solo : open event 003, coaching session
word count : 637
when nathan first returned back to practice, he wasn't expecting a cold shoulder from everyone, but he wasn't exactly anticipating the warmest of welcomes either.
things were left on a rather awkward note, so to speak – to go from being around the same dozen or so staff members on a daily basis, to suddenly being back in the presence of hundreds of strangers, save for a few trainers' faces that still plague his dreams (nightmares?) ever so often.
for a while, he couldn't meet anyone's eyes, not even his own. looking in the mirror became like some sort of trigger – he thinks that's what they're called – and it's only when he found himself a trainee again did he realize how surrounded he was by these goddamn mirrors.
in the dorm, in the dance studio, in the fucking bathroom – being an idol quite literally requires one constantly looking at themselves, their appearances and reflections, but nathan? he cringes.
he looks in the mirror, and he doesn't like what he sees. staring back is just a shadow of the person he used to be, the idol he thought he was.
so those first few weeks back were hard, rough, and challenging even – something he, honestly, never thought of when he first became a trainee.
it's one night in particular that comes to mind. well-past the stroke of midnight, the emptiness and eeriness of the building comforts him in a way he finds it difficult to describe. something about the loneliness consoles him, and he snorts. how ironic, he thinks, to yearn to be alone when all he's ever wanted in life was unbridled attention.
the night (or perhaps, the morning) wanes on, and one of the coaches makes their way downstairs. thinking back, nathan laughs, for it's the question of whether he was staying back too late or if this coach was simply arriving to work early, that prompted this quote-unquote memorable interaction.
he wonders if it was the sole light in his practice room illuminating the hallway or the echo of his sneakers against linoleum flooring that beckoned such divine intervention. either way, at some point, he hears the creak of the door slowly swing open, but avoids investigating the source of the noise.
maybe it's his aversion to sight that heightens his sense of sound, but he can hear the assumed-stranger shift their weight, lean onto the doorway, and cross their arms. they sigh, and nathan freezes.
you know, nathan, they start. i was really happy when i heard you came back as a trainee.
he gulps.
i'm not sure what you want to do for the rest of your life, but i hope it continues to involve performing. there are only so many people who are a joy to watch on stage, and i genuinely think you're one of the them.
there's a beat of silence, with nathan just standing there and breathing – panting, even, with a heave of his chest with every heavy breath. then he hears it, the rustle of clothing and the squeak of the door hinges again as he senses the other turn on their heel to leave.
keep up the good work, kid.
those words, the figurative release of all of this self-imposed tension, prompts him to lose strength his legs and stumble to his knees. fists balled, eyes squeezed shut – it's not an emotional moment for him, nathan wants to clarify, but something more simple than that. it's relief.
he composes himself, brushes off the wrinkles in his shirt as he helps himself up. there's a deep breath or two from him as he takes a step back and back and back until his shoulder-blades gently press up against the wall-to-ceiling mirrors that line the wall.
he turns around, and looks at himself.
"man," he chuckles. "i look like shit."

solo : lgc trainee mission 016 (lgc variety show special), interview
word count : 316
what is one lesson or takeaway you’ve learned from this experience?
nathan takes a long, hard second to answer. he has to think about it, truly – he's been doing that a lot these days, just thinking.
it's the last question asked during his last interview filmed for the special, and he wants to end the experience with a positive yet honest reply.
"i've always heard this saying before, but i never really understood it now. it goes something like, 'we don't experience life, we experience the life we focus on.'"
he hums in thought, and hesitates. he's never been one to have this sort of philosophical-type of character, so he wonders, briefly, if he should keep going before (of course) he undoubtedly does.
"i'm not sure if i'm wording this right, but i think it's easy to come to places like this that are so different and far away from where we usually live, and be weirded out by all the differences.
"i grew up in new york city and only ever lived in seoul since i moved to korea, so i've always been the type of person who really appreciated, uhh, convenience – you could say – in my life. but over time, and by being here, i've come to realize that it's good to have to work hard for simple things that i've come to take for granted, like what i'm going to eat for dinner."
he pauses, folding his hands in his lap. "i've never realized this before, but food truly tastes better when everyone works together. playing games, gathering ingredients, cooking, and cleaning – and that all culminates in all of us sitting around a table and just sharing a meal together.
"... that's the kind of lesson i've learned through this experience, and i hope to live a life that focuses on those kinds of things more in the future."

solo : trainee mission 016 (lgc variety show special), sunday
word count : 303
nathan's always had a soft spot for old people. it's just something about them, the elderly – so fragile and frail, and yet capable of being total and complete assholes when they want to be. to an extent, he can respect it – the ability to find strength when others perceive you as being so weak.
so because of that, he probably took this whole 'chores' thing a little too seriously. his arms are sore from all the scrubbing and cleaning – he can't even count the amount times he's run his fingers over out-of-the-way corners and crevices to brush away the last remnants of dust in the house.
his sneakers are absolutely ruined by all of the dirt and manure, and his body only oozes sweat at this point – but he doesn't mind. in fact, he's actually kind of proud.
and who would've thought, too, that nathan bae of all people would be this enthusiastic about manual labor.
there's just something about it, about wanting to do something for someone else. it sounds simple, but it truly is rewarding to see all your hard work come to such fruition.
but irregardless of the personal merits of such discipline, just seeing the faces of the homeowners upon their return – seeing all this work done that they've, no doubt, been procrastinating for months if not years – made it all worth it.
sure, he knows that they know that this is all for a television show, that they're a bunch of mostly-city boys who've never stepped within a fifty-foot radius of a farm, let alone dealt with the trials and tribulations of farm-work. such treatment is temporary and, ultimately, fleeting, but the looks of joy from a well-deserved rest are ones that nathan can personally empathize with.
and again, he's always had a soft spot for old people.

out of everyone, it was the hardest to see parker again. it's not like they were exactly best friends – nathan's not even sure if he can categorize their relationship as simply as that – but parker was the member he was the closest to in type zero. parker teased him, but they could talk, have fun. be normal guys in the dorms, and each other's biggest supporters while at work.
parker's more like a brother, in those ways, so it fucking sucked to leave him behind without even an explanation nor a proper good-bye.
nathan always thought their reunion would be more ceremonious than this. or, at least, something more private, and not under the watchful eyes of staff members, trainees, and other former groupmates (haru counts, technically) alike. and yet, here they are, uttering their first words to each other without even looking at the other's face.
and maybe it's better that way. variety games are something you're good at.
"fuck, man," nathan sniffles under his breath. he really hopes his microphone didn't pick that up, and – are those goddamn tears in his eyes? "i think that's the first ever compliment you've given me since we've known each other."
When Parker was asked to participate in the variety show, he was excited enough, but what he hadn’t expected was to see Nathan. Nathen, his former groupmate, was now a trainee. Again. That information alone was enough to cause him to throw Parker’s carefree nature because the truth was, he never really knew why Nathan decided to leave. His whole departure had been a mess, preceding the departure of both Dowoon and Eunho, and leaving Parker and Daeho in this situation to try and move on with new members, on top of being part of Future Dreams. As far as he knew, the presence of the new members had been partially why Daeho had been eliminated, and Parker had found himself more booked than and busy than he had ever been. To the point, he hadn’t been granted vacation time from the company.
This wasn’t something Parker held against Nathan — he had somehow managed to find his own happiness and rest in the quiet moments of his schedule — but because of said busy schedule, it seemed like only a few months had passed until this moment. He hadn’t even known Nathan had returned or what had gone on, though now was hardly the time to ask. Instead, something awkward and thick hung in the air; it was to the point that even Parker couldn’t fully deny it.
The loud laughter and yelling that had wrecked his body after dealing with Byeonkwan fizzles and softens when he hears Nathan’s request. This was so odd. He was his hyung back then too, but from the beginning, he had always wanted to be comfortable with Nathan. He had teased him mercilessly because it was fun, but when he finally replies, his voice was gentle and soft, holding back all the questions he had. “Just do your best. Variety games are something you’re good at.”

at first, he wasn't sure how people were going to react – if he wanted them to react, at all. but in ways, he's grateful that most of the trainees on the show are ... normal about the big elephant in the room (an almost-literal big elephant, too – have trainees been getting shorter or is nathan just uncommonly tall in this industry?)
granted, that behavior probably has more to do with them being strangers more than anything, but polite cortesy or not, he was grateful for the indifference either way. "thanks, man," he says as he follows behind the other. "my original plan was to just look through all the groceries like an idiot, but asking for help definitely works, too," he adds with a chuckle.
he's not sure if it's a good thing that he's so new to this whole life or whatever, but, while he had been a fan of kpop, he hadn't been an avid one so he didn't really know the different members of the groups. he had been generally a casual fan of the legacy groups and had only listened to title songs and whatever.
even now, he still only really did that, if he's honest.
so he missed everything that went down between nathan and type zero. honestly, he hadn't even known that the other trainee had been a former idol. or whatever. he's not too sure of what had happened, had only heard it briefly through the other trainees when they were resting between filming.
"mm?" iseul perks up when he's addressed, nodding to confirm that that is indeed him before he brightens slightly, glad to have something to do and someone to talk to.
"yeah, here, i'll show you where they are," he says, getting up from where he had been sitting and beckoning to the taller trainee. "it's this way!"

starter for : @lgcparker
context : trainee mission 016 (lgc variety show special), saturday
Tumblr media
when they're split into old vs. young teams, nathan's first thought is, how ironic that i'm considered 'old' now when i used to be the youngest in type zero. and then his second thought is, oh right, used to be.
it doesn't help that both parker and daeho are assigned to the old team themselves, making a match made in misery for nathan as he's placed behind parker in their relay drawing line. their first day here, nathan exerted all his energy in avoiding the two, but now due to forced proximity, he wonders if he can muster up enough courage to initiate conversation, let alone talk to either of the practically-strangers.
"h-hyung," he whispers loud enough for the other to hear and (hopefully) quiet enough that his microphone can't pick his words up. "don't make fun of me if my drawings suck, okay?"

starter for : @iseullgc
context : trainee mission 016 (lgc variety show special), friday
Tumblr media
today's been a weird day. like, really weird – like nathan doesn't even know the right words to describe how weird, weird.
when he was first a trainee, he'd probably eat this type of thing up – a variety show specially broadcasted to promote legacy's current trainees – but now, he's just embarrassed. embarrassed in front of the cameras, embarrassed to be considered a trainee again, but even more embarrassed by the literal on-screen comparison between him, an ex-type zero member, and the two remaining type zero members from his line-up.
and understandably, he's been avoiding them – parker and daeho – whenever possible. maybe this is what the producers want, this inevitable tension between them, but nathan's not up for playing their games. well, save for the games they're required to play.
"ah, excuse me," he calls to the nearest junior trainee he recognizes. "iseul, right? could you tell me where you all placed the bags of rice? i'm in charge of making it tonight, shockingly enough."

*guess_who's_back_back_again.mp3* hi all ! thank you so much all the warm welcome (back's) 🤍 i'm kristin / admin *, and for those of you who don't know, nathan is my previous third-turned-second muse before i dropped out of the rp completely back in may of last year. i've still been around doing graphics, but nathan has always had a special place in my heart – and i knew that if i were to return with a muse, it would be with him. so when soobin opened up, i knew this was my one and only chance !
that being said, nathan is ~pretty much~ the same but ofc different in ways. his timeline is a continuation from where he was ic-wise last year, and you can read more under the cut about what his life is like now in the post-type zero era of his career. i've also linked his previous introduction that includes more of his backstory before he came to legacy for your reference !
now, without further ado, please like or reply to this post if you want to plot ! and if we plotted before, please don't feel like we need to keep the same connection – i'm practically starting from scratch here, and i'm excited to see what the future holds for nathan + all of you !
because i am an admin, you can easily reach me here or on the main. alternatively, you can find me on twitter or discord – just ask for my username, and i'll add you !
super stoked to be back here in my favorite place with my favorite people – let's get this party started 🥳
tl;dr on his backstory is that he (1) grew up in new york city, (2) acted out a lot because of parental neglect (re: being raised in boarding schools his whole life), (3) ended up in korea because the school board threatened to expel him after a prank-gone-wrong, (4) auditioned for legacy after his npc-big brother got signed to the company, (5) stayed because it was the first time in his life he ever got praised for literally anything and, wow, very much attention and affection-starved from the get-go, and (6) debuted in type zero in april of 2021 after four years of training!
now ... where, oh, WHERE do i even begin? like i mentioned in my ooc post when i dropped, nathan ultimately left type zero because of massive burnout. at the time, he was practically hard-carrying the group's promotions with his solo activities, and the burden of maintaining type zero's 'status' in the industry was eventually too much for him.
it was a lot for him, okay. not only was he dealing with the emotional turmoil that came from being in a group with so many line-up changes and differing opinions from the public, he was succumbing to the pressure of all these expectations placed on him that he (as he knows now) never felt properly prepared for before his debut.
the first few weeks after his departure, he had an extended staycation with his grandparents in the outskirts of seoul before flying back to nyc for some much-needed r&r.
since he was still signed to legacy even after leaving type zero, he returned to training after about three months of 'vacation' – so he's only been full-time training for a little over six months now.
he's been avoiding, basically, everyone – previous managers and stylists and other staff members, other debuted idols in the company, and, of course, the type zero members.
he's so ashamed of himself, for giving something up that (as he first-hand witnessed himself!) hundreds of kids only dream of after sacrificing their childhoods, their youths, their critical developments years all for the goal of becoming an idol.
and he's embarrassed, for obvious reasons. when he left type zero, he was practically at the top of his game, but now? now he's stuck in the basement, in the hallways of dance studios and practice rooms, surrounded by unfamiliar faces that whisper and gossip as he passes by. he's visibly older than most trainees now, and his energy nor enthusiasm can barely keep up anymore.
before, nathan thought he could take the world on by storm – that no matter what problem or obstacle, he could bulldoze through with sheer willpower alone. but now he's scared, and more jaded. the idol industry isn't anything like they tell you to believe, and there truly are things you can only learn through real-life experience.
but at the end of the day, nathan knows why he's still here, why he's tormenting himself by going through this rigorous training process again. he loves it. he loves it so much, and so much more than wanting to run away from it all once again.

like on @lgcdanbi, here’s my last hurrah as the writer of bae nathan ! under the cut, you’ll find my lasting thoughts on nathan and where i think he’s ended up now - very emotional and gushy and mostly for me, but feel free to read if you’re interested!
i will be archiving this account for nathan (as i will, too, for danbi) - it’ll still be up to keep all my threads and musings and whatnot, but feel free to unfollow as i don’t expect be posting anything new here! and like i said on my other post, thank you to everyone who wrote with me, nathan, and danbi - i hope we can all write together again soon! 🤍
oh nathan, where do i even begin with you? to be honest, i’m surprised i got as attached to you as i did. at the time, you were my last of three muses when created, and like my very own youngest child, i spoiled you. you were fun and exciting and just different for me to write for, and you helped me explore and understand myself better as i was learning just as much about you. nathan, you are the light of my life. i hope you never stop shining.
nathan probably left lgc because of burnout. he was overworked and unmotivated, and frankly, that’s just too much for a guy like him.
him leaving is more shocking than danbi as he truly did cherish everything about being an idol - type zero was more family to him than his real family ever was, and the opportunities being in the group gave him were second to none. it was a real bitch for him to decide to leave, especially knowing how hurt he was when other members left before him.
i think he took a much-needed break (and finally confessed his love to @lgcyejin, oh my fucking god!!!) with his grandparents, maybe even flew back to new york for a few weeks to catch up with some old friends, before coming back to south korea - reinvigorated and excited for his next challenge.
he definitely resigned with a new agency - nathan is an entertainer, baby, you can’t get rid of him that easily! - and settled into a good reputation of being a variety star before testing the waters with new music. at the end of the day, he loves to dance, so yeah - in my universe, solo artist nathan does exist. he lives on in our hearts!

PARKER,
Happy Valley
Parker considered Nathan’s words, tipping his head from side to side in exaggerated thought. (...)
“I would never sabotage you~,” he mused sweetly before bursting into a bark of laughter and using his hands to wipe away his words. He really wasn’t trying to sabotage anyone but still, it was still he couldn’t help but play around.
The older boy nods his head at Nathan’s reasoning and lets out a small huff of laughter. “Perhaps if you can ride this without screaming, I will consider this treaty.” He knew probably as much as Nathan, but it didn’t stop Parker from becoming his groupmate towards the ride. Hint or not, at least they’d have some fun, right?
he knew it’d be too good to be true to get parker to help them without any... incentive for him to - and honestly, riding some amusement park ride was a small price to pay for a sweet, sweet victory. so nathan grinned - maybe a tad too eagerly - at parker’s proposition, and turned to dramatically face the camera.
“did you hear that? you got that all on camera, right?” he asserted with a point of his finger, moving it to then point right at parker’s face. “no take-backsies, okay? you can’t take anything back once it’s said on camera!” nathan playfully exclaimed as he started to make his way towards the stairs up to the ride.

YEJIN,
there was something unusual about this, because she’s not used to this from nathan - nathan has always talked confidently to her, or so it had seemed at least but here he was seemingly nervous? was that truly it? yejin didn’t want to believe it, nor did she want to give herself any of the credit for making nathan feel that way, but when he apologizes for the way he had acted earlier in the year she is caught a little off guard.
the way he stumbles and swears, and she never expected him to actually apologize to her.
(...)
eyes widen as she looks at him, he doesn’t want to lose her.
yejin let’s it sink in, and she looks at him and she nods. yejin understands and she’s probably forgvien him a long time ago, “ i never went anywhere, ” she says and looks at him with a small smile, “ thank you for apologizing nathan. i really appreciate it. truly. ”
it’s, like, he knows - logically and in his head, that it’s only really a few seconds between him apologizing and her responding. but in his heart, it feels like an eternity. as if everything in motion in both time and space stops to determine his fate; breath is held and fists are clenched as he stands before her, waiting - patiently, mind you - for her reply.
it’s as if the weight of a whole millenium lifts of his shoulders when she finally speaks. i never went anywhere, she says, and he sighs. in deep relief.
“oh, thank god,” he impulsively says on an exhale, a hand naturally reach up to still his ever-beating heart as he catches his breath and realigns his focus. “i mean, i was prepared for the worst, but it feels really, really good to know that the worst won’t, ya’ know, happen.”
a shy bout of laughter escapes him as he still finds it a tad awkward to look yejin directly in the eye; he’s glancing around everywhere - clearing his throat and fidgeting with his free hand - before he finally musters up the courage for some eye contact. “in all seriousness, it means a lot to me that you’re willing to forgive me. i promise i won’t fuck up this second chance like i did the first time - or like not at all, actually.” he shakes his head - goddamn rambling.
“what i mean is - i’ll be a better friend from now on,” he asserts, holding out his left pinky before him. “swear on it.”

PARKER,
Happy Valley
you must be this tall to ride: @lgcnathan
“Oh! Have you checked over here?” Parker asked, waving in the direction of Nathan as he edged closer to one of the rides. (...)
His walking stride had turned into something akin to an excited trott as he rounded one corner to look up at a rollercoaster peeking out between some man-made ruins and mountains. For a moment, the singer paused and looked up as one of the cars went screaming by and he turned to look at the person filming. “Woah…that would look wild, do you think one of the signs is in there? We should totally check it out.” Parker nodded to himself and the camera, probably willing to waste some time in their hunt to ride a cool ride. “NAaaThaan!!” He called as if the younger man was meters and meters away. “Common, my spidey senses say there’s one in here!”
to be honest, though nathan’s a tad scared to admit it, he was afraid that some variety show burn-out was on the horizon for him. with their comeback promotions and his separate individual activities, it was the first time in, like, ever that he wished he was less busy. (it’s curious, isn’t it? how during this time last year, all he was yearned for was more work for him, for type zero.)
but even though this, the web series they were currently filming for in the heart of china, was technically a variety show, it didn’t feel like it. no - not when he can just run around and tease his members, relaxing a bit with their usual antics and not having to stress himself with worrying about the spotlight all the time in this unexpected ‘vacation’, so to speak.
following behind parker (and with their respective cameramen in tow), he glanced over the rollercoaster’s railings before squinting at parker. “i don’t know if you’re trying to help me or sabotage me,” he jokingly stated. “though if the mc does, say, have information of where the logos are hidden, then what do i have to do to get him on team beijing’s side?”

YEJIN,
there were no thoughts in her head for a moment as she leaves the restroom and is face to face with him all of a sudden, he had been sitting next to hear all evening. barley saying anything at all, and now he was there and she didn’t understand what he wanted. a part of her had thought she had gotten over her feelings, but having him around her tonight and seeing him made her realize that they were anything but gone and she feels like an idiot.
hearing his voice call out her name after so long makes her feel weak, she looks at him silently for a little while. contemplating her choices for a moment but she knows, if she just walks away - she will wonder what it is that he wanted to say.
yejin nods slowly, “ yeah, sure, ” she glances up at him and smiles a little weakly at him.
she figures however they can’t be standing around outside the restrooms and talk about whatever he wants, she couldn’t for the life of her figure what he possibly could tell her. not that he’s already told her, even if she knows what he told her earlier in the year was said in frustration and anger. yejin couldn’t help but remember what he said then.
obsessed.
what could he possibly want?
fuck, maybe this was a bad idea. he wasn’t expecting her to just say ‘yes’ so easily. he assumed she’d be standoffish - hostile, even - especially after being a silent freak for all of dinner only to corner her as soon as she leaves the restroom. goddammit, he sucks.
and yet, it’s too little and too late to regret it now, so when she replies, he steels himself to bury his pride and ready himself for... well, anything as he nods his head and gestures to a more, err, private alcove of the hallway that’s not in plain sight of their coworkers and other patrons of the restaurant.
he’s nervous, obviously, as he exhales deeply before he finally musters up that last bit of courage to talk.
“i just wanted to say i’m sorry - i mean, i am saying i’m sorry. fuck, i mean - i’m sorry. i’m really sorry.” he stumbles over his words a bit before sticking the landing - at least that part’s out of the way now.
“i was a huge asshole to you the last time we talked. i was going through it and was struggling with processing everything that was happening with our line-up changing so much and then having our comeback shelved at the last minute for lgc boys—” shit, he’s rambling. “—not like any of that is an excuse for how i treated you.”
he sighs. “you’re a good person, and i appreciate everything you do for me... and i don’t want to lose you in my life because of this.”
