“A family” is young children being kept in the furthest room from any other household activity so they won’t disturb the adults, seeing their parents for maybe an hour every day, and then otherwise being supervised by servants, who they form more intense emotional attachments to than their parents, etc—despite the obvious problems with maintaining those relationships as they age.
That’s what a family is, right?

“Do you think [Sybbie’s] having a good childhood? That we’re doing well?” / “I think you’re doing your best for her, if that’s what you mean”
the fact that they really were able to convince him to stay because “children do better in families” but it’s so clear what that means to the Crawleys is soooo different from what it means to Tom…and now it’s too late!! He’s trapped!!

setting aside the visceral reaction I have to Thomas comparing Jimmy to Sybil
it is very sweet in the sense that his relationship with her, and who she is, is clearly important to him. So he wants to see those things in other people he feels a closeness to.
