Invincible Summer

howhoops, I forgot to actually announce this on my fic blog *facepalm* For @holly-poly 2023, I got the opportunity and motivation to properly write out a plotbunny I've been keeping for at least 3 years. As sometimes happens, it turned out to be about 3 times as long as I had thought it would be, so I'll just link to my usuals and leave a preview here. Over 3k is my full-post limit here, even with Read More, lol.

A rather mousy girl chooses the seat next to her ten minutes before the first class begins; Mayu has been there for twenty minutes already as she doesn’t have much else to do on that day of the first week. She keeps skimming the textbook for this class.

“Hello,” the girl Mayu does not yet know says. “I’m Sohma Kana. Pleased to meet you.”

“Hello. Likewise.” The bare minimum she can say to avoid being rude.

“Are you planning to enter the medical field? I am; right now I’m a physiology major. I think I’d like to be a nurse, or maybe work in the lab and make discoveries, or maybe…”

Clearly, not looking at the girl makes no difference in whether she talks, so Mayu gives up on trying to read her textbook.

Sohma Kana’s face is somewhat flushed, as if she ran to class. Her eyes are hazel, bright and eager; her hair, unlike Mayu’s, is too fashionably short for a ponytail, landing at her chin. However, she wears a decorative hair clip featuring one of the Sanrio characters whose name escapes her.

Mayu notices two things quickly; Sohma-san stopped speaking, and she has an expectant look on her face. This leads to a third thing: Mayu blushing (and praying that Kana doesn’t see it, and blushing harder). Because Sohma-san asked a question, probably, and Mayu hadn’t heard anything because she had been too distracted, maybe even staring.

“Shiraki. Shiraki Mayuko. I’m not, this isn’t, it’s just an elective. I’m studying to be a teacher. A high school teacher,” she adds, the realization dawning.

“I see… This way you can have a backup career as a school nurse!” Sohma-san beams a smile, giggling freely. “Well, Mayu-chan— is it all right to call you Mayu-chan? You can call me Kana-chan— let’s make a study pact.”

“Study pact?” Mayu stammers, caught off guard by... Kana-san’s eagerness.

The girl smiles, undeterred. “Let’s support each other by sharing notes if one of us misses a class, cheering each other on, that sort of thing.”

Mayu much prefers to study alone and keep to herself (because in her skewed logic, that way only she will know if she screwed something up). She has a way of studying that isn’t meant to be disturbed, and—

Kana-san gazes at her, quietly earnest. “It can just be for this course, even if we have other classes together. I do hope we have more classes in common!”

Why does she feel like a goose being imprinted on by a cygnet? She laughs shortly. “We just met. You hardly know me.”

A cat-like grin steals over her face for a moment. “I have good instincts. You seem like an interesting, nice person, and I like you. Besides, if we do end up in other courses then I’ll learn more about you!”

Mayu feels warm everywhere, not just her face anymore; she shifts in her seat, scratching the back of her neck, and admits defeat. “All right.”

Help a Researcher

Leigh Ingram, a student at the University of Ottawa, in Canada, is completing a Master of Information Studies. The proposed research for their thesis is on information seeking behaviours in the fanfiction community, with a specific focus on how AO3 users search through the archive and use the embedded search functions on the website.

This study has received ethics approval for an anonymous online survey, followed by a few interviews. The survey will remain open for approximately 6-8 weeks depending on the volume of response. Following completion of the research, the intention is to share the anonymous data collected and potentially submit an article to Transformative Works and Cultures for consideration, so any findings will be shared with OTW/AO3. 

Survey takers must be 18 or older to take part. If you would like to learn more about the study you can review its consent form, which contains the researcher's contact information.

I continued to indulge with Yukyoru commissions last year, though not for fic~ I was so happy with LexieJay's other commission for me that I knew I wanted to request winter/Christmas Yukyoru from her too ^_^ And yes. I'll probably make drabbles around the art anyway. :D :D :D

one big thing about polyshipping for me is, like. you know how some people will have their eyes opened to homoerotic relationships in media bc they'll realize, "wait, if these people were two different genders, i'd 100% assume they're into each other. i have a double standard that i never noticed"?

there's a polyamorous equivalent in certain media that's basically just. "if you didn't assume this character is monogamous, you would 100% believe they have crushes on & are dating all of their friends." OR, "if this character wasn't dating somebody else already, you would 100% interpret this new friendship of theirs as a crush/budding romance."

usually the creators of the media aren't thinking about polyamory when they make it! usually the creators of the media are thinking "i want this character's friends to be as important to them as their romantic partners, we don't get enough of that in media," which is great and true and also EXACTLY WHY IT WORKS AS A POLY NARRATIVE. people will be like you don't Have to polyship why can't you just let platonic relationships be important ugh 🙄 & i'm like i did my years in the "why can't two men just be friends why does everything have to be gay 🙄" trenches. you're not doing this to me. we're not doing it about polyshipping. we're skipping over that whole discourse cutscene because i am Too Tired For It. don't even start

February Ficlet Challenge 2024: 24/7!

Welcome back! After having gotten an amazing 496 fics in 2023, we will be running another ficlet challenge in 2024!

This year's theme, because it is our seventh ficlet challenge and is in the year 2024, will be 24/7. There will be two prompts every day, of which one will have something to do with the concept of time.

The basic outline of the Ficlet Challenge remains the same, though you are welcome to modify any or all of these guidelines to better suit your writing style or your available spoons:

Make a list of 29 (!) pairings for which you want to write, one per day.

Check this Tumblr every day in February for a new set of prompts; you can write for either or both of the provided concepts!

Write a fic of at least 200 words, using the next pairing on your list - for hard mode, write it and post it the same day you see the prompt!

Post the fic to this collection on AO3. It will remain open until the end of the year, so don't worry if you don't finish all your fics in February.
