I mean, not to rain on the parade here, but I don't think Ashley would go insane over Julia's validation.

Sure, Ashley plays the part of the unloved and unwanted desperate for affection, and on some level this is true. It's certainly what she believes anyway.

But on another level, it's patently false. No matter how many times Andrew reaffirms his love and no matter how far he goes to make her happy, Ashley still believes on some level that it's all a ruse and he'll abandon her at first chance.

Ashley is an attractive girl, yet for all the focus on Andrew's love life, Ashley is never mentioned to have affections for, much less dated, anyone but Andrew. I don't think this was for a lack of suitors. It was likely because, for as suspicious as Ashley is towards Andrew's affections, she is outright rejecting of anyone else's.

This is the character who called her parents "whores" for having friends outside their marriage, after all.

So how would Ashley react to Julia - or indeed, anyone but Andrew - showing her affection? Probably call it fake and tell them to piss off.

All day every day thinking about Julia genuinely loving Ashley and Ashley genuinely being her friend. Julia getting a crush on Ashley instead of Andrew. The way Ashley would react to that kind of attention and validation. Aka she would go insane as usual. Julia falling deeper into love with a girl that keeps hurting her and holding her together and hurting her again. Julia losing her best friend at such a young age, paranoid and sick with anxiety as she goes missing, seeing her face on the milk cartons at school every day. She only has Ashley left. Nina’s body being found, confirmed to be a murder. Julia having nightmares, scared to be alone, haunted by Nina’s death. Hanging onto Ashley no matter how much she mistreats her because she’s all she has left. Sleeping in the same bed after another nightmare when they’re in high school, Ashley holding Julia in her arms, and Julia terrified, trying to keep the puzzle pieces apart. She thinks she can smell blood on Ashley’s hands, even though they’re perfectly clean. The dawning horror of it all. The denial, the acceptance, the fear, the guilt. since moving here ive noticed europeans have no concept of how few americans ever leave USA. every american tourist youve met is of an economic crust that is vastly unobtainable to the other like. 85% generously. no matter what you have believed i can guarantee this. even getting to canada isnt really a possibility and the mexico-US border is highly controlled and militarized.

to put it into perspective. a ~2 hour flight from london to warsaw is like. 30 to 45 USD?

and a 2 hour flight from one US city to another would be about 130 USD

it was very cheap to fly here. i make over 100k USD now and i dont know if ill ever be able to afford leaving. if that gives you an idea of how prohibitive travel is here. i havent even touched on how the US has Zero guaranteed holidays by the govt. many people here go years without ever having an entire week off of work

this has had a like. massive impact on American Brain and they dont even know it because travel isnt even a consideration economically. they dont even know how much more vacation time european countries have guaranteed
