i love the trope in (sort of whumpy, not quite) media of a Caretaker waking up or heading into their office for the day to find Whumpee, dead asleep, head down on a desk covered with paperwork and empty coffee mugs after staying up all night to work. Usually leading to some very warm caretaking actions and dialogue that make me kick my feet.

HI! UM...

My external hard drive died.

My entire livelihood is on there, including my comic Senhyakkin, a lot of files crucial to an RPG Maker Project I've been working on, Commission details, and so, SO much more.

I am arranging to get the hard drive shipped out for data recovery, but I've been told it's going to cost anywhere between $1000 - $6000 USD, depending on file size and urgency. Considering that this is a 3TB drive and the stuff on there is, y'know, my livelihood, I am terrified of knowing what the final amount will be...

but it has to be done. I have to get my files back.

I am NOT interested in starting a GoFundMe-- I do not trust it whatsoever. But if anyone is willing to pitch in for the data recovery fee to, like... yknow... prevent Senhyakkin from being ended prematurely... I have the following options:

KO-FI. Even a tiny donation counts! PATREON. Even if it's just $1 for 1 month! It will still help! COMMISSIONS! I'm completely open for commissions and would be extremely grateful to anyone who even wants a tiny illustration from me!

I'm not sure how things are going to go. I will try to keep updates on the situation going on this blog and on Twitter, if anyone is interested/concerned.

Questionnaire - İntercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on whump genre

As part of my research thesis for my Masters of Contemporary International Studies, I am conducting research on "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on whump genre."

This questionnaire is part of this research!

Survey period: Thursday 1st June 2023 (9pm, NZST) - Thursday 29th June 2023 (9pm, NZST)

For the purpose of this research, participants must:

be at least 18 years old

be interested in, or have an appreciation for, whump in fictional stories

Note: Participants are not required to consider themselves a part of the "whump community" in order to participate in this study.

This questionnaire will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Additional information:

This research defines whump as, "Whump is a genre of fiction that places emphasis on a character's physical and emotional experience of pain, and often recovery, in a story."

this is an academic research project (Master's research thesis)

Your responses are completely anonymous.

You may edit your response up until the survey period closes.

You may withdraw any information you provide up until the time the survey period closes.

Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on whump genre - information, interview registration of interest form

I can now announce more information about my upcoming research on whump / whump interest! ✨✨✨

As part of my research thesis for my Masters of Contemporary International Studies, I am conducting research on "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on whump genre."

This study has been approved by the Research and Development Committee of IPU New Zealand Tertiary Institute. The approval was made on the 3rd of May, 2023.

This research two participation opportunities:

- A questionnaire (open Thursday 1st June, 9pm (NZST) - Thursday 29th June, 9pm (NZST))

- An interview (throughout June-July)

For the purpose of this research, to participate in the questionnaire and/or in the interview, you must:

be at least 18 years old

be interested in, or have an appreciation for, whump in fictional stories

Additionally, as the interview explores whump through the perspective of different languages, for the interview you must also:

be bilingual (i.e. at least conversationally proficient in two or more languages)

Note: Participants are not required to consider themselves a part of the whump community in order to participate in this study.

Interview information ---------------

Interview participants will be given two options to choose between:

a spoken interview, conducted via Zoom; or

a written interview, conducted via Tumblr direct messaging, or an alternative direct messaging application as agreed upon by the researcher and participant.

Spoken interviews will be recorded. Spoken interview participants are not required to have video turned on during the interview. The researcher will contact interview participants following interview participant selection to schedule a suitable time for spoken interviews.

For any written interviews conducted via Tumblr direct messaging, the researcher will use the Tumblr handle @callaei-researches to communicate with the participant.

Honestly love it when characters are just...really out of it but in a very specific way.

I love scenarios when someone's going through Some Crazy External Shit that's really extreme and traumatizing and draining and they're absolutely exhausted and their brain is just not in the right place & they're kind of seeing things.

Like okay if they're in an intense battle that's been going on for hours and they're bleeding and staggering and are still on their feet with adrenaline alone, but then they're hit badly again and kind of bleeding out and there's gunfire or lasers or magical explosions going on all around them and they're trying to stay conscious while also disassociating completely and when somebody grabs their injured body and starts to drag them from the battlefield they look up and all they can see are the shadowy arms of death before they pass out

Or someone on the run through a forest at night with a storm raging overhead, lightning threading through the sky and thunder booming with alarming volume, they're terrified and cold and certain either the storm will kill them or their pursuers will, and suddenly a lightning bolt strikes a tree near them and lights up the whole world for an instant, now there's fire and water and wind all around them at once and their ears are ringing and they're sure they must have already died somewhere in their chase

Anyway whumpees being in that panicked, adrenaline-ridden, in-bad-shape-in-a-multitude-of-ways state and then something just absolutely bonkers happens and they can't process it (usually followed pretty quickly by them losing consciousness either from exhaustion, cold, their injuries, or sheer panic)...just gets to me

Your whump hot take is chefs kiss 10/10 I love whump with plots and one of the infuriating things about the whump community is trying to find *stories* instead of collections of drabbles (nothing wrong with the collections they’re just not the same as a good novel?)

I must admit, I always felt pressure to have whump in every instalment of every story I uploaded. But my writing (and reading) preferences lean more towards having whump only at significant moments. So I've been going back to older projects and working on those instead, for AO3 or future publishing.

If you're looking for a story that's a little more whump centric, the wonderful @callaeidae3 has an independently published book series! I may compile a list of "whump-with-plot" books at some point, too.

#I think whump is generally better with a plot #one of the reasons I don't post writing here anymore is because I prefer my whump to be a seasoning not the whole flavour #I need to know the characters inside and out before I get real satisfaction from whumping them #and imo #a little whump goes a very long way #too much of it makes me indifferent

Upcoming new whump research!

I have just started my research year of my Masters' degree! I'm currently working on my research proposal and ethics clearance.

This research will have both an online distributed questionnaire and an interview.

I am hoping to have the questionnaire open in June 2023 (pending human ethics approval clearance). The interview* will happen following the questionnaire, and will be limited in spaces - I will update on this later.

I will confirm my focus area of research and the survey period opening dates within the coming weeks!
