzie apologised. “It’s ok, I’m Megan and this is Rachel” the red head responded.

“Well it’s lovely to meet you girls, What do you think the score will be?” Mackenzie asked, keeping the conversation going. “Hmm I think 4-0, Jacks definitely gonna score” Megan responded, “I think maybe 2-3” Rachel thought aloud. “Would you mind if I posted the picture on my story?” Rachel asked, “Of course!! You’re the first people to ask for a picture of just me” Mackenzie laughed.

The girls laughed, “normally I’m taking the pictures, people have recognised me before but never asked for pictures or anything” Mackenzie added. “Does it ever bother you? People always wanting pictures of Jack? Sorry if that’s too personal” Megan asked the blonde. “It’s a little personal but I don’t mind answering. At first it did bother me, every time we went anywhere he’d be constantly asked for pictures and I’d just stand there.

“Jack would always be constantly apologetic for it but he didn’t need to, it wasn’t his fault. Now I’m used to it, although when they ask for pictures as we’re getting out of the car or at dinner it is a little frustrating, there’s a time and a place for pictures you know?” Mackenzie replied, “yeah, I don’t know about you but the last thing I’d want is a camera shoved in my face when I’m eating my dinner” Megan laughed. “Absolutely.” Rachel added.

“Oh it seems we’re next, well again it was so lovely to meet you girls. Enjoy the game” Mackenzie hugged them both before turning to her friends. “Look at you, my little superstar!” Chase teased, smiling. “Oh please, It was one picture” Mackenzie giggled as they walked up to security checks. After getting through they walked up to scan their tickets, flashing green they started heading to their seats, grabbing some popcorn as they went. “I’m just gonna call Ellen to let her know we’re through.” Mackenzie informed the group as she stood to the side, she dialled Ellen’s number but it went to voicemail, so she called Jim’s number instead.

“Hello?” Jim’s faint voice could be heard amongst the loud background noise. “Hey Jim, It’s Kenzie” Mackenzie spoke sweetly, “Hi Sweetheart, is everything ok?” Jim asked as the background noise began fading. “Yeah, just letting you know that we got through okay” Mackenzie said, “Alright, I’ll let Ellen know.” Jim spoke softly.

“Oh Jim? I won’t be able to wait by the changing rooms after the game, my pass isn’t working. Could you let Jack know I’ll meet him out back by the parking lot door?” Mackenzie asked the oldest Hughes. “I’ll let him know” Jim assured. “Enjoy the game” Mackenzie smiled. “You too, bye!” Jim hung up, Mackenzie slid her phone into her back pocket before walking back over to her friends.

“Ready?” Cody asked, the girls nodded as they walked into the rink. Once settled in their seats they began chatting amongst themselves, however Mackenzie sat nervously chewing the skin around her thumb, tapping her foot on the concrete below her.

“You okay?” Kaylee whispered, leaning across to Mackenzie. Mackenzie was zoned out staring straight ahead. “Kenz?” Kaylee elbowed her gently, “mhm?” Mackenzie hummed. “Are you okay?” Kaylee questioned again, “Yeah, I’m good.” Mackenzie reassured. Kaylee furrowed her eyebrows but carried on chatting.

The game was soon in full swing, the Devils were up 3-2 by the middle of the third period, Nico had scored twice and Jack had scored with an assist. The middle Hughes boy had the puck and was making his way towards the Islanders goal, but the next few seconds seemed to move in slow motion, Jack had shot the puck into the goal moments before he was taken to the ice by a defenseman.

The defenseman got up fairly quickly, however Jack was still down. Mackenzie shot out of her seat, shouting cusses at the defender before mumbling under her breath “Jack, please be ok. Get up baby, get up.” Jack slowly got up to his hands and knees before slipping down again. Mackenzie watched, feeling helpless as the medical team arrived by his side. Nico looked up searching the stands searching for someone, as soon as his eyes locked with Mackenzie’s he began skating towards her.

“He’s gonna be ok, they’re taking him to the medical room, if you want to go and see him” Nico shouted over the crowd, as Mackenzie started moving towards the locker rooms. She glanced back at the love of her life laying on a stretcher, and whilst deep in her brain she knew it was protocol for players to be taken off that way after taking more powerful hits, she’d seemed to have lost all logical thinking.

Mackenzie wasn’t sure how but she’d somehow made it to the tunnels, as she was about to walk down them a security guard gently grabbed her wrist to gain her attention.

“Do you have a pass?” the guard asked. “Erm y-yeah” Mackenzie dug through her pocket to pull it out but just as earlier it didn’t work. “I’m sorry you can’t come through.” the guard arrogantly said. “b-but you don’t understand! m-my boyfriend Jack is in there hurt, they’ve just taken him down” Mackenzie stuttered.

“Hughes?” the guard questioned, Mackenzie simply nodded, expecting him to let her through now that he had that information however he just laughed at her. “Oh if I had a dollar every time one of you crazy fangirls used that excuse, I’d be a billionaire.” He cackled.

Mackenzie sighed before walking away to call Ellen. “Mackenzie?” Ellen’s reassuring voice spoke, “E-ellen, they won’t let me in” Mackenzie mumbled on the verge of tears. “What was that honey? Where are you?” Ellen spoke calmly, looking over at Jim. “By the tunnels, but they won’t let me in. I need to see Jack, I need to see him” Mackenzie spoke louder, a tear sliding down her face. “Okay Honey, Jim and I are on our way, just stay there. Everything’s gonna be fine” Ellen’s motherly instincts kicked in as she stayed on the line with her until she saw the tunnels. Mackenzie stood off just to the side pacing back and forth, biting her nails.

Ellen rushed over giving the smaller girl a hug, whispering reassurances in her ear, before gently guiding her to the tunnel entrance again. The same security guard approached them, smiling at Ellen but frowning when he saw Mackenzie again. “She can’t come through” He pointed at the smaller blonde, “She, is my son’s girlfriend and I doubt Jack would appreciate you talking to her like that” Ellen responded, “so I suggest you move and allow her through” Ellen stood expectantly.

The security guard nodded defeated, as the girls made their way through the corridors, Jim following behind. Ellen guided Mackenzie gently into the medical room, where a sweaty Jack layed. “Jack!” Mackenzie exclaimed before running over to him, “are you okay baby? What hurts? Just you wait till I see the jerk that knocked you over!” Mackenzie rushed out, grabbing one of his hands in one of hers, she began brushing the hair off his sweaty forehead with the other. Jack layed there, barely able to keep his eyes open but lifted his lip in a slight smile. “Hey baby” He whispered.

“Hey bubs, how are you feeling?” Mackenzie asked as she leaned over to give him a kiss, “like I just got floored” Jack hummed in thought. “Are you in pain? I can go find a medical staff to give you something?” Mackenzie suggested. “They’ve already given me something” Jack mumbled just as the team's doctor walked in. He approached the table with a smile, “Hello Jack, how are you feeling?” he asked as he began looking through cabinets seemingly for equipment.

“Erm dizzy, my shoulder hurts, and my eyes feel heavy” Jack spoke, sounding unsure of himself. “Okay, let’s have a look shall we? If you could follow the light for me” the doctor explained as he began his examinations. After a while he concluded that Jack needed to go to the hospital to get some scans done as he suspected a concussion and a broken collarbone. Mackenzie stepped away as they began getting Jack ready to be moved, Ellen came over and grabbed her hand.

“Jim is going to take Kaylee back to your place and I’m going to take Jack's car to meet you at the hospital, ok honey” Ellen squeezed her hand, “are you sure? I can drive Jack's car if you want to ride with him” Mackenzie assured. Before Ellen could reply Jack's disorientated voice called out as they wheeled him to the ambulance, “Kenzie?”

“I think that answers that question” Ellen smiled knowingly, “I’ll call you if anything happens on the way there” Mackenzie promised before trailing behind Jack. “Mack?” Jack called again trying to move, “I’m here, I’m here” Mackenzie reassured before climbing in beside him taking a seat out of the way. Jack reached out his good arm prompting her to hold it. “It’s gonna be okay bubs, I promise” Mackenzie stroked his knuckles soothingly.

Luckily the hospital was only a short journey away, Mackenzie shot a quick text to Ellen letting her know that they’d arrived and she’d wait in the waiting room for her as she wasn’t allowed out back due to not being immediate family, even though she was registered as one of Jack's emergency contacts. “Today’s really not my day” she mumbled to herself as she sat down fiddling with the necklace Jack gave her for their 2 year anniversary and felt two tears slide down her cheeks before the floodgates opened. Ellen spotted the anxious blonde immediately, she walked over and sat down slowly into the seat beside her, grabbing one of her hands as she did so.

“Jack is going to be absolutely fine” Ellen comforted her, “I know but I just hate seeing him in pain and not being able to do anything” Mackenzie sighed, “He’s worked so hard over the summer to prepare for the season ahead and now he’s out in their first game?”

“You know Jack, he’ll bounce back in no time.” Ellen squeezed her hand, “and I have no doubt he’s gonna be well looked after.” she added gently, teasing to lighten the mood, Ellen lifted her arm inviting Mackenzie to a hug as they waited.

An hour later, a doctor in dark blue scrubs stepped into the waiting room, “Family of Jack Hughes?” he asked as he scanned the waiting patients and family members.

Ellen stood up first, Mackenzie following shortly after as they approached the young man. “Hi I’m Ellen, Jack’s mom” Ellen shook his hand as she introduced herself. “I’m Mackenzie, Jack’s girlfriend” Mackenzie introduced herself. “Nice to meet you both, I’m Doctor May I’ve been the doctor in charge of Mr Hughes’ care, if you’d like to follow me” Doctor May gestured forward as he walked.

The doctor led them into a side room, “please take a seat” he gestured as he sat himself. “Is everything okay?” Mackenzie asked anxiously. “Well, Mr Hughes is currently down in X-ray, as we suspect he’s broken his collarbone. We have already performed a CT scan which shows no internal damage to his head, however we’ve confirmed a mild concussion. We’re awaiting the results of the x-ray to see if he’s going to need surgery.” Doctor May concluded.

“S-surgery?” Mackenzie’s eyes widened, “yes, naturally that is always the last resort however with Mr Hughes’ field of work we need to ensure his collarbone is stable enough to withstand forceful pressure in the future.” The doctor explained, however it didn’t make Mackenzie any less anxious, “Can I see him when he’s back?” she asked nervously. “Of course, I will update you once the results are back” Doctor May assured before standing up to show them to Jack’s empty room.

“Mr Hughes should be back soon, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask” the doctor smiled comfortably heading to the door, “Erm before you go, may I ask what medication Jack has been given?” Mackenzie spoke softly to the doctor, “He’s been given codeine and morphine” he replied as he scanned his notes.

“May you make a note to not give him any more codiene? It makes him extremely nauseous” Mackenzie requested. “Of course, I shall ask a nurse to fetch a sick bowl as well just in case, I’m not sure why that wasn't on his records” the doctor wrote down the request. “Thank you.” Mackenzie smiled as she sat in the chair closest to where the missing bed was. Ellen placed a comforting hand on the younger girl's shoulder, “you’re both as bad as each other” she stated. Mackenzie furrowed her eyebrows, “I’m sorry?” she questioned, looking up at the older woman. “You and Jack, remember when you broke your wrist when Jack was away on a roadie?” Ellen asked as she stroked Mackenzie’s hair.

Mackenzie faintly nodded, “well he asked Jim and I to fly out to come and look after you, he must have called us at least 20 times each in an hour to keep updating him” Ellen smiled at the memory, “reminds me of Jim and I in a way.”

“How so?” Mackenzie questioned, Ellen laughed to herself, “when Jim and I first started seeing each other, he’d invite me to his games. At first I thought he was a really good player until he kept trying to impress me by making some questionable plays, anyways one day he’d made arguably his most stupidest play to date and I remember so vividly sitting there, panicking, anxiously awaiting him to stand up, to brush off the ice and wink at me like he usually did. It was his way of reassuring me he was fine but this time he didn’t. Anyways he broke his leg and I made him vow to stop trying to impress me, I joked that I’d need a hospital bed next to his next time, my heart was beating so fast” Ellen laughed.

Before Mackenzie could reply a nurse entered the room, moving to open both doors as a bed was wheeled in, Jack pumping his good arm up and down in the air, babbling nonsense to one of the nurses. “My wife is so beautiful , an angel.” Jack tells him.

Ellen and Mackenzie exchange a look with wide eyes, “wife huh?” Ellen teased, “something you two aren’t telling me?” she added smirking at Mackenzie’s shocked, flushed face. “There she is! Isn’t she beautiful?” Jack shouted as he locked eyes with hers. “I assume you're his wife?” the nurse asked, Mackenzie smiled nodding, “apparently we got married” she mumbled more to herself.

The nurse smiled, before asking Ellen to follow him outside to update her on Jack’s condition. “Hey husband” Mackenzie teased as she leaned down to give him a kiss, “Hey baby, I missed you” Jack gave her a dopey grin. “I missed you too, I’ve been so worried about you bubs.” Mackenzie confessed.

“I love—“ Jack spoke before being cut off with a gag, “you gonna barf?” Mackenzie asked hurriedly as she reached for a sick bowl. Jack shook his head no before quickly nodding yes, as Mackenzie held the bowl in front of him, she rubbed his back soothingly. He dry heaved as he tried to force more out, “shh, it’s okay bubs, don’t force it out” Mackenzie reached for a bottle of water from the nightstand and placed the barf bowl on the table.

A nurse walked in to give Jack some more pain medicine, she noticed the barf bowl and grabbed some gloves. “let me get rid of this for you.” she said as she grabbed it and left, returning a short while after.

“Thank you, I’m sorry about that” Mackenzie apologised. “Oh don’t worry about it, it happens more often than you think, now I have some more pain medication for Jack” the nurse reassured before placing an IV on Jack's arm.

Jack watches as Mackenzie holds his hand squeezing reassuringly before giving him a small smile. “Feel a bit better now?” Mackenzie asked as she began brushing her hand through his hair soothingly, “mhmm” Jack hummed. Ellen entered the room, smiling softly at her son, “Oh Jack” she sighed, coming over to the unoccupied side of the bed. “How are you feeling honey?” she asked, looking down at her son worriedly.

“I feel soooo good right now!” Jack mumbled before trying to move, “woah easy there cowboy” Mackenzie moved to fluff up his pillows. “But I want cuddles.” Jack pouted. Ellen chuckled, shaking her head, “you’re literally acting like a child right now” Mackenzie giggled, “hmm” Jack smiled almost drunkenly at her.

“Ellen, I’ll be back in a sec, I’m just gonna go to the bathroom and call Kaylee to update her” Mackenzie mumbled.

“Okay sweetie, I’ll make sure this one behaves whilst you’re gone” Ellen smirked, “Jack, I’ll be back soon love, I’m just heading to the bathroom okay?” Mackenzie reassured him. Jack just grunted in response before beginning to count his fingers, “Mom, why have I only got 7 FINGERS?” Jack screeched, as Mackenzie began leaving. “No Jack, honey you have ten,see?” Ellen laughed. “But there’s 8 I counted!” Jack whined.

Mackenzie giggled as she left, she spent 10 minutes walking down the hallways searching for the bathroom before she finally found one, sighing in relief she entered. After finishing her business and washing her hands, she grabbed her phone and called Kaylee.

“Hey babe, everything okay?” Kaylee spoke as she answered, “Yeah , yeah Jack’s okay. He has a concussion but other than that no other serious injuries. We’re still waiting for news on his collarbone but the doctors believe he might need surgery” Mackenzie explained, “surgery? Damn” Kaylee tsked, “nothings been confirmed though” Mackenzie added, “How’s Jack?” She could hear Jim faintly ask. “Kenz, Jim wants to know how Jack is?” Kaylee relayed the message, “he’s doing good although apparently he only has 7 fingers and I’m his wife” Mackenzie laughed.

“Soooo high off his mind on drugs?” Kaylee summarised, “so high” Mackenzie laughed, “PLEASE film it” Kaylee begged, “oh I will, would Jim like to speak to him? I’m not sure how much you’ll get out of him at the moment” Mackenzie asked sweetly, “I’ll come visit in a little while, does he need anything?” Jim asked, “maybe some new clothes and his toothbrush, it’s not clear how long he’s gonna need to stay for. I’ll message Nico and update him as well” she replied, “I’ll speak with Nico, you just focus on Jack” Jim assured her.

“Thank you Jim” she said her goodbyes before returning to Jack’s room. “KENNY!” Jack exclaimed as he saw her enter, “Jack, shhh” Ellen lightly scolded to try and quieten him down. “Hey bubs.” Mackenzie cooed as she came over. “Have you heard anything yet?” She asked Ellen, “just that the results are back for the doctor to review” the older woman replied, Mackenzie nodded before holding Jack’s hand again as he pouted.

“Kiss?” He asked as he blew her a kiss, “Jack, your mom’s here” Mackenzie informed him, as Ellen laughed. “Hmm, and?” He puckered his lips, Mackenzie sighed before leaning in for a quick peck.

“That’s it, okay” Mackenzie brushed her free hand through his hair.

Jack huffed, and looked away, “Jack” Mackenzie laughed out, “I love you, but ‘m not making out with you when you’re mom’s here. Especially when you’re drugged up.” She tried to explain to him. Jack peeked around Mackenzie’s shoulder to look at Ellen, who was sat smirking and shaking her head at the pair.

“Mhm” Jack hummed, as his eyes began fluttering, “tired sweet boy?” Mackenzie asked as she began pulling the blanket over him, Jack nodded sleepily.

“Get some rest, okay, we’ll wake you up when the doctor’s here” she leant down to kiss his forehead as soft snores escaped his mouth.

Mackenzie then sat down in the free chair, resting her head on the bed, still holding Jack’s hand. Ellen and Mackenzie started talking about what they've been up to over the last few months, before Ellen began talking about a new recipe Mackenzie had sent her to try out, Ellen’s phone buzzed with a text from Jim saying he was outside.

“I’m going to meet Jim in the lobby and bring him up, I’ll be back soon” Ellen promised as she stood up, Mackenzie smiled as Ellen left the room, before looking back at Jack, she sighed, “what am I gonna do with you?” She mumbled before closing her eyes, slowly drifting to sleep.

Ellen and Jim approached the room, “He’s asleep at the moment” Ellen finished her sentence as she opened the door, before stopping in the doorway, “Why have you stopped here?” Jim asked, peering over his wife’s shoulder. All he could see was the lower half of Jack’s body, one leg covered the other not, and a small curtain of blonde hair.

Ellen smiled warmly before snapping a picture of the two, as she walked further in. “How long has she been out for?” Jim asked as he placed the bag of Jack's clothes down. “She was awake when I left” Ellen replied as she noticed Jack’s lip subconsciously wobbling.

The older woman grabbed the blanket he’d obviously kicked off and tucked him in again leaving a kiss on his head before she asked her husband to pass the blanket from the bag to cover the small blonde sleeping beside her son. She took a seat next to Jim on the other side and smiled fondly at the pair. “She’s good for him.” Jim commented, “she is.” Ellen agreed, smiling.

Summer of Love:- Midnight Snacks (One shot)

An:- This is a standalone fic and is not directly linked to the story of Summer of Love, this fic is set in 2021 (a year into their relationship) Not proof read.

Mackenzie awoke to the sound of Jacks stomach growling, she sighed and shook her head, turning to reach for her phone to check the time. 1:23 AM appeared in bright white across her screen, she turned slowly rocking Jack back and forth to wake him. “Babe, Jack!” Mackenzie whisper shouted. Jack grunted in response, slowly blinking, before turning to face her. “What, What is it?” Jack spoke raspily, before Mackenzie could reply, Jack’s stomach rumbled again, “That” she gestured.

Jack chuckled before climbing out of bed, “Midnight snack?” he questioned, “midnight snack” Mackenzie confirmed before climbing out herself and stepping over Chase and Preston who were snoring away on the air bed, Mackenzie smirked snapping a quick picture of the two practically spooning, before tip-toeing to the doorway with Jack. Jack crouched down, turning his head to look at Mackenzie over his shoulder, her eyebrow raised. “Hop on lover” Mackenzie giggled before climbing on, squealing as Jack nearly dropped her before the few stairs down to the living space of her apartment. “s-shhh” Jack laughed out, “if you want me to be quiet then maybe hmm I don't know, don't drop me down the stairs” Mackenzie whispered as she laughed before being thrown up his back to readjust as they made their small descent into the kitchen.

Jack placed her on the counter standing between her legs, Mackenzie wrapped her arms around his neck leaning down to kiss him. “What was that for?” Jack looked at her confused, “I just really love you.” Mackenzie smiled. “I really love you too” Jack smiled, “now what do you wanna eat?” he added.

“Hmm, we could make some cookies?” Mackenzie suggested, “cookies it is” Jack responded before turning to look through the cupboard for the mixing bowl. Mackenzie shuffled off the counter to grab the butter and eggs from the refrigerator before placing them on the counter, she then walked to the cupboards to get the flour and other ingredients.

Jack smiled as she leant over his back to kiss his cheek, “you ready?” Jack whispered trying to be quiet before dropping the bag of chocolate chips on the floor, Mackenzie started giggling before slapping a hand over her mouth. Jack’s eyes widened as he shot them to the living room, where Jaden, Cody and Maddy slept on the couch and the second air bed, he sighed in relief when Cody turned around still snoring. Mackenzie kissed his cheek again before measuring out the sugar, and the butter.

Jack cracked an egg into the bowl before mixing them together as Kenzie measured out the flour, spilling some on the counter she blew it causing a puff of white to spray across Jack's bare chest. Mackenzie giggled again as Jack looked up at her, a butter streak across his forehead, she leaned up licking it off as Jack pulled a disgusted face at her.

Mackenzie bent in half laughing as Jack shushed her, before laughing himself. “s-sshhh” Jack laughed again trying to quieten down, before slipping on some spilt egg and butter, Mackenzie laughing even harder, as Jack groaned quietly on the floor. Mackenzie walked over to help him up before slipping herself, she caught onto the island edge as Jack cackled on the floor at her. The couple stopped in their tracks at the sound of Maddy groaning, but she settled a short while after.

Jack got up first before he reached his hand down to help Kenzie up, as Jack continued mixing the butter, eggs and sugar, Mackenzie cleaned up the floor spillage. “How did you even get it on the floor?” Mackenzie laughed as she threw away the kitchen paper, “I couldn’t even tell you babe” Jack laughed as he added the flour making sure to keep as little off the counter as he could. As Jack was mixing, Mackenzie started putting the things they’d finished with away before lining a baking sheet for Jack.

Jack finished mixing and began making balls of dough placing them on the sheet as Kenzie sprinkled chocolate chips on top, sprinkling a few in her mouth as she went. “You’re meant to be putting those on the cookies not in your mouth” Jack laughed as he finished with the last one. Mackenzie hummed, “but they taste so good!” she pouted as she reached for the tray placing it in the oven.

Jack reached around to cuddle Mackenzie from behind as they swayed back and forth, “I love you” Jack whispered in her ear. “I love you more” Mackenzie whispered back as she turned in his arms, looking up at him. Jack leant down to kiss her, “mmm you taste like chocolate” he laughed. “I wonder why?” she laughed back, “can we go on a drive after this?” she asked giving him the biggest puppy dog eyes, Jack groaned “you know I can never say no to that face”

Mackenzie giggled, “am I your weakness, Jack Hughes?” “Baby, you’re my everything” he laughed as he saw her smile, tears filling her waterline. “don’t make me cry!” she pouted, “why are you being so cute?!” she huffed, Jack laughed harder “I’m sorry, I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to appreciate my girlfriend”

“mhm you should be sorry” she giggled as they both fell into a comfortable silence as they waited for the cookies, “Jack?” Mackenzie whispered after a few minutes. Jack hummed questioningly, “you’re my everything too, I’m glad you went to that party” she spoke as she focused on the oven. “Me too baby” Jack whispered, “how did you even get invited?” Mackenzie wondered. “One of Trevor’s old friends invited him and he asked if Nico, Coley and I could tag along” Jack explained.

Mackenzie sighed, “guess we’ll have to thank Trevor at our wedding now” she joked, “Oh he’s already claimed best man that’s enough” Jack laughed as the oven dinged. Jack grabbed the oven mits to take out the tray he placed them on the cooling rack before turning the oven off, “I’ll wrap some up for us to take on the road, they should be cool soon” Mackenzie said as she placed three in a sandwich bag. Jack led her to the doorway, putting his shoes on and grabbing his hoodie which was draped across the couch. Mackenzie put her shoes on, grabbing her wallet and keys as she unlocked the front door, the couple walked out as Jack locked up.

Jack grabbed Mackenzie's hand as they walked down the hall to the elevator, hitting the ground garage to Kenzie’s car. Mackenzie waved at Fred the security guard, “hey Fred, how are you? How’s Tara?” she spoke as she walked over to him, Jack following behind.

“I’m good thank you sweetheart, Tara’s good, ready to pop any day now” Fred spoke smiling at the young girl. “I bet, Fred, you remember Jack?” Mackenzie smiled, gesturing to the boy behind her. “I sure do, How are you boy? Congrats on the win the other night” Fred smiled at Jack, “Thank you sir” Jack replied politely.

“Oh Fred we made cookies, would you like one?” Mackenzie spoke before unwrapping them, “they’re still warm” she smiled as she passed one to the older man.

“Oh thank you, that’s so kind of you really” Fred praised the girl before taking a bite. “Oh these are delicious, Tara would love these” Fred added.

“I can make some for you to take her after the baby’s here” Mackenzie promised, “we’re heading out for a drive do you want us to bring you anything? I figure you’re on the late shift tonight” Mackenzie asked worried for the older man. “I’m fine, my break is soon sweetheart but thank you, i’ll let you head off. but it was lovely to see you, send Kaylee my best” Fred replied as he walked away.

“I’ve known Fred since the first night Kaylee and I moved into the building, he helped build our dressers” Mackenzie explained as they walked to her car, Jack climbing in the driver's seat. “I remember meeting him briefly in the hallway one evening as I was coming up to yours” Jack thought. “He told me about that, told me to be careful letting strange men into our apartment late at night. I assured him we’d be fine, but I think he still worries about Kay and I.” Mackenzie replied as Jack began driving on the roads.

“He’s just looking out for you, I imagine he’s just worried about men going into your apartment late at night, never knowing who’s around” Jack suggested. “He gave Kay and I an alarm to pull if something was wrong and it would alert him or whoever was on shift to check out our apartment” Mackenzie informed Jack, “Like a panic alarm?” he asked.

“Yeah i guess, there’s two of them, one by the front door and the other in between our rooms in the hallway” she informed the hockey player. “in case you ever need to use them” she added. Mackenzie reached forward for her phone to play some music as they drove, singing and dancing along, Jack drummed his fingers against the steering wheel, dancing at the stop signs, the car filled with laughter as they watched the building and lights of New Jersey flash by eating their slightly warm cookies. “Do you wanna head back baby? it’s 3:30 AM” Jack asked, frowning as he didn’t get a reply, he turned the radio down before glancing over to find Mackenzie asleep against the window clutching her half eaten cookie in her hand. Jack smiled, he would never get over the feeling he got everytime he looked at her, and he never wanted to. Jack chuckled before turning around and heading back to her apartment, thinking to himself how blessed he was.

Mackenzie looked at Ethan confused, “Sky? What about Sky?” she asked. Ethan sighed, “do you like her?” Jack asked as he sat next to Mackenzie, wrapping an arm around her and kissing the side of her head. “I think so?” Ethan replied, “what do you mean you think so?” Mackenzie asked gently. “Well I’m not sure if I like her or if I like the idea of someone like her.” Ethan replied. “I like being around her, she’s funny, smart, caring, beautiful but it feels weird as I don’t want to overstep any boundaries” Ethan added as he picked at the skin around his thumb.

“Ethan, you certainly wouldn’t be overstepping. Yes, she’s my little sister and we’re protective of each other. I mean can you really blame us for that? I only want the absolute best for her, and I couldn’t think of anyone better for her. I know she’s safe with you, and I know you’ll treat her right. So if you’re looking for my blessing, you already had it” Mackenzie said softly, “tell you what, once we’re all back from worlds, Kenz and I will help you set up a date” Jack promised.

Ethan sighed “yeah ok” before standing, “oh and Ethan” Mackenzie called as he walked away, “yeah?” he replied, “call it sisters intuition but I know she likes you too” Kenzie reassured. Ethan smiled before walking downstairs, “awww he looks exactly like you did” Kenzie cooed, pinching Jack’s cheek. “I did not look like that” Jack huffed, “yes you did, following me around like a little love sick puppy. It was so cute!!” Mackenzie cooed.

Jack shook his head and stood up, “come on, there’s a bed and a movie that awaits us” Jack held his hand out to help her up.

“Just a movie? bummer” Kenzie sighed, “well if you’re a good girl, I might give you more” Jack smirked. “aren’t I always a good girl Jacky?” Kenzie pouted before she was thrown over Jack’s shoulder and heading to his bedroom, Kenzie leaned her hand down to slap his ass, “hey!” Jack laughed, “hmm can’t help it” Kenzie laughed.

Jack kicked the door open, slamming it against the wall, “damn, what did the door ever do to you?” Kenzie laughed. Jack chuckled, before kicking it shut, turning Mackenzie so she could slide down and lean against it.

Jack locked the door before looking at her smiling.

“you’re so beautiful” Jack whispered, Mackenzie felt butterflies swirling around in her stomach. “And you my love, are perfect” Kenzie whispered back, nothing but love filling her brown eyes.

Jack leaned down, placing his pillowy soft lips against hers, before pulling away slowly. “I could kiss you for the rest of my life and never get over the feeling of it” Jack whispered again, before turning and heading for the bed. Mackenzie felt the soft mattress against her back, looking up at Jack, she felt a warmth swell in her chest.

“I love you so much” Mackenzie spoke softly, Jack beamed at her, “I love you so much more” he replied in a heartbeat. Jack leaned down to kiss her again, placing one hand on her cheek, the other used to hold himself up. Mackenzie carded her hand through the brown hairs at the nape of his neck, tugging gently.

Jack slowly licked across her bottom lip, Mackenzie opening her mouth immediately to give him access. Kenzie reached down to tug on Jack's shirt, Jack pulling away to discard it, before returning to her lips, slowly moving across her cheek to her neck.

Mackenzie moaned softly as he sucked a faint hickey into her sweet spot. Jack licked a stripe down the side of her neck, before coming up to whisper in her ear. “You’re my gorgeous girl aren’t you” Jack tugged his teeth on her ear lobe, “mhmm I’m all yours Jacky, always yours” Kenzie breathed back.

Jack began kissing her neck again as Mackenzie reached for his swim shorts, “slow down baby, I gotta return the favour from the other day” Jack whispered. “You still remember that?” Kenzie groaned, “how could I forget angel?” Jack laughed as he sat up, reaching for her shirt, Mackenzie lifted her arms up, throwing the shirt across the room. Jack reached behind her to untie her bikini top before throwing it in the same direction.

Jack sat back to admire the view, “you’re perfect baby, fucking perfect” he praised as he leaned forward sucking a nipple into his mouth. Mackenzie moaned in surprise, “O-oh”. Jack then moved across to give her other nipple the same attention. “Jack” Mackenzie breathed out, causing the boy to pull away, “What do you want, Kenz?” he asked. “You know what I want, baby but you said not yet” Kenzie replied pouting, “you’ll get what you want soon, now be a good girl and tell me what you want” Jack demanded gently. “You, I want anything you give me.” Mackenzie pleaded.

Jack didn’t reply audibly instead opting to respond with his actions, as he kissed his way down her sternum, to her stomach and ending at the waistband of her shorts. Mackenzie wriggled her hips impatiently, as Jack removed her shorts and bikini bottoms.

He began kissing down her thighs and back up the inside going higher and higher before Mackenzie muttered out “n-no” immediately Jack stopped, looking up at her with wide eyes filled with worry and panic. “Jack, Jack it’s ok. I’m fine, I promise” Mackenzie reached for his hand. “I-I’m sorry, what did I do wrong?” Jack apologised.

As Mackenzie was doing that, Jack began changing the sheets and putting on some shorts. Jack sat back on the bed as Mackenzie appeared, dressing herself in one of Jack’s shirts and climbing into bed with him, snuggling up as a little spoon. The couple kissed, said I love you and drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, Mackenzie was awoken by the sunlight shining on her pillow. Jack must have forgotten to draw the curtains last night. Squinting, Mackenzie turned to see the TV still on asking if they were still watching. Jack was still fast asleep, soft snores escaping his mouth as he pulled Kenzie closer to him.

Kenzie leaned up pressing kisses to his neck and jaw, sucking softly as she moved her hand to his morning wood.

Jack groaned, furrowing his eyebrows, as he slowly opened his eyes. “Morning pretty boy, after all we did last night and you’re still hard for me hmm” Mackenzie smirked as she moved across to kiss him.

A knock on the door interrupted their moment, Jack groaned before pulling the covers up around his waist.

“Come in” Mackenzie called out, before realising the door was still locked. She climbed out to unlock it, “hey babes” Kaylee greeted, walking into the room. “get ready, we have an appointment at 10:30” Kaylee announced before heading to the closet to steal a shirt. “What appointment?” Kenzie asked, “for our tattoos, I found a great artist” Kaylee replied before leaving.

Jack furrowed his eyebrows, “you’re getting a tattoo?” he asked, confused. “Yeah I’ve been thinking about getting another one for a while. It's half a lion's face, and half flowers” Mackenzie explained, pulling up a picture of the design to show Jack.

“Oh it’s so cool! I like the mane” Jack exclaimed, “do you think it’ll go with my other one” Mackenzie explained, holding the phone against the back of her arm where three butterflies lay inked on it, flying up toward her chest twirling to the front of her arm.

“I think so” Jack hummed as he climbed out of bed, heading to the shower. Mackenzie quickly got changed and headed in behind him to brush her teeth and apply a small amount of makeup. “I love you” Mackenzie blew him a kiss, “I love you too, keep me updated” Jack blew her a kiss back as she left to meet Skylar and Kaylee.

Mackenzie entered the kitchen to greet the girls, “are we ready?” Mackenzie asked as she stood in the doorway. “yep, lead the way sweet cheeks” Kaylee smiled, as Mackenzie slipped on her crocs before heading out to Quinn’s car. Kaylee climbed into the driver's seat, Kenzie in the front passenger and Skylar in the back.

“What tattoo are you getting?” Kenzie asked as Kaylee backed out the driveway, “We are getting matching ones” she replied smiling. “Are we getting you keep me safe, and you keep me wild?” Kenzie smiled, “we are indeed, i’m not sure where to get mine” Kaylee pondered. “I’m getting it on my ribs” Kenzie smiled.

Skylar frowned, “aren’t they still broken?” she asked. “no it’s been 3 weeks they’re healed now, just still a little sore at times” Mackenzie replied.

20 minutes later, the girls were pulling up to the tattoo shop, smiling as they climbed out and headed inside. “Hi, my friend and I have an appointment booked” Kaylee said to the man at the desk. “no problem, what’s the name under the booking?” the man reached for a black notebook, “Kaylee” Kaylee replied.

The man looked through the pages before stopping, “how are we spelling Kaylee?” he asked. “K-a-y-l-e-e” Kaylee spelled out, “ah there you are, my apologies I was looking for an l-e-y” he laughed, the girls smiled at him. “don’t worry, it happens all the time.” Kaylee smiled.

“If you and your friend could both fill out these forms and show me your ID that would be great” He replied as he handed two forms to Kaylee. Kenzie fished for her ID, handing it to the man before grabbing a pen to fill out the paperwork.

“I think an early happy birthday is in order” the man smiled as he handed Kenzie her ID back before looking at Kaylee’s. “Oh and to you as well, it seems” he laughed. “Thank you” Mackenzie replied as she passed the form back to him and headed to the back room, Kaylee following as Skylar sat in the waiting area.

“Hi, I’m Sonia. You’re here for the you keep me tattoos right?” a lady, the girls now knew as Sonia said. “Yes, I’m Kaylee and this is Mackenzie.” Kaylee replied. “awesome, so who is safe and who is wild?” Sonia asked. “I’m having safe” Kenzie replied, “and I’m having wild” Kaylee replied.

“Okay, I drew a couple different sizes and fonts out for you to pick from. Now for Mackenzie because you’re naturally leaning on the smaller side. I’d recommend this size” Sonia pointed, “I think we can just say she’s tiny” Kaylee laughed. Mackenzie agreed to the sizing choice in a cursive font.

Mackenzie slid the shirt up, tucking it into her bra, as Sonia prepared the stencil. “I think it looks better curving round your ribs” Sonia suggested. “Yeah i think the curve is better, maybe a little lower” Mackenzie voiced as she observed in the mirror. “Here?” Sonia asked and Mackenzie nodded.

“Okay, now the ribs are one of the more tender areas to tattoo. So I will start with a small line, just so you can get a feel of what it feels like” Sonia spoke as she prepared her equipment. “Okay sounds good” Kenzie replied as Kaylee sat down next to her, grabbing her hand to hold in support.

As Sonia began tattooing, Kaylee started talking to Kenzie to distract her. “So what’s left to do to prepare for the girls?” she asked. “Erm well we need to make up the air beds, I need to go grocery shopping as we’re running low. Make space in the spare closet for their clothes and help Jack pack” Kenzie summarised her list.

“Maybe I should text the boys to make the beds or at least inflate them for us” Kaylee suggested pulling out her phone. “Yeah, Jack knows how to do it” Kenzie replied.

After tattooing Mackenzie, it was Kaylee’s turn. Kaylee chose the same font but having it slightly longer to fit better across her ribs. The girls chatted to make the time go quicker, as Kaylee was finishing up, Sonia began pulling out stencils for Kenzie’s lion.

Sonia placed the chosen stencil on Kenzie’s arm as she laid down again, Kaylee left to go check on Skylar and bring Kenzie a drink.

“So how long have you two known each other?” Sonia asked to break the silence, “We’ve known each other since we were 3 months old, our moms met at a birthing class' Mackenzie smiled. “Oh wow, so a long time then” Sonia joked.

“Yeah and she still won’t leave” Mackenzie laughed back. “So does this tattoo have any meaning to you?” Sonia asked. “Yeah so the lilies are my boyfriends birth flower and the lion is my favourite animal” Mackenzie replied. “Oh you have a boyfriend?” Sonia asked as she got more ink, “yeah, we’ve been together for nearly 3 years now” Mackenzie smiled. Sonia smiled as she began detailing the flowers.

Shortly after Kaylee’s return, Kenzie was finished. Kenzie stood up and looked into the mirror, “Oh it’s so good! Thank you so much!” she exclaimed happily. After paying and saying their goodbyes, the girls headed back to Quinn’s car, driving back to the lake house.

Pulling up on the driveway, the girls noticed Jack and Trevor sat on the front porch. Mackenzie climbed out “missed me that much huh?” she teased laughing as Jack's head shot up. “Hey baby” he spoke, walking to greet her at the top of the steps. Mackenzie leaning up to kiss him, “mm hey lover boy” she smiled into the kiss.

“Ugh get a room” Skylar rolled her eyes jokingly, “mm ok” Jack said as he threw Kenzie over his shoulder causing her to squeal. “JACK PUT ME DOWN” Mackenzie huffed, “hmmmm no” he replied as he walked into the house. “JACK I SWEAR TO GOD” Mackenzie huffed, “ok, ok” Jack whispered, placing her on the ground in the living room.

“Show us your new tats then babe” Jack smirked, Mackenzie showed the lion first, “aww it’s so cute! Why did you get lilies?” Jack asked with interest. “Well lilies are your birth flower” Mackenzie smiled, “you got them for me?” Jack's smile widened, “yeah of course I did” Mackenzie replied smiling at him, “and then this one” she added as she lifted her shirt.

“hmm you look hot with tattoos” Jack hummed. “Oh is that so?” Mackenzie teased, “mhm” was his reply. “Well too bad it’s movie night” Kenzie hummed as she walked away.

Jack sighed jokingly as he walked into the kitchen to make popcorn. Mackenzie gathering blankets and the Umich boys. They all spread out on the couches and floor, sipping their various drinks.

The girls scrolled through netflix before choosing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Quinn sighed, “really, again?” he asked. Kaylee giggled, “what’s wrong with Harry Potter?” she questioned. “Nothings wrong with it but we’ve watched this one 4 times already, choose another one” Quinn laughed. Skylar sighed, choosing the goblet of fire instead. “Better?” she asked before cuddling into Ethan’s side.

Quinn sighed, shaking his head, “hey if we have to watch fast and furious, you can watch harry potter” Kaylee sassed. Mackenzie smirked before mouthing mom to Jack who laughed as he walked back into the room. Mackenzie opened her arms making grabby hands at him as he walked towards her. “Trev, where's my cuddle?” Kaylee pouted as she plopped down next to him, “Erm you didn’t ask?” Trevor replied, opening his arms as Quinn pressed play. “Baby?” Mackenzie whispered as she snuggled into Jack's neck, “yeah?” he replied.

“Did you inflate the air beds for us?” Mackenzie mumbled, “Yeah Lukey helped, Quinn made them up for you” Jack mumbled as he kissed her head. “Thank you, I’m gonna miss you so much when you’re gone” Mackenzie sighed, feeling herself tear up, “I’m gonna miss you too baby, but it’s only 6 days and then you’ll be back in my arms hmm? and i’ll give you all the cuddles you want” Jack reassured her, “Promise?” Mackenzie looked up at him with puppy dog eyes as she lifted her pinky, “I promise” Jack spoke lovingly as he linked his pinky with hers, before they turned to watch the movie.

Summer Of Love:- Warm Summer Nights

Jack and Mackenzie were lost in their own world, staring out at the horizon. Kaylee, Skylar and the boys were still playing in the ocean, Mackenzie swore their laughter could be heard for miles.

“You sure you don’t wanna swim? I don’t mind standing here” Mackenzie said softly. “I’m sure baby, we’ll probably have to call them out soon anyways” Jack mumbled back, leaning down and placing his head in the crook of Kenzie’s neck.

“Hmm you make it sound like they’re our kids” Mackenzie laughed. “We might as well be honorary mom and dad” Jack laughed back. “Nah that’s Quinn and Kaylee’s job” Mackenzie giggled, turning in Jack's arms pouting her lips out for a kiss. Jack leaned down to fulfil her request, kissing her gently and slowly, a kiss full of love, however it was cut short as the couple felt water splashing them. Jack glanced over Mackenzie’s shoulder, “LUKE WARREN HUGHES, WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT SPLASHING?” Kaylee shouted.

“See told you she was mom” Mackenzie laughed. “HEY GUYS WE SHOULD HEAD IN NOW, THE SUNS ABOUT TO START SETTING” Jack shouted, Mackenzie wincing due to the volume. “Sorry baby” Jack kissed her cheek, before grabbing her hand and leading her back to their stuff. Jack reached to grab his shirt, pulling it over his head, Mackenzie went to grab her shirt and shorts.

“Here babe, I’ll help” Jack said, leaning down so she had somewhere to balance, Mackenzie placed her casted arm on his shoulder, using the other to pull her shorts up. Jack grabbed her waist as she wobbled, “you ok?” Jack whispered.

“Mmm” Mackenzie hummed, after zipping them up. Jack helped her put her shirt on before turning around to start packing stuff away. Quinn’s phone was still connected to the speaker and whilst some songs it played were questionable in Mackenzie’s mind, it was a good playlist.

Cheerleader by OMI started playing and Mackenzie couldn’t help but dance along as she held out towels for everyone as they passed her, Kaylee stopping next to her and began dancing as well, Skylar joining in shortly afterwards.

“Is there anything they don’t dance to?” Ethan asked no one in particular, “nope, not really. They were dancing to Adele the other morning” Luke laughed. Jack and Trevor shook their heads at them, before heading to the car to load it up.

The girls hadn’t even realised the boys had gone as the song changed to toxic pony mashup. Kaylee twirling Mackenzie as Skylar swayed by herself, Mackenzie reaching her arm out inviting Skylar to a twirl as well.

Jack and Trevor walked back down the beach to collect the last few bags and the girls. Trevor pulled his phone out to record them as Mackenzie twirled her hips up against Kaylee, rotating them, both girls laughing at each other.

“Well that took a turn I wasn’t expecting” Trevor laughed, “nothing surprises me with these two anymore” Jack laughed as he began to approach them. “Come on troublemaker it’s time to go” Jack switched off the speaker, hearing whines of protest from the girls. “You can dance back at the house” Trevor promised, which seemed to satisfy them as they began following Jack and Trevor, each grabbing a bag although Jack insisted on carrying Mackenzie’s.

Treading steadily up the sandbank, they finally made it to the cars. Quinn was already sitting in the driver's seat, “I’m coming, I’m coming Quinny be patient” Kaylee huffed out before stumbling into Trevor who was quick to steady her with an arm around her waist, “careful there pumpkin” he smirked.

“Oh bite me” Kaylee joked before carrying on toward the car. “I mean if you insist, I’m sure we can arrange something” Trevor spoke back as he followed her.

Mackenzie giggled, “Jacky why don’t you bite me?” she pouted. Skylar faked a gag, “okayyy on that note i’m gonna go find Eth.” The couple watched as Skylar walked away, “hmm didn’t know you were into biting, baby” Jack smirked. “I'm into a lot of things pretty boy” Mackenzie smirked, leaning up to give him a quick peck on the lips before walking toward the car.

Jack striding to open her door for her before climbing into the driver's seat. “Everyone buckled?” Jack asked before starting the car, “yes dad” Ethan replied. Jack reversed out of the parking space heading for the road home, Quinn’s car following behind.

After pulling up to the house, the boys all climbed out and began unloading again, as the girls walked into the kitchen to start on dinner. “what are we thinking?” Kaylee asked as she scanned the cupboards for ingredients, Mackenzie opened the refrigerator, “hmm I’m thinking something light since we had lunch so late, we could make caesar salad and chicken pesto pasta?” Mackenzie suggested.

“Sounds good to me, I'll start on the salad,” Kaylee replied, “and I'll start on the pasta” Mackenzie added. “What do you need me to do?” Skylar asked, Kenzie looked over her shoulder, “nothing for now pickle, why don’t you sit down and tell us the tea with you and Ethan” she spoke.

Skylar rolled her eyes as her cheeks flushed pink, “oooo someone’s blushinggggg, reminds me of you kenz” Kaylee teased. “Me? no no no, i remember you blushing constantly about bitchy barbie” Mackenzie shot back, Skylar furrowed her eyebrows, “bitchy barbie?”

Mackenzie gave Kaylee a look, silently asking her if she could tell Skylar, when Kaylee nodded Mackenzie started to reply. “Kaylee met a girl called Mae last year at a party—“ Mackenzie started before being interrupted by Kaylee, “We’d seen each other in passing a few times before then, but we hit it off at the party, I kissed her and we exchanged numbers. Although the next day on campus people were saying that I’d forced myself on her, which wasn’t the case. It was then that I'd learnt people had seen us together and Mae wasn’t exactly open about her sexuality which is okay, I’m not one to judge about it, she blew me off and acted like i was some creep” Kaylee finished as she placed the lettuce in a bowl.

“Not only that, but she had the audacity to come to you for help in coming out, AND to ask you out “properly” after everything she had done” Kenzie added as she started frying the chicken.

“Wow, that’s rough, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. What did you do?” Skylar inquired. “Honestly not much, there wasn’t really anything i could do aside from ignore it, a few people who saw us at the party stuck up for me and explained what happened, not that anyone really believed them but i’m thankful they tried. you’re sister however is a different story” Kaylee laughed.

“What did you do?” Skylar sighed, Mackenzie smirked “oh not much.” “not much? you drenched her in kool aid in front of everyone, and switched her lactose pills for tic tacs” Kaylee laughed. “hey i made sure she wasn’t deathly allergic to dairy before i did that, i'm not a monster.” Mackenzie defended.

“I still don’t know how you managed to do that” Kaylee giggled, “I’m cute, plus Spencer owed me a favour after I caught him trying to sleep with Miss Ramsay to get his grades up” Mackenzie laughed at the look on Kaylee’s face. “no— Miss Ramsay? seriously?” Kaylee deadpanned.

“Anyways that’s pretty tame for you Kenz, remember when she hid shrimp in this girl's car and locker because she was bullying me?” Skylar cackled “now that, that was genius” Kaylee laughed back, “like i said i'm cute, boys can never say no to this face” Mackenzie giggled, “it’s true, you could drop a pen and half the football team would be there to offer you theirs or pick it up for you, you wouldn’t even need to say anything” Kaylee laughed harder.

“So tell us about you and Ethan then sunshine” Kaylee teased. “There's not much to tell at the moment, we go for these late night walks around the lake, sometimes we sit at the docks and talk about anything and everything but that’s about it” Skylar summarised.

Suddenly Mackenzie’s phone started ringing from one of the beach bags in the hallway. “JAAAACKKKK!” Mackenzie shouted, “yeah babe?” Jack’s faint voice could be heard, “can you get that for me?” Kenzie shouted back, “yeah babe, one sec” Jack jogged into the hallway, digging around in the bag for her phone, “ITS OLIVIA” he shouted back before answering.

“Hey gorgeous” Olivia’s voice spoke through the phone, “Liv please i’m a happily taken man” Jack joked back, “oh— hey Jack” Olivia laughed, “hey Liv, Kenz is in the kitchen, i’ll pass her the phone and leave you be” Jack spoke back as he made his way to the kitchen himself. “Oh no worries I actually wanted to talk to you both, is Kaylee there as well?” Olivia replied.

“yeah she’s here, one sec lemme put you on speaker. Skylar’s here as well” Jack warned, “Sky? Would you mind clearing out for me please?” Olivia asked. “yeah of course, i’ll go see if they need any more help outside” Skylar stood up and began walking away, hearing Olivia call out a thank you.

“Liv what’s up? Is everyone ok?” Kaylee asked as she walked to the refrigerator. “Everyone is okay, although Cody has been pouting and looking a little lost without his “favourite children” but I was calling to update y’all on our situation” Olivia paused, “and i gotta say it’s not looking good.”

Jack furrowed his brows whilst Mackenzie and Kaylee sighed, “what happened, sweets?” Kaylee asked as Mackenzie poured the pasta into the boiling water adding salt. “He came back from the boys' weekend, and went straight to bed, the next day I tried being dominant like you suggested but it lasted about 2 minutes before he flipped us round” Olivia spoke to the group.

“Liv, I’m gonna ask you something and in no way am I trying to be insulting or disrespectful” Jack spoke thoughtfully as he sat at the breakfast bar, “okay” Olivia mumbled out. “Are you happy with everything else in the relationship? Is this the only issue?” Jack asked.

“yeah everything else is going great! Aside from the bedroom issues, he’s the perfect guy” Olivia spoke out, “but?” Kenzie asked. “But like I told you guys it’s like the passion is gone, and I'm not sure how to fix it” Olivia sighed, “why don’t you talk to him? Or maybe I can talk to him?” Jack suggested.

“It's ok Jack, I'll talk to him. I’m not exactly sure what to say but I'll figure it out. If i need any help i’ll let you guys know, oh shoot Maddy’s here I gotta go pack. I'll see y’all in a few days. I love you all” Olivia rushed out and then hung up.

Jack looked at the girls, “that was strange right?” he asked them. “yeah, she usually doesn’t hang up until Kenz and I have said our own goodbyes”

Kaylee furrowed her brows as she added cucumber to the salad. “You know what, Mads texted me this morning saying she was going to visit her sister in Manhattan today and she’d be staying the night” Kenzie frowned, “so why would she be at Olivia’s?” Kaylee questioned. “Maybe she’s going later?” Jack suggested.

Kaylee shrugged, “yeah, maybe.” “Jack, can you drain the pasta for me?” Kenzie asked. “yeah sure, LUKE!!” Jack shouted as he stood up. “WHAT?!” Luke shouted back. “CAN YOU GATHER THE BOYS, DINNER IS READY?” Jack replied. “YEAH OKAY” Luke’s muffled voice carried through the kitchen.

“I forgot how much you two shout” Kaylee laughed. “my poor eardrums” Kenzie sighed dramatically. “mhm what about my poor eardrums listening to you two singing” Jack laughed. “I am highly offended right now” Kaylee gasped dramatically.

Kaylee walked away with the salad bowl, Kenzie following behind with the pasta, leaving Jack alone, he turned to grab two drinks. A gatorade for himself and a cherry cola for Kenzie, before joining everyone at the dining table.

Jack pulled a chair with Kenzie on his right and Trevor on his left. “Thank you for dinner girls, it looks delicious” Quinn thanked, a few mumbles of agreement and other thank yous carried around the room. “Your welcome boys, tuck in” Kaylee gestured to the bowls.

“Kenzie, where did you learn to cook like this?” Trevor groaned out with a mouthful of pasta. “Well our mom is a nurse and growing up she’d have to leave a lot for night shifts leaving Sky and I alone. A few nights we’d have dinner at Kaylee’s but for the most part I'd cook dinner for us. It started out with just boxed mac and cheese but I watched and followed the food network until I could actually make edible food” Mackenzie laughed as she sipped her cola.

“I used to ask Kaylee’s mom to make extras in case it was bad.” Skylar laughed. “I’ve even taught Jack how to cook a few meals.” Kenzie added, glancing at Jack. “Yeah, I can successfully cook chicken alfredo now” Jack smiled smugly, “he cooked a very nice lasagna for our anniversary last month” Kenzie smiled back.

Dinner continued on as usual, full of stories and laughter. Quinn, Jack and Trevor offered to clean up the dishes, whilst the Umich boys and Skylar headed outside. Kaylee turned to Kenzie smiling, “you do realise Jack facetimed me when he made that lasagna.” “I figured he’d had help, but it was still sweet he tried, it could have been the worst lasagna in the world and I'd still eat it with a smile on my face” Mackenzie smiled.

Kaylee and Mackenzie continued chatting amongst themselves as the boys finished up in the kitchen, Jack was the first to appear. “Q and Trev are just finishing up, do you wanna head upstairs? maybe watch a movie?” Jack asked. Mackenzie nodded as Kaylee wiggled her eyebrows, “behave yourself” Mackenzie laughed before leaving. “I always behave myself, it’s you who doesn’t” Kaylee shouted back, “You’re not wrong” Kenzie shouted back as she laughed.

Jack shook his head, as they headed upstairs. Approaching Jack's room, the pair saw Ethan sitting in the doorway of his bedroom, looking a little lost. “Ethan? you ok?” Kenzie asked as she sat next to him. Ethan sighed, shaking his head, “yeah… kinda? I'm not sure.” Mackenzie frowned, “what’s up?” “Skylar” Ethan replied.

Summer of Love:- Update

hey lovelies, i just thought i’d pop on here and give you an update!

I’m sorry for the lack of content recently, i am due to go on holiday for 2 weeks next sunday so i have been writing a tonne of chapters to publish whilst i am away.

I will try to upload them everyday or every other day whilst i am away, some may be shorter than others or even just be instagram style posts so i apologise for that but i’m trying my best.

i have also been writing a new series which i plan to post about in the next coming week or so, thank you for your support and understanding during this time 🫶🏼

Bad Liar

It was just another regular day: wake up, gym, school, than hanging out with my best friend Faith while Ethan is at hockey practice. Faith and I went to a random Starbucks in Ann Arbour and did some studying until I noticed Ethan’s practice was ending soon.

We packed up our stuff and I drove Faith back to our apartment before making my way to Ethan’s. As I drove to my boyfriends house, my phone buzzed. At the night red light I looked at the notification and saw that it was from Instagram. Thinking the notification was just another like on the picture I posted of Ethan and I this morning I didn’t even read what it said before turning my phone back over and putting it on the seat.

Once I pulled into the driveway, I pulled out my phone to read some texts I missed on the ride over when I realized the Instagram notification was actually a dm. I unlocked my phone and clicked on the message from the Blonde haired, blue eyed, verified Instagram account.

@ heyyitskaela : I just wanted to start by saying how sorry I am! Last weekend I slept with your boyfriend. He told me he was single, but my friend sent me your recent post so I know that isn’t the case.

I was in shock. I starred at my phone reading the message over and over. Of course I didn’t want to believe it because Ethan was in the road last weekend and he just wouldn’t have time and he hasn’t been acting weird this week, but a part of me believes her.

I brush the tear that escaped my eye as I went through this girl’s instagram pictures. She is an Instagram model, she is so pretty she gets paid for it. I was insecure, hurt and embarrassed. Ethan doesn’t follow her but has liked some of her pictures.

I continued to sit in the driveway in my car as I now stare at the front door. I’m contemplating what I’m going to do or say. So many emotions and thoughts run through my body.

The courage finally took over when Ethan open the front door to his house. I put my head down and acted like I was looking for something on the passenger side as I rubbed the tears away. Ethan stood barefoot on his front porch as I got out of my car. I kept my head looking anywhere but to him as I made my way over.

“What’s wrong?” Ethan asks as I got a little closer, I didn’t have to be looking at him to feel his smile disappear.

“Hmm” I say followed by a sniffle finally looking at him

“You’re crying. What happened?” He says bringing me in for a hug. I let him hug me but don’t hug him back as the tears finally stopped threatening to fall from my eyes and I now just feel the numbness take over. I don’t know why I believe this random girl but I do.

“I’m sick” I lied, wanting to just go on as normal but cautiously until there is proof. I pushed back from him and looked away.

“Nauseous?”

“Something like that” I reply

“Well let’s get you to bed” he says putting his arm around me placing his hand in the small of my back as we walk inside.

“Hey y/n” Mark smiles from across the room as I entered the house. His smile fades when he sees the redness around my face, “you guys o-“ Mark begins to ask cautiously but Ethan is quick to reply before he could even finish

“We are good” he says quickly, “she’s sick”

“I have to pee” I say to Ethan as a step away from him then making my way to the bathroom. I pulled my phone out and messaged the Kaela girl back to try and get more information

@ yourusername : when did this happen? where?

@ heyyitskaela : last weekend in Madison after the game.

@ heyyitskaela : his team was staying at the same hotel as I was and my friends and I started talking to them. They snuck us into their rooms and he asked me to go back to my room

@ heyyitskaela : I don’t want to pin him as the bad guy but he was the one that came up to our group because he said he followed me on Instagram… He unfollowed me the next morning though

@ yourusername : do you have any proof at all?

@ heyyitskaela : just my word

@ heyyitskaela : I’d say ask some of his teammates but they would probably cover for him… but they know

Surprisingly I able able to contain myself and not allow the tears to fall from my eyes. I sigh reading the messages thinking I should have texted her in the car before coming in. But the quick interaction between Mark and Ethan had me eager to know.

I left the bathroom and into the kitchen to see Mark cooking supper. I make my way in and sit at one of the barstools. The screech on the floor from the stool makes Mark turn to face me.

“Hey, you alright?” He asks

“Yeah, I actually have to ask you something” I say. The look of worry takes over Mark’s face and I just know, “Did-“ I start to ask but stop when Marks eyes wonder to meet someone else’s. I turn to see Ethan leaning on the archway.

“Can we talk?” I say asking Ethan since I wouldn’t be able to ask Mark without him being there. I didn’t even wait for his answer, I just got up off the barstool and made my way up the stairs and into his room. He followed close behind shutting the door behind him as he entered the room. He just looks at me waiting for me to start the conversation.

“I’m going to ask you something, but you have to tell me the truth. Don’t spare my feelings, just tell me the truth” I begin and he nods taking a step towards me, “are you cheating on me?”

“No” he simply says. I blink hard and fast a few times, “I’m not cheating on you” he continues and my tears form in my eyes again. This time anger starts to take over.

“Let me rephrase that, did you cheat on me?” I ask trying hard to compress my emotions.

“Oh course not!” Ethan says moving in close to wrap me into a hug but with one arm I place my hand on his chest to hold him back while I step back from him. “What is wrong Y/n?” He asks looking insulted, the tears begin to flow from my eyes immediately staining my cheeks.

“You’re a fucking liar” I say followed by a sniffle. I watch as Ethan takes a seat on his bed. I continue to just watch his behaviour. He sits there with his head in his hands then he runs his hand through his hair. He looks at the wall beside him, as I hear a sniffle escape his nose before I speak up again, “she told me Ethan” I say.

He finally stands from the bed and stands in front of me. He’s eyes red from the tears. Before speaking he rubs his eyes the says, “I’m so sorry”. “Please-“ he continues but I interrupt him by impulsively slapping him across the face. He clutched his cheek as he looks at the ground.

“Where you going to tell me? Or where you going to try and do it next time you go away? Or have you been doing it every time you go away?” I ramble on through my tears. Ethan finally looks up at me and tries to grab my hand but I pull it away.

“I love you Y/n. I don’t know what I was thinking”

“You told her you were single. So it couldn’t have been an accident. Cheating is one thing but telling someone your single to be able to cheat is another thing”

“I know but please just hear me out”

“I can’t Ethan, because I’ll want to forgive you” I say as tears continue to stream from my face, “I don’t think I can forgive you”

I move past him and walk towards his bedroom door but he grabs my hand, “I never meant to hurt you” he tells me but I pull my hand away.

I continue walking out the door but turn to look at him one last time to tell him, “and yet you did, then try to lie about it. Good thing you’re a bad liar or our whole relationship going forward would be a lie”.

With that I turn back towards the door and make my way out of the house without saying another word.
