when i was a kid, my little sister and i had Felicity and Elizabeth dolls, and a decent amount of their accessories collection, and i think my sister got one other doll after i was “too old” to play with them anymore, maybe a Kirsten or one of the girls of the year? i loved my felicity, but she was kinda a compromise. my mom wanted us to get dolls from the historical line, to justify a luxury purchase for two schoolkids as at least a little educational. i wanted to go for a character with a best friend, so my sister and i could buy from the same collection and share easily. my dad’s special interest in the revolutionary war settled the score for Felicity and Elizabeth. i got Felicity because i found her loud, tomboyish personality more relatable (egg moment), and my shy little sister got pretty blonde Elizabeth.
but i think i always had my eye on another girl, whenever the rich kids in my class would throw birthday parties at the american girl store. the first time i went, before i had a doll of my own, my sister and i had to pick out some of the cafe dolls that kids can borrow to sit next to them at brunch. i picked out a little kaya who wasn’t available for sale because she had a factory defect that gave her a cleft lip, and over the meal, i totally fell in love with her and wanted so badly to take her home. her collection and books and online minigames were always my favorite, and whenever the ultra-special occasion of a visit to the ag store came around, i was always glued to the glass in her little room, looking at all her cool accessories and outfits and that awesome horse.
further outside the realm of possibility was the contemporary just-like-you dolls. the clothes seemed so cool and fashionable to me, and all the amazing mini-things that were so detailed and fun, i wanted a little mini-me and a world to make around them.
so i think i’m gonna have to cave and get a kaya and a cyo doll someday.
