I always think of the Simone Weil quote where she says, "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." I would edit that quote to not say rarest, but most common and purest form of generosity.
What happens when we turn attention into a common thing? When we start to see each other more carefully, and more thoroughly? I think that's my larger question. Practicing medicine and writing poetry are just some ways of serving that.
