I Like It Like That 1994 (longer trailer)

y’all remember this movie? The parents were Latinx. Lisette’s father was either Afro-Latinx or African-American (either way, he would have fallen under the banner of Black). Lisette had a transgender sister, Alexis.

The director and writer is Darnell Martin, who was originally hyped by Columbia as the “the first African-American woman to make a major studio movie” for this film. She’s actually biracial, mother white and father Black and she wasn’t supportive of that marketing strategy, noting ”I guess it’s important to say for historical reasons. It’s very sad that studios haven’t invested in an African-American woman before this. But I still don’t like the tag. It’s just a matter of semantics. And it takes away from the other black women who have made feature films before me - like Euzhan Palcy (the Martinique director of A Dry White Season), Julie Dash and Leslie Harris (the independently financed Daughters of the Dust and Just Another Girl on the I.R.T., respectively).” 

She was originally rejected from NYU Film School several times, but the final time she was working with Spike Lee and he made a call.

She later went on to direct Halle Berry and Michael Ealy in Their Eyes Were Watching God … and Beyonce, Gabrielle Union, Adrien Brody, etc in Cadillac Records.
