Self Love
Aesthetic goals: I wanted the tree in the center to be the main visual aspect so I chose brighter and warmer colors for it compared to the background.
Conceptual goals: This is based on a location from one of my favorite games. Since we're meant to keep this as a keepsake I wanted something that related to that game.
Course inspiration: I was inspired by the still-life assignment (natural arrangement of objects).

Spreading Love
Aesthetic goals: I chose primarily blue colors because she is from an area where water is a central focus to the nation.
Conceptual goals: I chose to draw this character because they're from a game my friend really loves (the same game my self love piece is based off of).
Course inspiration: I was inspired by the portraiture assignments and the section on imperial yellow from the book.

"Traces of our aversion to night and blackness can be found across cultures and eras. Nyx, the ancient Greek goddess of night, is the daughter of Chaos; her own children include sleep, but also, more ominously, anguish, discord, and death. Nott, a night goddess from Germanic and Scandinavian traditions, wears black and rides in a chariot drawn by a dark horse, pulling darkness across the sky like a drape. Through fear, pitch black has also laid symbolic claim to death, which is, in the most desolate view, a night without end. Both Yama, the Hindu god of death, and Anubis, his ancient Egyptian counterpart, have black skin. Kali, the fearsome Hindu warrior goddess of both creation and destruction, whose name means ā€œShe who is blackā€ in Sanskrit, is usually depicted with dark skin, wearing a necklace of skulls, and brandishing swords and a severed head." (280-281) I enjoyed this short snippet because I always find it interesting to learn about different deities in other cultures. I think it's neat that there is a common denominator amongst these examples of gods and goddesses representing death, destruction, and chaos. That common denominator is the pitch black, as described in the section.

When thinking about 2023 from my own lens, I decided it was a year in which I spent more quality one-on-one time with the important people in my life. I decided to draw a more quiet table setting because of this, with just two chairs to represent that. I drew a birthday cake because it was recently my birthday, but also because everyone has a birthday every year. I also drew a pile of presents, designer purse, and added some wine glasses for the sense of luxury. The pile of presents also represents how I think a lot of holidays have become commercialized in an effort from large corporations to incentivize commercialism and spending money. I thought it might be cool to add a background using stuff from the magazine so I added some nature-y stuff. The golf gloves are supposed to be a sun with the face being the center of the sun. This is my morphed and animated object. I then added my car keys, some money, and a tv remote to also add to the sense of commercialism. They also represent my 2023 year because I got a car this year, hence the car keys, I've been working a lot, hence the money, and I've spent more time than I normally would watching movies and sports on the TV thanks to the person I started dating this year.

"William, a small ceramic statuette of a hippopotamus, can now be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, around 6,000 miles and some 3,500 years away from his point of origin: the banks of the Nile in Egypt. Although to our eyes he cuts rather a beautiful figure, with his blue-green glazed skin decorated with flowers, to his creators he would have seemed far less benevolent. Hippos were dangerous creatures, both in real life and in mythology, where they might upset your journey to the underworld" (pg 196)
I thought this part was interesting because of the bit about hippos in Egyptian mythology. I've always found mythology interesting because of the fantastical tales involving a culture's deities and their interactions with each other. At first, it seemed like an odd creature to be part of their mythology, but after considering the places hippos are native to, it makes more sense. I think that's another interesting bit about a culture's mythology- their physical surroundings greatly influence it.
I googled hippos in egyptian mythology and found the following information:
In ancient Egypt herds of hippos were a constant threat to farmers' fields. The first pharaohs hunted hippos in the marshes and eventually drove them far south into Upper Egypt. Hippos became associated with chaos, and the hunt for hippos became a metaphor for how the pharaohs of ancient Egypt could conquer evil. "...was the product of two varieties of shellfish native to the Mediterranean, Thais haemastoma and Murex brandaris. Were one to crack open the shell of one of these spiky, carnivorous gastropods, one would see a pale hypobranchial gland or ā€œbloomā€ transecting its body. If this were squeezed, a single drop of clear liquid, smelling of garlic, would be released. Within moments, the sunlight would turn the liquid first pale yellow, then sea green, then blue, and finally a dark purple-red." (pg. 159)
I found this part interesting due to the photosensitive nature of the mucous squeezed out from gland of the shellfish. I think it's neat that it immediately darkens once exposed to sunlight. It makes me wonder what is happening on an atomic level for that to happen.

Activity 1: I chose to draw my mom while she was studying arabic. She's currently auditing the course at Bonaventure. I think she's a great person because she's kind-hearted, giving, and always exposing herself to new things.

Activity 2: I made a heart-shaped structure and filled the center in with leaves. I outlined the inner perimeter with green leaves to help the shape stand out. I put it by a bench on the trail.

"Beetles are still being harvested today to produce the cochineal used by the cosmetics and food industries. It is found in everything from M&Mā€™s to sausages, red velvet cupcakes to Cherry Coke" (pg. 143)
To begin with, I never pictured using any kind of squashed insects to create a dye. Secondly, I didn't think this would still be practiced so regularly today. It'll definitely make me think twice when I see this color!

The animal I chose to depict is an elephant. Here's five facts about elephants:
Elephants are the world's largest land mammal. An average male elephant can be up to 3 meters (13 ft.) tall and weigh up to 6 tonnes.
The two main species of elephants are African Elephants and Asian Elephants. African Elephants are distinctly larger in size and have bigger ears. Asian Elephants are smaller and have more rounded ears. Asian Elephants also have only one spike at the tip of their trunk while African Elephants have two.
Elephants communicate using seismic signals. They create vibrations in the ground which other elephants detect and absorb through their feet and bones.
Elephant family units are matriarchal. The matriarch of an elephant unit is typically the oldest and largest adult female member of the family. They are the ones responsible for providing stability and conflict resolutions.
Elephants are vegetarians. Their entire diet consists of roots, grasses, fruits, and bark. An adult elephant can consume up to 300 pounds of food in a single day.

Here are some facts about the modern technology depicted as well:
The Concorde is a retired Franco-British supersonic airliner which could maintain speeds of up to Mach 2.04 (2,170 km/h) at an altitude of 60,000 ft. To date, it is one of only two supersonic airliners to see regular service. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supersonic_transport).
The IBM 3380 was the world's first gigabyte-capacity disk drive. It was released in 1980 and weighed 455 kg (1000 lbs). Two 1.26 GB head disk assemblies were packaged in a cabinet the size of a refrigerator. At the time, it was priced at $81k, which is the modern day equivalent of about $287k. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_hard_disk_drives#:~:text=1980%20%E2%80%93%20The%20IBM%203380%20was,first%20gigabyte%2Dcapacity%20disk%20drive.).
Wristwatches were initially designed for women. Men used pocket watches, instead. (https://myjewelryrepair.com/2019/02/12-interesting-facts-about-timepieces/).
The form of the digital tablet was first conceptualized in the 1968 science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was then prototyped and developed in the last two decades of the 20th century. The iPad, released by Apple, was the first mass-market tablet to achieve widespread popularity. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_computer)
The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely regarded as the first practical modern automobile. Built in 1885 by Karl Benz, it was the first car put into production. The original cost of the vehicle in 1886 was $150 USD (equivalent to $4900 in 2022). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benz_Patent-Motorwagen).

I thought of a melting skull after looking at the visual examples on slide 59 of the powerpoint. I wasn't sure what it would be morphing in to, or be part of, but when I was done with just the skull I thought of melting ice cream so I drew it an ice cream cone!

I, like most people, want to travel around the world before I die. I especially want to do some backpacking. Right now, some friends and I are planning on visiting Japan so I drew a torii gate. I also think seeing the pyramids of Giza would be cool. I think what's especially fascinating about them is how we tend to think of them as these lonely vast structures in a vast desert- and that's how they're typically photographed. However, right next to them is a huge city.

The Sagittarius ' most closely related animal would be a horse due to its representation as a half-man, half-horse creature, known as a centaur in Greek mythology.
Its old astronomical symbol is a simple arrow with a vertical line through the center horizontal line, like so: ā™ļøŽ. Its name is Latin for "archer". The constellation itself is located in the southern celestial hemisphere and is one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy. It remains one of the 88 modern constellations. The center of the Milky Way lies in the westernmost part of the constellation.
Its ruling planet is Jupiter, the planet of abundance, and its element is fire. The Sagittarius color is purple, the color of spirituality and awareness. Purple pushes one's philosophical mind towards enlightenment and openness. Also a color of abundance, purple encourages Sagittarius' natural luck and positive nature and drives it to continuously broaden its horizons.

Attendance Prompt, Week 5 (9/25-9/29)
"The Spanish conquerors were highly suspicious of amaranth. The problem was not the role it played in the Aztecsā€™ diet, but in their religion. They considered the plant sacred and it played a key role in many rituals. The Catholic Spaniards were particularly disturbed by the practice of mixing a little blood from human sacrifices into amaranth dough and baking it into cakes, which were then broken up and eaten by the faithful. It was all a little too close to a parody of Holy Communion for them to stomach. Growing, eating, and even possessing amaranth were outlawed." (pg. 131)
I thought this passage was interesting because it's a bit of history that I hadn't heard of, or don't recall learning about, before. After googling the subject, I learned that the Aztecs would shape the amaranth dough into little figures of their gods. These were then eaten as a delicacy. Amaranth had the potential to be as great as all the other globally important food crops. However, the Catholic Spaniards' perspective of this ritual ruined that potential.

I like how colorful this artwork. I also the use of patterns and how the large leaf is centered on the page with surrounding images. On a deeper level, I'm wondering what the little mouse's significance to the creator is. I figure the person likes Lilo & Stitch. I also wonder what the words "The day the music died" means to the person.
Homework:
1. The animal that I chose was a rat/mouse. Growing up, I was always very close with my cousin. She and I were the only girls on my dads side of the family and acted like sisters. We started calling each other ā€œrat,ā€ when we were young and it just stuck. One thing I learned about rats is that their lifespans vary based on color. Brown rats can live for two years while black rats only live 12 months.
2. My favorite music to listen to during fall is calm, vibey music such as Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, SZA, and Quinn XCII. My favorite Halloween movie is halloweentown by far.
3. I was born in 2002, and one of my favorite movies (Lilo & Stitch) was produced in 2002. This movie was a feel-good, funny, yet science fictional masterpiece, and it will never get old for me.
4. One song I chose that reminds me of my childhood is American Pie by Don McLean. The lyrics I chose were ā€œthe day the music died.ā€ This song reminds me of summer nights sitting around a campfire with my family and it brings me happy memories.
Attendance Prompt 9/18-9/26:
The quote that I chose was, ā€œGoddesses, fairy-tale heroes and heroines, and models are disproportionately fair-haired. Blonde waitresses have been shown to get bigger tipsā€ (St. Clair, p. 68). This sentence was extremely interesting to me. Historically, popular women are often blondes and it is a wanted hair color. Iā€™m also a waitress (brunette) and am curious if looks/hair color do have a true affect on tips at the end of the day.

"In ancient Greece, high-class prostitutesā€”hetairaiā€”bleached their hair using noxious mixtures like potash water and the juice of yellow flowers. Roman prostitutes were also said to dye their hair pale or wear blonde wigs." (pg. 68)
I thought this little blip was interesting. Even in ancient times, there were beauty ideals that the women of those times felt compelled to fit. I think it's also just cool that they found a way to bleach their hair even in ancient times.

I chose a rabbit because I'm Chinese and was born in the year of the rabbit. I learned that baby rabbits are called "kits" or "kittens", female rabbits are called "does", and male rabbits are called "bucks".
My favorite music to listen to during the fall is probably alt and indie rock, but I don't usually have a favorite type of music with respect to seasons. Scream is one of my favorite Halloween themed movies.
Ed, Edd n Eddy is a Cartoon Network animated series which first aired in 1999- the year I was born. I picked this because I have memories of watching this show as a kid with my older sister. My sister liked the show more than I did but I have fond memories of spending time with her watching it.
I picked the song Waiting on the Summer by VHS Collection. The lyrics I picked out are "I've been waiting on the summer, Come with me and get some colour" because I think all of us as kids can relate to waiting for the summer, warmer weather, and vacations.

ā€œIsabellinismā€ is also the name of a genetic mutation that renders feathers that ought to be black, gray, or dark brown a pallid yellowish color instead.
This stood out to me as interesting because the previous passage gives some insight into the etymology of the word. It's really interesting to think that the name of a genetic mutation could come from a fictitious tale about the wife of an Archduke of Austria in the 1600s. Sometimes you wonder why certain words are picked for certain things. Here, it's as simple as the yellowish color of the plumage resembles that of the color Isabella's linens were said to become. It makes me think about how the "foot" in the imperial system was defined based on the length of King Henry I's foot.
