"Being down a General will only be a problem if the Brain finishes leading the march before we have all the Netherstones in three pairs of capable hands--We have time right now, but only two pairs of hands on the Netherstones-- the third balances her stone in one hand, and her blood-starved knife in the other. Orin is the bigger threat, for now. Once Moraena is in her rightful place, we can have you assume position as General of the army-- a part I am sure you will excel at," he assured, spreading his arms with his palms facing up; a show that he, at least partially, welcomed the hobgoblin more now that she had a place and accepted his ruling.
Of course, she was not fully trusted yet, but Gortash could trust her enough. It was what mattered.
"Ah." he put up a finger to stop her, "Assist Moraena. Do not take the fight to Orin yourself--For all their love of murder and bloodshed, Bhaalspawn seem quite sensitive about their kills being stolen-- Moraena may not have all of her memory, but she is still of Bhaal's blood, and stepping on her foot may earn you a knife in your back. Just as a word of caution, of course; your value would be wasted should she decide you are too in the way. Understood?"
She chuckles softly. A hand is raised and her head bowed at the light reprimand about brand recognition. "As I said, a trespass. It seems much has already been done. An army marches under a banner, and it is "led" by a horror sufficiently frightful to spur war measures that would make my own command team blush. The plan, what I know of it, is sound." Seems he's putting on a good enough show of being pleased with the development that the hobgoblin is fooled. She ceases her posturing and casually brushes off her shoulder, looking at Gortash with a mix of smugness and openness.
"I offer my full compliment of skills to the cause - given that your invading army is recently down a general, I thought I may step in where he stepped down. I will defer to your judgment, though, to better ascertain what needs to be done." If he's playing at being happy to see her, she might be playing at being willing to put herself beneath him. For all her talk of grasping and taking she's rather politely placing herself under his thumb, content to play second fiddle to another Banite. Genuine belief in the strength of the plan, or insincerity that will be discarded at the first opportunity?
"The branches of the legislature need to be pruned, do they. Grand. Moraena, First Chosen... inconvenienced, but the proper hand for the blade. You wish me to press down upon her sister and ensure there is no threat that can be made to the throne? It will be done."
A wide, unabashedly mean-spirited smile. "Point me towards problems to be solved for the Grand Design, and you will find me a very amiable person to work with, Lord Gortash. More amiable still if I am granted your army to lead, even if it must end in a pratfall to show your command of war before the fist closes on Baldur's Gate."

When Gortash laid out his plans once more and offered a (granted, small) piece of truth, he expected to be lashed at. He expected Karlach to speak her bias into his former ally's ear, the companions to splinter apart at his extended hand-- he may have even been hoping for the outcome; the Prism-bearers being at odds with what he offered them, letting those who did not trust him part with those with sense to see he was invaluable to their survival-- and more importantly, a key factor in their quest for power.
It was why he remained awake, expecting the woman to return looking for answers, sorting all the evidence he could pull-- for most, he would offer only what served him, what he could believe in and smile about as he spun his own version of the truth. This time, everything was laid bare; after all, he had nothing to hide from his long-time partner. No disagreements or odds that would demonize him in any way.
At least, nothing he couldn't talk his way out of.
So when he spread his arms wide in welcome, stating his efforts, his hands retracted as his loyalty was brought into question, touching his chest as if hurt by her words. "True, my words may be biased, but our correspondence does not lie--" Gortash offered, pushing the tidy stack towards her, slowly across the table. "I have very little to hide from you-- provided, of course, your discretion regarding anything sensitive."
"As for your kin, well…She spoke as if you were as good as dead--knowing Bhaal's children as long as I have through you, there was no reason to believe she left any chance for you to be alive," he assured, "I struggled with the idea of even looking for proof, or a body… For all I knew, you were strung up in your secret temple for her entertainment. And we had no luck on even identifying where the Temple was. You could have been anywhere, dead or alive. And I wasn't even allowed a chance to dwell, thanks to Orin's timing. I wouldn't have proceeded with her had I any reason to believe you lived."
"This new revelation changes everything-- we can still succeed, even without Ketheric. The fact that you are here once more proves it; you still have those memories of your past--our past-- somewhere in your mind. We can succeed between the two of us, as we always planned. Orin has long outlived her use to the plan that was originally ours."

Her companions had advised her against talking to Bane's Chosen alone, she had worried Karlach would burn down her tent in pure anger after hearing that she was going to meet with him again, after hearing of her wanting to talk to the man all by herself. ' He'll try to sweet talk you to hell just to get you on his fucking side! ' she had said. In return, Wren had simply asked her if she took her for a fool — of course she knew to watch herself around a man who had build his empire on LIES. Even her amnesia riddled brain knew better than to blindly trust him. What she had not told her fiery friend, however, was the way her brain tried to tell her something in relation to him. There was something about him, something important that her memories could not quite stitch together anymore and so she had been left with no choice but to confront him directly. Alone this time, not surrounded by the watchful eyes of the patriars or her all too curious companions. She had allowed him to set the stage last time, a MISTAKE on her part. She would challenge him this time, if he wanted to put on a show she would be the only audience and she was harder to sway by his games than the nobles of the city.
Still — she spoke greatly of her resistance to other people's charms, boasted about being too smart to fall for other people's schemes, yet when he spoke to her she could not fully surpress the desire to take his words at surface value, to believe the words that, for all she knew right now, might not account to more than petty lies to lure her into his grasps. " It is easy for you to say that now when you know I cannot verify that your words are true, " she spoke, slowly, forcing herself to meet his eyes. Who will blink first — " You say this was OUR plan yet you continued it with my sister as if nothing had changed, " she pointed out, hating the angry accusation that infused every word. She had no right to be jealous, bitter, had no memories to support any of the emotions that had embedded themselves into her heart on their own volition and yet she felt them nonetheless.
" You'll have to give me more than pretty WORDS after what Orin did. " Give me a reason to trust you, a part of her begged silently. Tell me who we used to be.

" if you smile like that at me again, i will cut your throat, tyrant." as grave as the drow's tone may seem, with the dagger pointed his direction, the teensiest tug of her lips gives her true feelings away.
Tumblr media
Gortash was all too aware that while she was brandishing a dagger in his direction, there was also just the most subtle of tells-- perhaps it was why he felt especially brave enough to allow the smile to deepen into a cheeky smirk before bringing his hand to his lips and then down towards her and making a loud smooching sound. To further embarrass and disgust her, obviously.
