Week 5(ish)
Tumblr media
So I'll admit I've been slacking on this blog pretty badly. I haven't posted for weeks and have kind of been in a mid-winter funk.
Luckily, the weather here has been beautiful, in the 40's most days and lots of misty rain. I haven't finished the book yet but have been enjoying reading Steinbeck again.
I chose this by consulting my mom (librarian extraordinaire) and by checking out https://www.goodreads.com. I also wanted to read a book by an American author that I hadn't read before.

Holding his cigarette just so.

Week 4
Tumblr media
I've just passed the 3 month mark on the island and love it here, but I can't help but miss my family and friends back home. I've been missing the small moments, like grabbing sushi with my sister or going grocery shopping with my best friend. I miss sitting around with mom while she works a crossword puzzle and asks me to help her with the obscure clues that I never know.
Anyway.
I drew this task a couple of weeks before valentines day and got to see some ridiculous suggestions that a large flower website had to offer. I was going to send flowers from the local flower shop in my hometown but ended up buying them online because my credit card company had a special running with one of the big online flower retailers.
Tumblr media
Really? $31.50 + shipping for chocolate covered Twinkies? Nasty. Maybe it's supposed to be alluring because it's on sale. Needless to say I didn't go with this option.
Tumblr media
Dyed rainbow roses? These are the fugiest flowers I've ever seen.
Tumblr media
I ended up going with these simple daffodils because I knew my mom would like them and they weren't too expensive. My sister took a peek at mom's schedule and helped me pick a day when she had the day off and not much on her calendar.

Week 3
Tumblr media
Funny how last week I drew a task that involved doing something good for other people and this week I drew a task that was for me and me only.
Tumblr media
Treat Yo Self cupcakes from the episode of Parks and Recreation, “Pawnee Rangers,” season four. (NBC)
A massage wasn't in my budget this week so I took a long bath, watched Sons of Anarchy and got to use some of my favorite bath treats including a Lush Sex Bomb bath bomb, Lush Jasmine & Henna Fluff Eaze, and the amazing Aztec Secret clay face mask.
Tumblr media
I haven't taken a bath in months and probably won't again for a while since we have very sulfur-y well water and I don't want to deplete the well too much (or soak in egg smelling water). I'm happy to report that the sulfur stink was covered by the gorgeous pink Sex Bomb and that the whole bathroom smelled like jasmine after I used the hair mask. It was such a nice treat to take a bath and soak for a while but I don't think I'll make it a regular occurrence.

Week 2
Tumblr media
I'm not happy to admit that I don't do much philanthropic work these days, in fact I think the last time I donated food was in college to get overdue library book fines reduced. Which is exactly why I put several tasks that emphasize giving back to the community.
I read a few articles on what are the best items to donate to food banks and noticed that most suggested healthy, nutritious options like low-sodium vegetables and soups, canned proteins (like tuna), no sugar added fruits and juice, and whole grain pasta. Basically the same kinds of food I would want to keep in my house.
It was pretty fun to go shopping for food to donate, I went shopping one evening after work and bought around $25 worth of nonperishable foods.

The after hours donation box.

The local food bank.
This task was SO EASY yet I would have never done it unless there was a reason to. Sometimes it's nice to do good things just because it's good. (i.e. altruism)

Change in plans
Tumblr media
Task overhaul on the couch.
Full disclosure - I made this blog, wrote the tasks and started doing this all last year, and never made it past week 2. Yeah, oops. Needless to say that a few things have changed, namely my location. Moving from Lexington, Kentucky to a small island off the coast of Washington State has been a huge change and I’m still adjusting to being so far from my family and familiar surroundings.
In lieu of the move there were several family related tasks in the jar that had to be changed. Go to the Photo Booth with Mom, Visit family in Tenneessee, Eat sushi with Maggie (my sister), pick flowers for mom.
Other tasks has to be changed because they were specific to Kentucky. For instance, Go to the drive in, Go to a distillery, neither of those are readily available anymore since I live on an island.
So I tried to keep the new tasks relatively inspired by the old ones. For instance, instead of pick flowers for mom I now have send flowers to mom. It’s not the same but I think she’ll appreciate the sentiment. I replaced visit family in Tennessee with send family members postcards. Again, it’s not the same but I hope it will be a nice surprise.
I also added some new tasks specific to my new home which will, I hope, be a fun way to get to know the area better. In a way I am happy that I didn’t do this project last year. I know my hometown and state pretty well and am excited to get out of my comfort zone in a radically different place.

Week 1
Tumblr media
This task is pretty easy, but since there isn't a winter farmers market where I life I tried some new foods from the local health food store. I picked out Mochi, which I've had before in the form of the mochi ice cream from Trader Joe's.
Tumblr media
This mochi is made from whole grain brown rice and tastes just like plain rice. I made the recipe on the back of the package which was a basic veggie casserole with mochi cubes on top. I liked the vegetables more than the mochi and probably won't buy it again.
Tumblr media
just look at those delicious looking mochi blobs ^
I also bought some fish! That deserves the exclamation point because fresh fish is a little used to be a little iffy for me and now that I live on the coast it's really exciting to have access to different types of fresh fish. I bought two fillets of petrale sole and used this recipe from Ina Garten. It was easy, cheap and delicious and I would totally buy the fish again.

One week down, fifty one to go.

I am tired.
I am tired of apathy. I am tired of boredom. I am tired of excuses.
So I made a list of over 60 tasks, activities, goals and much more. It's not a bucket list, it's a life list. Originally I divided the tasks up into seasonal jars, but for the sake of space in my tiny apartment I put them all together. Every Monday I'm going to draw a task from the jar and do it. No matter what.
Here are some examples of my life list: Sign up and run a 5K, go to a meditation workshop, at home spa day, milk a cow, read a book.
This exercise is to get me out of my regular schedule and try something new for a change.
Follow, join and live with me through my adventures this year of life, more life!
