On the Road Home
Driving back into town after a date with two of the most important people to have shaped his life, Kojiro reflects on how far they've come.
Founders Fest 2022 Day Six Long Distance if you look creatively
The only feeling that he could compare it to was when his plane had landed back in Okinawa when he’d come back from Italy. He’d thought he’d made a new home–no, better than he’d been before, investing in a future–until he’d stepped on familiar ground and knew he’d returned to where he’d always belong.

what if kaoru and kojiro worked for ainosuke?
“God, but that meeting could have been an email.”
“Cherry, darling… we called for that meeting. I wanted to cut early and hit that spa the chairman was raving over, and you insisted we need more feedback before we unveil your newest technological marvel to the masses…” “I imagined they would have more valuable input, but I was obviously grossly overestimating your colleagues… I booked the spa for tomorrow, but only if you ace the announcement interview. Think of it as motivation.” “They all adored your proposal. As the face of your brand, I’ll make the journalist adore it as well. Anyway, I thought you worked for me, darling. If I say spa, you say…”
“What time and what temperature?”
“I say if I never took that spot as your personal assistant after high school, you would still be campaigning for promotion with the diet club instead of heading a very successful technology start up. And I seem to remember you promoting me to partner.”
“Silent partner, of course.”
“Eyes on the road, Kojiro.”
“On paper you and I are still personal assistants. We couldn’t let people know the great Ainosuke Shindo had help getting where he is, could we?” “See, Kojiro knows his place.” “Kojiro just likes being shirtless and fawned over, and spas are opportune. You enable him.”
“Guilty. But, c’mon, Kaur, there would be plenty of fawning to go around.”
“I do rather enjoy fawning over my darling flushed Cherry Blossom all hot and bothered.”
“Oh? Is that the motivation you’re looking for? You’re just going to have to impress me, then. I don’t know if you’re up for the challenge.”
“Give it up, Kaoru. Doesn’t matter how many times you ask. There’s no way Adam’s cutting S to practice his presentation a hundred more times than he already has. He’s got it down. You’re just being an anxious little nag.”
“And how would you know, you great disruptive oaf? Was he practicing to you over his gnocchi di tartufo last night?”
“Do not answer that.”
“Yeah, obviously.” “You... practiced without me?”
“I think you make him nervous.”
“I find that impossible to believe.”
“If you heard, if you saw half—”
“I pay you to drive me, Jo, sweetheart, not psychoanalyze me.” “Consider it a perk. Complimentary. Like, I dunno, garlic bread.”
“Don’t garlic bread me, then.”
“You love my garlic bread.”
“Right now I’d love to shove it in your mouth but that would make it rather difficult for you to keep driving.”
“I could make you a bowl of plain rice for dinner every night this week. I could do that. I could make that happen.”
“Don’t be obscene, Kojiro.”
“Fine, alright. If you’ve been practicing as much as Kojiro suggests, I suppose spending the entire night at S will be no worse for your performance tomorrow than the night before we gave our first successful one…”
“Are you referring to the night we rented that love hotel and made sweet love to you on the water bed, or the night we skateboarded intoxicated through an abandoned mine shaft for the first time and made sweet love against the wall of the… what was it, Kojiro?”
“Wasn’t really focused on the where, bella.”
“I bet we could find it again if we looked closely. Probably still scratches in the walls.”
“Not any more.”
“You remember, sweet Cherry Blossom?”
“Vividly. You built your fucking stage overtop it, sweet Ainosuke.”
“Mm. You do remember.”
“Fucking hell. Didn’t realize Adam was so sentimental.”
“Just drive, Kojiro.”
“Back to our place, or on to S?”
“Depends. You brought the costumes, didn’t you, Blossom, love?”
“If you screw up this presentation, I will literally never forgive you.”
“I need to relax before the presentation.”
“Need to stroke your ego, you mean.”
“If you want to.”
“Anyway, yes, as a matter of fact, I did.” “Yes, you want to? What, right now? Kaoru, how scandalous.” “Yes, he brought the costumes, Adam. Cool it. You don’t want a distracted driver on your hands.”
“You brought the costumes?”
“Of course I brought the costumes.”
“Ru can’t resist showing off any more than you can.”
“He can’t resist me, you mean—But, I thought you’d take a little more convincing, what with our presentation… Don’t roll your eyes.”
“You’re going to nail the presentation.”
“Not the only thing I’m going to nail.”
“Presentation, first.”
“Of course, Kaoru. After S.”
“Of course.”
“God, when we’re parked I’m going to do bad things to both of you.”
“You’re going to have to catch us first.”
“If you can with all that delicious muscle weighing you down.”
“Watch me. I always do.”

Adam looked happy, a lot happier than Langa had last seen him at least. He was laughing. Good for him. He was also getting a lot closer, much more quickly than Langa would have thought, despite the massive yellow parachute he was strapped to. Where was that going to fit? Oka really should have made accommodations.
Oh. Langa probably should have told everyone he’d invited Adam to his victory party once he learned his friends were throwing one. That was on him.
Langa’s Party from the Episode 12 Credits, where Langa sees and learns a lot about all three founders of S, just by watching them talk.
Come for the funny Langa POV and stay for the lovematchablossom moments.

Day 3- A Day at the Park
Timeless Regrets
Kojiro looked up once more, the strength to do so more than he anticipated as he winced at the sudden jarring pain in his neck. He waited until it subsided before he let his eyes wander over the empty park once again.
He was sure that time he’d heard a voice in the distance.
Then, as if on cue, wind whistled softly in his ear as if to mock his longing spirit and prove him wrong once again. He sighed, mumbling something to himself before he looked back to his hands that clutched his small cup of coffee defeatedly letting the dark, bland smell of his afternoon brew bring him back to the present, pleading with his mind not to return to the past.
Wrinkled and slightly bruised, his hands tightened their grip on the styrofoam cup, just barely, mourning the strength that was sacrificed in exchange for painful and heartbreaking years as another breeze ruffled once vibrant green hair.
He told himself not to think about it, but when he was alone, which he often preferred these days, it was all that was on his mind.
The past was tumultuous and burdensome, yet he refused to let go of the weight of those debilitating years because they were still memories. He feared that even if he let the bad ones go, he would, in turn, lose the good ones that were buried deep beneath.
Another ruffle of the leaves had Kojiro looking up and following the path of a spinning leaf dancing through the air and passing by a bed of cherry blossoms.
He begged himself to look away but his eyes stayed fixed on the beautiful flowers, each one different yet the same, all of them sparking the same memories.
The first question that always came to his mind when the thoughts came rushing back to him was why they went out in the rain. Why was it so important that harsh autumn evening to leave the comfort and safety of their little home and go out into the horrid, merciless outside world?
He couldn’t ever remember where they were going, no matter how many times he replayed the fateful day, but it didn’t matter in the end. What mattered was that Kojiro lost control of the car because he was too busy yelling at Kaoru about God knows what, and watched helplessly from the sidelines as their bodies contorted all about the car until it dove into the freezing river.
Everything was dark and he could feel his heart in his throat, beating a million beats per second yet Kaoru’s hand brushing over his, trying to find his grip, felt like his only life line.
He remembered pain but it was menial as compared to the guilt that he felt when he tugged them out of the water, Kaoru’s limp form too still for Kojiro’s worries to be eased.
He remembered damp rose hair sticking to his face as he struggled to bring him back to him—trying to delay the inevitable.
The wind picked up again but he felt like he was still stuck in that moment over 50 years later.
He thought he heard his soft voice call out to him in that brief moment yet again, but, as it turned out to be every time it was nothing.
An unsavory thought passed his mind that left a bad taste in his mouth, questioning why, if Kaoru even did come back, why he would ever come back to the park just to tell Kojiro he doesn’t need to still feel sorry and that he can finally move on.
It wouldn’t be like him to do that. And he wouldn’t want to waste his time.
He cursed softly under his breath—this is why he never came back to the park. He never gained enough strength back to push back against the onslaught of emotional turmoil his memories would bring as they crowded his mind in the silence of the midday air.
It took him a moment to remind himself that that was in the past and although a piece of his heart forever remained in that bleak space in time, he had to live in the present.
He had to stay in this moment for another lost soul, one that he feared was even more lost than his own.
A while later he found his legs were moving on their own, trudging along the beaten sidewalk as his ears tuned out the world and only focused on the sound the gravel made as he slid his shoes over it.
They brought him back to his home, though it hadn’t felt anything like a home in these past years.
It was more like a shelter with four walls surrounding him, cluttered with paintings that would be deemed abstract by a wandering eye, but were fragments of memories Kojiro didn’t want to hold onto but didn’t want to let go.
He opened the door cautiously, as if doing it any other way would entice a monster to come out and attack him from the shadows. So he took slow steps around the quaint little abode the three of them once shared—He, Kaoru and Ainosuke.
He sighed, the thought of them before the world punished them for being so happy too much to bear at times.
Letting out a deep breath as he reached the living room, with its boring, tan walls, tall grandfather clock, worn brown rug and two armchairs, Kojiro’s eyes almost instantly fell on the shape of a tired body pressed one of the large chairs, grayish, blue hair sticking out just barely from above.
A small smile crossed his face as he carefully made his way to the figure’s side, setting the half finished now cold coffee on a nearby table. The occupant of the seat angled it so that they could observe the outside world, edged close enough to the window pane that knees were pressed against the wall in a desperate attempt to be close but still be at a distance. He stepped close enough to the body to find Ainosuke content and yet lost in thought as he sat poised in the black chair.
“It looked like it was a nice day…” he heard his friend’s dry voice begin. It sounded like he hadn’t used it in months until this moment, but it still carried a semblance of the man Ainosuke was eons ago.
“It was,” Kojiro replied, his voice dry yet pleasant. “I think you would’ve liked it.”
Ainosuke hummed in what was either agreement or just acknowledgment before his attention shifted to his hands.
Kojiro noticed that he’d play with them a lot when he had something on his mind, though Ainosuke never seemed to notice it was that much of a habit.
He put his once strong, working hands atop Ainosuke’s frail and paler ones. He frowned at how cold they were, but kept them rested on them nonetheless.
“Kojiro”, Ainosuke began after a moment of silence in a tone so soft it worried the other man.
“Yes?”
He watched him hesitate momentarily, sucking in a strangled breath.
“You’re not happy, are you?”
Kojiro twisted his head slowly to look at Ainosuke’s eyes. They were still trained on the scene the window displayed, watching time pass right before his eyes. He wanted to speak and say something that would quickly make all his doubts flee without a moment to spare, but his mouth wouldn’t move. Instead, Ainosuke finished his thought, his voice hoarse.
“You haven’t been for some time…and I can’t help but feel that it’s my fault…”
“Ainosuke,” his voice coming back with a vigor he thought he’d lost, “please don’t think—“
“I haven’t been able to be there for you like he was…”
He looked down then, his hands shifting ever so slightly under Kojiro’s. His eyes twitched as it seemed like his mind wandered away again from the moment he was in, “…and I know you need someone who is strong enough to be their own hero but I…”
Kojiro admired how Ainosuke’s eyes always kept that same softness to them even as the years passed them by without a hint of remorse—it pained him as he watched how they became glassy. His throat worked to try and form words in a futile attempt, instead settling on sighing the other’s name.
“Ainosuke…”
“I don’t think I can ever be Karou for you…for us…”
Kojiro froze at the mention of their lost friend. He wasn’t sure what hurt him more, that Ainosuke felt like he needed to be Kaoru to be good enough for Kojiro, or how disappointed Kaoru would be that Ainosuke had this feeling for even a second.
“Kaoru never really left us, Ainosuke. He’s always been here with us,” the grip on his hand tightened, “so don’t feel like you need to be him. I need you to be you…for us.”
The wind blew softer outside as the sun set a little slower over the horizon.

You know the drill. Time to bask in festivals past.
Founder Trio Festival, Day 3: A Day at the Park
They laid in the park, under a cherry tree of all things. Kaoru's head rested on Adam's stomach as fingers wove through his long hair, deftly braiding and unbraiding. His own fingers tangled in strands of matcha green, not so much stroking as half yanking. For how short Kojiro's hair was, it always seemed to be in a constant state of tangle. Which left Adam's head resting on Kojiro, leaving them in a triangle of sorts, staring up at the clouds passing by.
Kaoru worked his hand through a particularly vicious snarl, yanking both knot and cherry petal loose.
"Ow, ow, ow!" Kojiro's hands came up, smacking half-heartedly at Kaoru's hands. "Take it easy, will you?"
"Well, maybe if you would brush your hair more than once a month…" Kaoru muttered.
"Well, I'm sorry I don't carry around a comb in my back pocket."
Kaoru could feel the rumble of Adam's chuckle beneath him. One hand drifted from his hair into view and he took in the well-manicured nails for a passing second before Adam thumbed gently at his lip ring and then moved back to bury in his hair.
"Maybe," Adam said. "We should take more days off like this. Listening to you two bickering like an old married couple is kind of fun."
Kaoru turned his head as Kojiro let out an indignant 'hmph,' looking up at Adam. His hood was down today and his eyes were closed. There was an almost peaceful look to the angles of his face as he took in the sunlight. Kaoru drank in the sight with reverence.
It was a look only seen when it was just the three of them.
He loosened his fingers, lightly combing through Kojiro's now untangled hair. Kojiro's hand rested lightly on the curve of Adam's neck. And with the three of them locked together in mutual rest, the world narrowed down to soft touches, blue skies, and fluttering cherry blossoms.

The bell over the door rang, and Ainosuke looked up, starting to greet the new customers.
“Welcome to the ABC Cafe. How can I…”
His words trailed off as he recognized Kaoru and Kojiro, the latter of whom was smiling at him with a shit-eating grin.
“How can I help you today?” Ainosuke asked, recovering quickly from his surprise.
“Table for two,” Kaoru replied, elbowing Kojiro. Ainosuke nodded, gracefully gesturing towards an empty table as he grabbed two menus before following them over. After his friends had each taken a seat, he placed the laminated cards in front of them. Then, taking the notepad out of his apron, he flipped to a fresh page before starting to speak.

When Ainosuke’s phone vibrated, he glanced at the screen and the unregistered number before leaning back in his chair and picking up the call.
“Hey. How have you been?” he asked, his voice gentle. But an unfamiliar cackle emitted from the speaker, and he pulled the phone away from his ear, double-checking the number on the screen.
“Who is this? How did you get this phone? Ainosuke demanded after he replaced it to his ear. Of course, it was possible that there was a simple explanation for all of this: perhaps the phone had been dropped, and a Good Samaritan was calling a number in the contacts to try to return it. But in his line of business, it was always better to be safe than sorry.

Continuing our last year festival journey, we move onto the prompt Gangs with this piece by Summer
Founder Trio Festival, Day 2: Gang
"You know," Kojiro mused, staring up at the bottom of the overpass. "Sometimes I think we're a gang."
"And sometimes I think you're a moron," Kaoru rolled his eyes, rattling the spray can before turning back to the concrete wall to lay another thick streak of color.
"What makes you think that, Kojiro?" Adam handed Kaoru another can when he held a hand up.
Kaoru rolled his eyes, giving the new can a shake, "Don't humor him, Adam."
Kojiro shot him a glare. "No one asked you, four-eyes." He sighed, shaking his head, clearing his throat, and looking up at Adam with a grin. "Look at it this way. We hang out all the time. We've run from the cops—"
"Countless times," Kaoru wondered if his eyes would roll out of his head before he finished the piece in front of him.
"Hush," Kojiro smacked him across the arm right as he sprayed a line, making it go crooked. "We've been all over this place. And just…" He waved a hand in circles around Adam, at his lowered hood.
"I hardly think me showing you guys my face is grounds for a gang," Adam laughed.
Kaoru had to pause in his graffitiing to look up, to catch that brief moment of Adam smiling. It was a small collection of memories, growing larger with every day the trio spent together. But when Kojiro laughed as well, he looked over. Sure, the collection of smiles from him was far larger, but Kaoru still treasured every one of them.
"And there's three of us," Adam waved a hand. "Don't gangs usually have a few more members?"
"Ok, ok," Kojiro conceded, a hand going through the back of his hair, catching on a tangle. "Maybe not a gang. How about a squad?"
"A squad?" Kaoru snorted, nearly streaking a line across the wrong spot. "Quit making me laugh, idiot. I'm going to mess this up."
"What are you working on, anyway?" Adam pushed up off the wall, coming over to lean entirely too close. "Are those our names?"
"Hey, yeah." Kojiro leaned in as well until two faces bracketed Kaoru's. He had to resist the urge to press a hand to his chest from the way his heart thudded unevenly.
Instead, he held his hands up, pushing palm and spray can against the too-close cheeks. "Knock it off, you two. Let me work."
"Touchy!" Kojiro chortled, ruffling a hand through pink strands. Kaoru glared, threatening the offending man with a brief spritz from the spray paint. Adam leaned back against the wall, falling silent and staring off at the moon above. Full. Casting light upon Adam's angled features that admittedly drew Kaoru's attention away from his art more than once as Kojiro continued to babble on about what their little trio could be called.
"Well, regardless of what we are, be it friends or something more," Adam started.
"I hope it's always like this," Kaoru and Kojiro finished, while Kaoru added the final touch to the stylistic graffiti of their names.
