“Great Tits!”, inspired by the Great Tit, a small insectivorous bird with a black and white head, blue wings and tail, olive green upper body and yellow underparts.

Note
Charlotte you are actually my reading inspiration so thank you <3 always such a joy and sense of clarity in the way your write about it
6, 13, 26
6. Are you the type of person who will read a book to the end whether you like it or not, or will you put it down straight away if you’re not feeling into it?
i used to force myself through books but i’ve gotten burned by enough bad ya that i’ve become a lot more discerning, i usually give it a 20-50 page trial then i full commit or drop it. that’s supposed to be the plan anyway, also sometimes i put books down for months and then do get back to them (i call this the incubation period)
13. How do you chose which book to read next?
i’m usually reading 3-5 at a time, i like to have a challenge fiction, challenge non fiction, biography/memoir, plus something easier/fun; sometimes i go into sub categories like classic feminist literature + foundational texts, african american/black history, science/psychology, sociology/cutlure/media studies, like all these areas i wanna read a lot about. i own a lot of books that i haven’t read so when i’m looking to start something in a certain category, i’ll sort of browse my bookshelf and pull a few out, sometimes they’re books ive owned for years or theyre new to me or theyre from the library, im a big believer in the book chooses the reader like it’s all about dipping your toes in everywhere and seeing what sticks. (then i have a separate system for my kindle but it’s less interesting lol)
26. A book you studied in school and ended up loving?
cliche to say catcher in the rye? but probably the most important book i read in school was the autobiography of malcolm x which i read for a class in college and then i reread it this year, hands down the hugest influence not only on my understanding of race in 20th century america (and i ended up majoring in american studies), but also that book is what gave me the drive to read as much as i possibly can and made me start prioritizing reading non fiction. specifically the 2 chapters where he’s in prison and he describes teaching himself to read and suddenly the entire world opens up to him, reading that electrified me like nothing else i’ve ever read

it took me all day but I outlined a kind of fantasy novel from start to finish. it probably won’t hold up over time in lots of places and ways but man, i am glad to get that idea out and down in some way!
