My god you have no idea how close I am to finally finishing this book. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: I have not spoken to anyone since Monday. The radio is playing 'Downtown' by Petula Clerk. I've been reading some Shaw -- Man and Superman. I'm wearing jeans, my cable knit sweater and my Keds. I've made coffee and am waiting for it to cool. Let it be recorded that at this moment I am happy.

OK, so I have to stop having books being due right when the weather is at its most perfect. Have a great weekend, everyone, and remember: It seems to me that there are two basic approaches to any kind of comedy, and in a burst of oversimplification I'll call them the Funny Hat and the Funny Logic approaches. The difference is elementary: In the first, we're supposed to laugh because the comic is wearing the funny hat, and in the second it's funny because of his reasons for wearing the funny hat.

All that matters is the Illini. GOOOOO. Have a great weekend, everyone, and remember: The movie, which was shot over five years by three Chicagoans who eventually amassed more than 250 hours of film, isn't really about sports; it's about the elusive American Dream.

I'm heading to Minnesota for the Big Ten Tournament with Young William. So much Midwestern basketball, I can't take it. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: I can remember back when action scenes got boring and were interrupted by steamy love scenes, but then that was back in the days when audiences liked sex more than guns.

Glad to be back home. Have a great week, everyone, and remember: "North" is one of the most unpleasant, contrived, artificial, cloying experiences I've had at the movies. To call it manipulative would be inaccurate; it has an ambition to manipulate, but fails.

It's difficult to run in Las Vegas! Have a great weekend, and remember: Few films are more despairing and yet, curiously, so hopeful as this one, which argues that even at the very end of the road, at the final extremity, we can find some solace in the offer and acceptance of love.

I'll be in Vegas for the crazy Super Bowl next week. I may just hide in my hotel room. Have a great weekend, everyone, and remember: If you encountered characters like this on an elevator, you'd push a button and get off at the next floor. Here the elevator is trapped between floors for 128 minutes.

In exactly two weeks, I will be seeing U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. If you're going to do Vegas, you might as well do Vegas. (This is as "do Vegas" as I get.)

I'm running another half-marathon this weekend. Please do not throw things if you see me on the street. Have a great weekend, all, and remember: It's astonishing how many people believe New Age notions, which have the attraction of allowing believers to confer supernormal abilities on themselves and others without the bother of plausibility.

Waitin’ Since Last Saturday (subscribe in iTunes) We did our end-of-year feelings episode.
We're right back in the swing of it all, it's like that time off after Christmas never happened. Have a great week, all, and remember: A downstate Illinois boy loves the Steak 'n Shake as a Puerto Rican loves rice and beans, an Egyptian loves falafel, a Brit loves banger and mash, an Indian loves tikki ki chaat, a Swede loves herring, a Finn loves reindeer jerky, and a Canadian loves bran muffins. These matters do not involve taste. They involve a deep-seated conviction that a food is absolutely right, and always has been, and always will be. These convictions are fixed at an early age. I do not expect to convert you.

Gonna be quite a year. Have a great weekend, everyone, and remember: I persist in believing that cinematic taste is as important as taste in literature, music, art, or other things requiring taste (including food and politics)
